MSC Rosella leaving Zandvlietlock with about 9 to 10 beaufort. My apologies for the bad sound but my microphone does not like that much wind, and it was also on the wrong setting :(

For something like this a sock or two over the microphone helps with the wind noise.

Wind is straight at the bow, Zandvliet and Berendrecht Locks are positioned in almost Eastern/Western direction. Not accidentally I assume.

No stern tug? That must be a pilot with balls of steel! Either that or there must have been immense pressure from above to clear the lock.
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 8 жыл бұрын
+Leblond987 The stern has the power of the rudder and propeller to steer up against the wind :) This pilot knew what he was doing ;)

Congratulations all, a nice feat indeed. Obviously this was possible because the wind was not blowing sideways or lateral to the ship but head onto the bows which created drag but not side shifting tendency. I see that at first the tug had a shorter hawser so that it could flit from one side to the other to have effective " steering" on the ship as quickly as possible, The high Inertia of the ship assisted a lot in this case and the fact that the anchoring point on the tug was somewhere near its centre of gravity, away from its rudder, made it all possible for the tug boat to steer its rear portion in the nimble manner it did . When I dealt with such situation on smaller yachts, I preferred to tow with my outboard powered small craft through tying the two bows to each other and then my towing boat with transom on which I had the outboard was leading the show, and I could steer so easily in reverse, with the outboard taking the leading transom hence the rest, to exactly where I wanted it to go. With a tow rope, attached to the transom one cannot tow effectively all under control, unless of course one had a couple of these Voith propellers distributed under the towing craft. enabling it to go sideways and turn on itself. Wonderful engineering these modern tug boats which can move and turn in all directions. Last year with my students we coupled two joysticks one in the front and the other at the back in line with the centre line of the ship and placed a small model ship linking both of them, When the model was moved as desired, ahead, astern, turn port and starboard, these were operating the two joysticks hence the four thrusters on the big ship accordingly in synchronism with the model ship which had another feature, extending in length through an unlocking device, one could operate any of the thrusters individually or together as needed. So one complex ferry could be operated with ONE hand on the model ship moving it as desired with the larger counterpart following suit.

I bet your students can't understand a single word you are saying. What is this vinaigrette of words? "Last year with my students we coupled two joysticks one in the front and the other at the back in line with the centre line of the ship and placed a small model ship linking both of them" So you glued a model ship between joysticks? What the fuck?
