This song taught me self-respect, self-love, worth and value at 5 years old and it hasn’t left. I’m 25 now and when I have a daughter I plan to introduce her to Lauryn’s music in the womb. I love this woman. I want to thank her in person one day. She also was so very unapologetic in her melanin which really spoke to me without me knowing. 🥰

I (Asian guy) was obsessed with Lauren Hill -- she was ground-breaking back then -- and never having gotten the sophomore album after waiting for years, I've forgotten about her since as life goes on. Anyways, I feel vindicated for my obsession with her retro doo wop r&b, infused with contemporary hip hop -- with Apple Music ranking this the GOAT album. It REALLY is an all-time great album. Am I the only one who considers Lauryn Hill as one of the best singers ever? I mean, she can rap, sing gospel, reggae, soul. She can sing like an angel and suddenly use her hoarse voice with that nasty accent: she gives me goosebumps. She's also beautiful but she never used her beauty to hide some default.

I heard her sing when she came to my country with The Fugees back in the day, honestly no one has ever made me feel the way she did when she sang. Her rapping flow, lyrical prowess gets mentioned a lot but her incredible singing is overlooked too often I think. She is flawless in her execution, roaming all over the stage pitch perfect and her tone, her unique sound is just so fucking stunning!

I think people interpret differently but a hard rock is tough, rough, perhaps even ugly (both inside and out) due to the environment it is subjected to. But a gem is often concealed beneath, and can be so much more. A diamond, for example: beautiful, brilliant, precious, and the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth. Be tough AND precious, recognize and own your incredible (self) worth! That's how I take it :)
