Applies to MSI GT72-2PC, likely also applies to GT72-2QE and other sub-models, possibly applies to GT72S and GT72VR but I will not say it absolutely applies to those. Replacing the battery in this laptop is a very hands-on technical endeavour, so if you're not comfortable taking apart essentially your entire laptop, you might be better off going to the pros to have the battery replaced. No modifications were made to the case or any component in the process of replacement.
There are some points in the video where I'm not 100% certain about specific aspects of the tear-down, such as the CPU/GPU heat sink removals - YES, it is required to remove both heat sinks, and the two are separate from each other, even though one of the GPU heat pipes attaches to the CPU block. Also, while not fully necessary, it is recommended to redo the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU dies each time the heat sinks are removed. Also check the integrity of the thermal pads on the GPU regulators and VRAM, as well as the CPU regulators. Mine there were okay, but the one where the GPU heat pipe sits on the CPU block was pretty shredded and will need to be replaced eventually. I'll get around to it...Someday.

I used your video and another guide online to swap this battery out. I know you were replacing the thermal paste on your processors, but I found it wasn’t necessary to remove the heat sinks for this disassembly. I did find that the reason they were catching is due to the placement of the left and right speakers, which come out during normal unscrewing of the middle frame. It’s a slight pain to reassemble, but with the very limited amount of battery replacement guides for this model, I figured I’d mention it. Thanks again for an amazingly awesome guide to show me what I was getting myself into!

Thank you so much for this video! I found it hard to believe that it was this difficult until I found your video and realized that yes, it is in fact this hard! anyway, I managed to do it without taking off the heat sinks. The trick is to separate the left and right speakers from the underside of the shroud - it's the speakers that are holding the shroud down. they are held to the bottom of the shroud just with grommets and posts - so as you pull the shroud off, just pull the speakers off the posts and then they slide out from under the heat pipes.

I successfully replaced my battery, cleaned up fans, replaced both thermal paste for GPU and CPU after watching this. Mine is produced in 2017 but all GT72 models are basically the same. Thank you for putting this video up. Greetings from Istanbul. Cheers.

Thanks for this video, it has been very helpful to change my msi’s battery which was failing (sudden loss of power when running in battery, without warning, never lasting more than 15 mins (albeit the task bar said there was plenty of charge left)). Addition: I have found there isn’t a need to remove the heatsinks. Just remove all screws of plastic frame, lift its top left corner a bit, and move the (right) speaker to avoid the end of the processor’s heatsink.

Thanks SO much for doing this video. I just had to replace the battery on my G72 2QE and this was immensely helpful. I was ready to dive in to it and run the gauntlet of figuring out how it all comes apart to get at the battery but, then I found this video. You're a life saver (..and helped let me keep my hair instead of pulling it out over this)! Cheers. Subbed, with thanks.🙏

Thanks for the video. The battery on my 2QD was already dead for years and I had about 2 minutes to plug the laptop back in before it would turn off. I did not mind that, but lately it got stuck at 4% which triggers Windows to go into sleep mode at random moments. After watching this video, I have decided to not remove the battery, but to just disconnect it from the motherboard. I always use this laptop plugged anyway, so it's not worth the hassle.
@AK49BWL
@AK49BWL Жыл бұрын
Just be aware if you do that, there will be no backup if the laptop loses power at all... Mine still switches between AC and battery randomly, especially under load. The only difference is now it won't completely shut off.
@ShakerNL
@ShakerNL Жыл бұрын
@@AK49BWL Thanks for the reply :) I am aware of that and I have always liked the fact that I could still use the laptop after (accidentally) plugging the power cable. But that was for a maximum of two minutes since years... So, I think I am really at this battery's limit now. And well, it's better to have the battery disconnected at all, rather than having random shutdowns, because of low percentage.

I bought my GT72 2QE in 2015. Lately, it has started to shut down when playing video games. Otherwise, there's zero problem surfing on the web. I did clean my fans, but that was not enough. It seems like it's indeed a temperature related problem, so I think it's time to put some new thermal paste and maybe change the thermal pads. At least, my battery seems to be holding. I really like this laptop : it's reliable, nothing too fancy but it gets the job done. Anyway, thanks for this video! I feel like I might need it sooner that later.

Thanks for the video and for the link to the battery you used. Have similar laptop but newer. Let me get your opinion....since the battery is the weakest link, and, since it is such a pain to replace, would it make sense (when it is disassembled) to carve the back of that plastic casing where the battery sits to make it easier to replace the battery the next time? I see the battery would then sit on some cable ribbon and lay against the outer case, but that would probably not be a big deal. We still use to laptop randomly for things and as a backup. Thanks again!
@AK49BWL
@AK49BWL Жыл бұрын
I don't see why not. There's nothing that would end up getting screwed up by doing this as I recall. I think I would try to find a good way to secure it in place, but there's really not much space for it to move around excessively anyway.

Thank you for posting that. Doing all the work with just a chair as your working surface made my kind of cringe. You're a far better man than me! Is there a RAM slot under there too? Seems to me when I did an upgrade years ago I could only get at 1 slot from taking the outside shell off, and I needed to do something like this to get at the other, which I never did. Or heck, looking at it closer, maybe they are all perfectly visible there? :/
@AK49BWL
@AK49BWL 2 жыл бұрын
There are two slots there under the cover and then another two on the other side of the motherboard, which I'm actually not entirely sure how to get to. Probably have to remove the entire motherboard. And yeah I could have chosen a better work surface, but at least I didn't do it on the floor or my bed like in past videos 😂

@AK49BWL
@AK49BWL Жыл бұрын
It can, but if you have any power issues, it will just shut off. That includes problems with the power supply not being able to provide immediate voltage spikes, I think the battery helps serve double duty in those conditions. But I'm not entirely certain of that.

@@ecomente2263 I've had this laptop for almost six years and what I have discovered are three typical faults with it that other user have reported as well. 1.Battery dying. I opted not replacing it as the laptop is rarely moved and there is no need for me. 2.I had the laptop charge port break. It physically broke one pin of the motherboard. Had to take it to a repair shop to repair it. Might want to look into this first as the AC adapter is very sturdy and rarely breaks. The charge port however is under strain all the time as the wire hangs of it in my case and that caused it to break. 3.Keyboard C and M keys stop randomly working. This is the current issue I have and hence was watching the video on how to disassemble the laptop in order to replace it. This fault seems to be very wide spread as after some time the ribbon cable for the keyboard gets faulty and the keyboard needs to be replaced.
