Great explanation! If you’re not a pilot, Kip, you should be. You explain this stuff better than I ever could, and I’m a retired airline pilot. 😁

I'm just a weekend bugsmasher and an inactive one at that, but I agree. Some of these simulator tutorials blow the paid instruction I got out of the water. I used Flight Simulator X to practice IFR and navigation as a student pilot, and by the time I took my first cross-country solo I had already practiced it three times on the computer. Videos and communities like this are where the internet adds real value.

@@KaiTakApproach I'm studying now, and between sportys online school, then referencing some of these MSFS tutorials, it makes the real world stuff that much easier to understand. I just watched a simple video on VORs because I thought I had it, but couldn't figure it out. Perfectly clear now.

It's like a speed course into these matters, with a logical, sequential approach, without being overwhelmed with info or non-relation remarks. Amazing value! (My background. I'm playing MSFS2020 in VR. Used to just fly around, but have now (Jan 2023) embarked on an epic VR journey CapeTown-NorthPole in a Beechcraft G58 Baron ... I felt the need to learn the instruments, starting with the AP because it's a long journey and I need the/some automation for endurance. So from learning some basic AP, I gradually want to learn more. Hence e.g. the ILS. I found your video. And well ... impressive. I feel I need no more than your explantions. Thanks👍❤)

Just a tiny suggestion for sim pilots, planning to transition full scale aviation. Wait till the White Arc on the Airspeed indicator before lowering flaps. In real life, deploying flaps outside of the white arc could stress the airframe unnecessarily.
@KipOnTheGround2 жыл бұрын
It's a good rule of thumb to only extend flaps within the white arc, and in this video I did make the mistake of using 20 degrees of flaps at around ~100 knots, above the white arc (amongst other mistakes!). Flap speed limitations vary by plane, though, and in the Skyhawk, you can actually use 10 degrees of flaps at 110 KIAS, which is above the white arc. You can see this in the POH or directly on the flap control itself within the plane. I could have safely used 10 degrees of flaps at 100 knots, but based on me stating "another notch..." in the video, I was clearly at least going to flaps 20 prematurely. Whoops :-)

Hey Bill. If you're using the 530/430, I recommend installing the new Working Title 530/430 from the MSFS Marketplace, and then checking out these recent videos I made about it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itCilZlimpmRmZc.html If you're using the G1000, here's a video on entering flight plans: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btaCoLKG3Ni1ep8.html (there are also a lot of videos I made on the G1000 NXi in this playlist: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZOen7GCvsrcaZc.html) The 530/430 in this specific video you watched is pretty old, though I've kept it up because people still find it useful. As of last week, the version in the Marketplace was released and is much improved, though some planes need to be fixed by their developers to be fully compatible with it. Finally, if you still need some help, feel free to join the Discord server here and we can chat directly: discord.com/invite/8hcJpsvsd9

Hi Kip. Love your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community. Here is to hoping you will keep releasing more in the future :-) I tried flying this route in a 152 navigating with just radios. I don’t understand how ppl are able (were able?) to do it. I wouldn’t say I could actually fly it, only semi worked with pause for tuning radios and VFR map for seeing how far off I was at any given time. I think I understand how to “catch” these points in space by tuning two intersecting frequencies on two separate readios, and observing one or both (at JOGIT) of the needles “crossing over” when I pass the intersection. I also think I accurately located JOGIT, LUCIG, and GUNEY using the sectional chart and approach plate: JOGIT - intersection of SLI radial 076 “to” (freq 115.7) and POM radial 164 ”from” (freq 110.4) MIDDS - intersection of SLI radial 120 “from” (freq 115.7) and SXC radial 039 “from” (freq 111.4) LUCIG - intersection of I-LGB localizer runway 30 (freq 110.3) and ELB radial 261 “from” (freq 117.2) GUNEY - intersection of I-LGB localizer runway 30 (freq 110.3) and SLI radial 196 “from” (freq 115.7) I could NOT find the MIDDS intersection (if that is the right term) on the sectional chart at SkyVector. Instead I found it by searching the Internet (on an old Jeppsen SimChart). Any case - fun stuff… I think I need to start learning to “fly” with GPS! It’s too much with the radios and I will never get there :-o
@KipOnTheGround3 жыл бұрын
Oh, wow, you did that route with crossing radials and tuning into 2 VORs? Awesome. I know of that method but haven't done it myself yet. I definitely use GPS primarily, but my partner was actually practicing navigating that way a couple months back (she flies for real 🙂)
