I am pleased to say that I have been coordinating with Matt, who is the developer of this amazing tool to bring you this exclusive video tutorial. So do make sure to hit that notification bell and be the first to see future updates! As you may know, the NIS Scaler tool really helped a lot of us with improving the performance and clarity of VR and this update is really exciting.
The new build, called the OpenXR Toolkit, has a few more tools and features the NIS Scaler tool as well as another option called the FSR too, which I will show you in this video. It has been rebranded and there is a detailed website which goes through release notes, build information and detailed instructions on how to use it.
If you want to watch some useful and interesting tests and comparisons when using the NIS Scaler tool with the Reverb G2, I recommend Mark at Simhanger's here: • MSFS VR | Increase you...

Wow... i just had the smoothest flight I’ve ever had in msfs2020! And I haven’t even tuned the settings yet! I love the effect the sharpness had on the trees, made them look much better! Odyssey plus, 1080ti, 7700k, 16g ram, ssd drive. 80% nis scale and 30% sharpness. In the cessna 152, flying low i never had a single dip below 30 fps, with reprojection on and prop textures deleted it was perfectly smooth! Interestingly when i flew higher and the fps started fluctuating i got more stutters, it seemed to try and lock it at 30 and 45... but sometimes would fluctuate between them and cause stutters, im gonna try locking at 30 fps in nvidea control panel... In the pmdg dc6 i got a smooth 30fps at 200-300 feet, best result so far! Below that and landing it would go below 30 and cause stuttering but still the smoothest landings in this plane ever! Absolute lowest fps dip was 23, maybe i can adjust some settings and finally get stutter free landings in the dc6... Amazing tool!!! Thank you matt!!!

Question (just to be sure I understand this): This OpenXR Toolkit only affects MSFS, and will not affect ANY other game, correct? I currently use the openvr_fsr mod for better performance in DCS World and IL-2, but don't want to mess that up if this could interfere. The openvr_fsr mod is installed in each separate game exe folder only, so I don't expect a conflict with MSFS.

Great stuff, this makes it so much easier experimenting with different settings while remaining in VR. I didn't see any fps differences between NIS and FSR so I kept using NIS. But the fps counter showed me it was worth going from 80% to 74%, that increased my fps with about 5fps. On my 2080S I need that :) BTW I think the CTRL-F1 to instantly switch NIS on and off doesn't work anymore?

Unfortunate because I was really looking forward to having this level of control. UPDATE: switching from DX12 to DX11 fixed it.

You use either NIS or FSR (in my case I didn't see any difference in fps between both). Chose one, exit and reenter VR (so no need to go back to the main menu), check the fps.. switch to the other one, check again.. play with the scale slider so find that sweet spot between best graphics and for you acceptable fps. But after every change, also with the scale slider, you need to exit and reenter VR mode for it to become active.

I seem to always need to fly with ASW/MotionReprojection and find that's it is smoothest with a very consistent framerate (FPS) - I am mostly flying helicopters at very low level and yawing a bit frequently which stutters unless I have frame interpolation. Is there any chance that this toolkit could help with capping the rate or just helping find a locked downsample of the HMD rate (e.g. 90-45-30-22, or 80-40-20, 72-36-24). Thanks again!

Thanks for the feedback. You don't need to use the keyboard and the menu once you've come up with the best settings for you. Those settings are saved. If you plan on changing settings "on the fly", then with the old tool didn't you have to take off your headset anyway?

@@mbucchia Yes I understand that. I don't want to change on the fly. I setup with the earlier one and haven't touched it since. I just didn't see the reason for having the new one run in the headset? @@jJustPlayingNZ There are more features already in the toolkit and being able to modify those while in VR with the headset on is a must. For example setting the world scale would not be a good experience if done from the desktop tool, and would be very cumbersome. Being able to integrate to the game's VR Settings menu would be great, but remember that we are not the developers of the game - we simply cannot do this type of stuff. Same for intercepting the mouse movements. If as you said, you are only changing the settings occasionally and while not flying, the in-VR menu shouldn't be this much of an impediment, especially compared to having to take the headset off like before! By switching back to the older version, you are missing out on some great features like FSR which will bring you even better quality! Hoping you can find a compromise!

@@mbucchia Thanks for taking the time to explain all that. I then set it to 90 FPS to match the Reverb G2, and now it hangs around 54 to 64 depending on where I'm flying. It feels smooth for the most part, but this is MSFS we're talking about here. Interesting but most folks by now know there's an even bigger update on the horizon. SIM Update 10 could include DX12 and if it does, then it will come with DLSS. Asobo has confirmed this is working and giving great results far better than they imagined especially at higher resolutions. Those who have bought AMD cards, I told you so, it's finally happened! However just so PIE gets his views 😉, the DX12 update is literally 6 months away at least, and it will probably be really buggy! 😀
@Zeeflyboy
@Zeeflyboy 2 жыл бұрын
The DX12 implementation was added at the end of last year… it’s an early implementation and work continues on it, but it’s already an option you can choose in MSFS. Re DLSS it’s great that they have finally seen the potential, but from other games like ACC it’s not a magic bullet in VR and can actually benefit from FSR or NIS on top through the Vr API as well… I’m personally running the openVR performance toolkit with FSR combined with DLSS selected in game which is giving me the best results, so don’t write it off even after DLSS releases.
@kevinbrook7033

@@Zeeflyboy he's referring to the developer Q & A a couple days ago where Jorg and Sebastian confirmed they have DLSS working and its surpassed their expectations. They are planning to release it as part of Sim update 10. What they didn't answer though was if DLSS will work in VR. My guess will be not at first, but hopefully we'll have fully working DirectX12 with DLSS in VR by this time next year.

@Zeeflyboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinbrook7033 yeah I know, I watched it yesterday - however he was saying DX12 is coming in sim update 10 and I was pointing out DX12 is already here in MSFS… I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t release DLSS for VR at the same time - DLSS has natively supported VR since 2.1 released and they would have to go out of their way to not support it. My further point was that ACC is a similar game (cockpit based, existing temporal upsampling and anti-aliasing, and a modern engine using deferred rendering) which very recently added DLSS - while it is better to have than not have, it is not as effective in VR as on flat screen and still benefits from adding FSR/NIS on top, not to mention the potential performance gains for fixed foveated rendering. So Asbobo saying they will be adding DLSS does not render this toolkit redundant as inferred above. This toolkit also plans to add significantly more features such as world scale adjustment, hand tracking support etc. I’m definitely looking forward to having DLSS support, but it will go hand in hand with this toolkit and not replace it.

@Zeeflyboy
@Zeeflyboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinbrook7033 FSR is actually a bit better for that than NIS imo... though it likely varies from engine to engine. Also sometimes the shimmering can be from over sharpening - unfortunately MSFS doesn't expose sharpening strength in the UI and the only way to adjust it is to modify the user config file. If you do that however, set the game sharpening to zero and then adjust NIS/FSR sharpening strength to taste then it can go a long way towards reducing shimmer effect.
