"Two hundred years of tradition unimpeded by progress" is the old joke about the fire service. I tried to get the Euro style helmet adopted in my department, I was out voted and very heavy traditional style helmets were purchased. Neck injuries became commonplace, the department then started replacing the helmets with lighter, smaller brimmed units. Safety, useability and comfort trumps appearance and tradition every time.

The thing is fourty years ago these helmets didn’t even exist even in Europe they were either the French world war one style helmet, the German style or the Cromwell style. In the late 80’s Cromwell introduced the Cromwell Fire pro 90 an open sided helmet as a replacement for their venerable county helmet. The fire pro lasted in London until 1990 and were issued up until 2014 in Dublin Fire Brigade

One of the first "jet style" fire helmets was created in the US by the motorbike helmet company Bell, I believe in the 60s. It was basically a crash helmet with an external visor, plus a bit attached to the rear that stuck out over the back of the neck. It wasn't very well received.

So I am a firefighter in Germany, I've used 3 helmets in actual incidents so far, all European Style (Schuberth F120, F220 and the newest Gen MSA XF1) but I wore a traditional US Helmet once. To clear some things up first: I dont claim to be able to judge any operational advantages or disadvatages, but what I can say is that the euro style helmets are usually lighter and personally i feel they are more comfortable. Arguments US firefighters have often made against especially the XF1 are that it doesnt protect your neck against ember etc. and I have to say that I can see where the argument is coming from based on a pure first look, but if you do actually try them on and use their neck protection properly I'd say the neck protection is pretty good and - again based on pure looking at it I'd say it does it better than a classic US style helmet. I think we all can agree that as long as its actually a safer helmet and a good innovation, looks is not of importance, as well as the country it origins from or was made in. And i really do hope that more US firefighters at least have an open minded discussion about it when confronted with the possibility of getting euro style helmets in the US. I do get the value of tradition and I do get that you are not used to the looks and overall design, but in discussions about helmets I often just run against a wall of "arguments" like "You look like Astronauts" or for our older helmets "You look like Nazi Soldiers". I really get that you are biased to what you are used to, I am biased too. Its just that so often firefighters from the US just behave like everything they do and every equipment the use is undeniably the best in every situation and wont even have an open minded discussion about wether that is true - which it obviously isn't. I think we could and should learn more from each other than just saying "I dont like what you have and you do so I wont talk about it". I know that probably is not the mentality of the majority of US firefighters but it seems to be a mentality of a lot of US firefighters, especially older ones. Just keep an open mind.

I do not really consider this an unbiased review. It's more or less influenced by your bias as US firefighter and you reflect this very well. Funfact, I'm also feeling weird putting on a US helmet, and children also do no recognise me with some kind of cowboy style thing on my head. Also the country of origin is not really an important fact in terms of firefighter safety and displays again some kind of bias. Nevertheless I'd be really interested in the pros and cons of the two helmet types. So maybe if you find time this would be a nice follow up.

In the1990s, a large number of UK fire brigades had the Cairns Metro 660, and a small number had the Bullard FXE, and a few had the Pacific F3. The others had the Cromwell F500, a British half shell helmet. It was throughout the Noughties that the UK went over to jet style helmets. So I actually use this helmet, not like a few commenters from the peanut gallery. It sits very nicely and is comfortable, as it wraps around your head, instead of sitting on-top in comparison to my old MSA Invader and Bullard LTX (my least favorite helmet). The integrated eye protection is neat and we are issued the integrated helmet lights, they could be a bit brighter in my opinion or have an adjustable brightness. I would opt for the extended neck and throat curtain if possible, specifically for the gap between the back of the neck.

with the xf1 I just see a lot of hot embers going down my back. with my 1044 that won't happen. I prefer the traditional helmets from cairns they been working for over 170 years why would they change them now. the European style helmet may sell in the United States but there are paid guys that will never wear them just because they look ugly. in my trusted opinion if I could afford a leather I would. in my opinion they are safer, better quality built, and they look great. the xf1 is just not looking good for me it looks like no protection goes over your neck so hot water and embers will go down you back. but I will never know its either my 1044 or a leather helmet.

jordan martin Change can be difficult for folks especially in a field that is steeped in tradition. There have been many advancements in the firefighting in the past 170 years, I don’t want to be relegated to outdated and archaic methods. I don’t think new ideas or items should be written off because “it looks stupid”. Don’t get me wrong, I think traditional helmets are sexy AF, but out of curiosity I took the leap. Looks wise, I think it looks kind of cool, it’s sleek, but there isn’t much customization out there that I think would fit with it. My last interior I did have hot water run down my back, I had my head leaning downwards and my neck curtain must have bunched up some how, that’s why I stress the use of the large throat curtain (not sure if they’re approved yet, I can only find them for sale in Australia.) I have had folks say they though I was wearing a bike helmet. I’m from QC, so most of Canada is traditional, but there are some bigger depts in QC that roll with European style (Quebec City, and some smaller ones). Some on my dept seem to like it, there are some who don’t want to make the switch, which is fine. All in all would I wear it forever? Idk but im stuck with it for the next 10 years or if it breaks, but I’m happy with it. I certainly don’t think either styles are perfect and they both have their strengths. I’d say just try it out for shits and giggles for a month if you have the option.

I was able to get my hands on an FX1 with light kit and test it out. Like everything in life there are pluses and minuses. The fit is good and it is comfortable enough. At fist it felt like the helmet strap was chocking me out but after some adjustment it was fine. It doesn't bang against my scba bottle when looking up. on the negative side I sometimes swing my scba mask back over my shoulder to keep it out of the way and it would rub on the side of the helmet and keep me from turning my head at times. The field of view is not as good as I thought it would be. It is harder to hear surround noises as your ears are covered. Mask up times were slightly longer and you have to completely undo the helmet strap to mask up. I work in a hot humid area so the helmet became very hot quickly. For me it didn't work and I prefer a traditional American helmet. That being said in Europe they have SCBA masks that clip into the helmet and integrated comms which I didn't get to test out. Those features might improve the usability of the FX1.

If he did a proper review of the MSA Gallet fire helmet he purchased he would have realised that Mine Safety Appliances, or MSA Safety Incorporated, is an American manufacturer and supplier of safety equipment In May 2002, MSA bought CGF Gallet of France, the leading European manufacturer of protective helmets for the fire service and specialized head protection for law enforcement, aviation, and military personnel. The original F1 was an answer to a requirement of the Paris Fire Brigade for a replacement of the previous helmet (Casque modele 1933 was similar to the Merryweather) which dated back to 1933; these provided insufficient protection for the face and back of the head, and were not thermally insulated. The F1 helmet is hand made, using synthetic materials often covered with galvanised nickel. It can include masks, communication systems and other accessories. The F1 has been used by the Paris Fire Brigade since August 1985, and has been widely adopted by all of the French fire services, gaining export success in over 85 countries, including fire departments in Quebec (Ville de Quebec), Canada, Singapore, China and Japan (notably in Tokyo).

The American fire service runs significantly more calls than anywhere else in the world (probably because of population density and a larger area than all other developed countries). So if it works in America it will work anywhere. Where the opposite can't be said. European fire trucks would never work in the states because of lack of high gpm and lower amount of tool storage

The original Mk1 and Mk2 Gallet helmets were rather narrow, so as to be compact, and although a sound design, they apparently somewhat impaired firefighters' hearing and blinkered their vision. I disagree. this is not the future of fighting fire. the man is right the fire service hates change. I would spend 900 dollars on a good leather helmet from cairns then 300 for that xf1. for one reason I know it works. I know the leather helmet will protect me better then that xf1. the leather helmet worked for over 100 years and with modifications within those years they are as safe as ever. the xf1 just looks cheap. if a ceiling falls on me I can trust the leather helmet will do its job. just by looking at the xf1 it looks cheap and in my opinion it belongs in the dumpster. #traditionalhelmetsforlife

@@ULTIMA1775 no it won't I can guarantee you that. there are some die hard leather guys here in the United States. I have a cairns 1044 only because I couldn't afford a leather. leather will last for ever. I just learned for NFPA you need to replace a composite helmet every 10 years. with a leather helmet there are guys that have had the same leather helmet for 25 years. they last longer than the composite, they are cooler than the composite European helmets, and they are a part of our history in the United States fire service. you will catch me dead before I wear a helmet like that. the New York City fire department even uses leather helmets and they are the biggest fire department in the United States. The FDNY uses the cairns N5A New Yorker a leather helmet. leather is here to stay.

I know that big companies often take no notice of people's ideas, but for European helmets to sell better in America, they need to be more Americanised. An outer shell with an 8 comb pattern on the top, with trapezoid markings, and delicate embossed patterns on the lower rear. The option of a rubber band around, like on traditional helmets, to carry equipment such as wedges. A front plate that can be customized, and might be made of leather, although it would be a fraction of the size of a traditional front plate. (I have seen this on another make of European helmets in the US). And also, maybe, for the edges of the eye shield (not the full face visor) to be visible when retracted, to give a passing resemblance to Bourkes.

Unlike yourself we have to buy our stuff through fundraisers not the taxpayers. NFPA is killing the small town fire departments and you paid guys don't feel it because you have fire tax and tax payer money. Learn your facts dude and instead of getting paid and be an arsehole go volunteer and career they need the training, and experience and paid guys have a lot of that and so do some volunterr guys my old man has the same exact training as most paid guys and was even offered to be an instructor for the Pennsylvania State fire academy. @@americanoutdoorsman_1133 For you maybe its a hype, for a lot of Fire Departments all over Europe its a step in the right, a safer direction. There is a reason why no US style helmet apart from one (made by MSA a european company) were never certified in the EU because of failing safety tests. New Euro Style helmets are safer than old us style helmets especially safer then leather, and thats a fact (because if they were as safe as European helmets they wouldnt fail EU safety tests). If youre whole decision is made simply by looks and Tradition, then go with it but accept that you will have the less safe helmet and dont harras people for wearing and choosing other helmets. Sane people dont care for looks if its safer :)

@@reallynotgood1063 I’m an American firefighter and have been for over 25 years. Our department has the traditional style and some of our personal has the leather helmets it’s optional as long as it’s approved by the NFPA and OSHA I also have a leather helmet. In our department we have 0 head injuries with American traditional helmets and we don’t go with it for looks either. My department purchase 10 of those helmets and gave them to firefighters to try them and they all said they didn’t like them and said they couldn’t fit their heads through confined spaces when doing drills. Many departments that are neighboring to ours say they won’t go to them as well.

@@americanoutdoorsman_1133 see thats a completely different approach, than just saying "spaceball helmets" and thats it. Those are arguments, although i cant agree with them in my experience. And in the same way there are arguments the other way around, for me EU style helmets are way more comfortable and feel lighter, plus they offer more options for feature integration: Built in lighting systems, clip on masks, communication systems, even built into the helmet thermal cameras. Still the fact that EU helmets get certified by NFPA and OSHA too but US helmets dont meet the EN Safety Norms, still does mean EU helmets are safer, wether you like it or not. But thanks for having an open coversation.

Astronaut helmets, keep the US traditionals you can actually fit your helmet through smaller spaces than these dorky space helmets. I would consider US traditionals for easier ways to make it fit into small holes, etc. I’ve seen a video of US firefighters and one smaller guy has a European style helmet and the guy is super small, and another firefighter has a US helmet on and he is twice the size as the smaller guy and fits through a tight space with the US traditional fire helmet.
