ऋषि कणाद ने हजारों साल पहले वैशेषिक दर्शन में गुरुत्वाकर्षण का कारण बताया,संयोगाभावे गुरुत्वातपतनम--५-१-७,, यानी कोई भी वस्तु जब तक कही न कहीं उसका जुड़ाव है वो नीचे नहीं गिरेगी,, जैसे आम या सेब का टहनी से संयोग,जब तक संयोग है तब तक पृथ्वी में कितना भी आकर्षण है वो वस्तु को अपनी तरफ खींच नहीं सकती,, जैसे ही संयोग का अभाव हुआ गुरुत्व के कारण वस्तु खुद पृथ्वी पर गिर जाएगी,,
