I haven’t seen The whole list yet, but I’m sure there are numbers from many flop Broadway musicals that could easily make this list: the opening number from the 59 musical Juno (based on an Irish play Juno and the Paycock), yellow Drum and others from The Grass Harp, I Never Has Seen Snow, Gonna Leave Off Wearin my Shoes, or A Sleepin Bee, all from House of Flowers. Maman from Matta Hari. And even once your musical is picked, I would have chosen Mama Look Sharp over Sit Down, John. I should make my own list including flops. And Eve Was Weak from the Broadway flop Carrie (4 performances) is a must. So is I Want More from the Lestat musical. Let me know what you guys think of all these songs as all should be on youtube!

1. FEELING GOOD, from The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd. It has become almost ubiquitous, covered by countless artists, most notably Michael Bublé, and even in commercials. Major oversight. 2. Maybe This Time was not used in the original Broadway production; it was only used in the movie. The song "Cabaret" I believe would have been the better choice. 3. Other choices are headscratchers in that you chose a rather obscure song (What Do the Simple Folk Do from Camelot rather than the standard If Ever I Would Leave You; Vanilla Ice Cream from She Loves Me rather than the better-known Will He Like Me, or the title song). 4. Also surprising that you chose the mostly unknown All the Wasted Time from PARADE over the rousing, anthemic opening AND closing ensemble number The Old Red Hills of Home. 5. From Oliver! You Gotta Pick a Pocket or Two is your selection as the best that score has to offer?? The spectacular Who Will Buy, the standard As Long as He Needs Me, CONSIDER YOURSELF?? IMO these are truly gross oversights/omissions.

The top 100 of all time, but nothing by Harold Arlen ("Come Rain or Come Shine," "A Sleepin' Bee," "Over the Rainbow," etc), Burton Lane ("Old Devil Moon," "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," etc), or Kurt Weill ("Mack the Knife," "Speak Low," "Saga of Jenny," etc). Only one song by Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin or Cole Porter, but two by Elton John and William Finn and four by Alan Menken. How about "I"ll Never Fall In Love Again' from PROMISES, PROMISES, or "Lazy Afternoon" from THE GOLDEN APPLE, or 'Here's That Rainy Day' from the admittedly obscure CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS, or "Stranger in Paradise" from KISMET.

Some that you missed: "Go Home with Bonnie Jean" from Brigadoon. "We Need a Little Christmas" from Mame. "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror. "Impossible" from Cinderella. "Any Dream Will Do" from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. "The Telephone Hour" from Bye Bye Birdie. "Another Op'nin Another Show" from Kiss Me Kate. And I don't think I'd have included "Mamma Mia" in this list, it's a great song, but it wasn't written for the show. If you include that, then you have to open your list to all the jukebox musicals, and I think this should be kept to those songs written for the stage.
@Rtotalmagic
@Rtotalmagic Жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, Mamma Mia is the only jukebox musical on this list, which is interesting given the size of the subgenre. There have been plenty of hit Bio-musicals (Beautiful, Jersey Boys, MJ) and several which used pre-existing pop hits to tell an original story (Rock of Ages, Moulin Rouge, & Juliet) and you could form a new Top 100 from these...

You're on the mark with most, and I could quibble with many, but you were really off the mark with 1776. "Sit Down John" is fun and sets the tone for much of the show, but "Is Anybody There" is by far the best song in the show. In Adam's darkest moment, he sings his vision for America. "I see fireworks!" Is inspiring.

Circle of Life should have at least been in the Top 15, but at least My Shot is in the Top 5. Though while I will agree with the #1, I still believe that My Shot could easily be switched with the other numbers, preferably #2 or 3. But I will also admit that that comes from personal bias and a lack of musical knowledge. I have seen the Hamilton Musical on Disney + over 50, maybe even close to a 100 times, yet I have never seen any of the other musicals. Still, I know enough, at least about Le Mis, to know that it deserved #1. PS. as of May 2023, I have now seen Le Mis and, while I still think Hamilton and Soldier of Orange to be better musicals, I have grown to absolutely *love* all of the songs of the musical. Also, I prefer "Do you hear the People Sing" over "One Day More". It's just that this song makes me feel proud of my country - and I'm Dutch, instead of French! Goes to show what a song like that can do, huh.

Hamilton (2015) = 8 years of life Some musicals on here are still performed OVER 50 years later. It will earn it's place if it's worthy over time. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The list only includes one song per musical. I'd like to see a top 100 list of songs from musicals regardless of how many are from any one musical. In such a list, I"d think Le Mis would have quite a few!

My pick for Number one would have been Phantom of the opera or Point of No return. They are both very good songs and the notes on both ends are very good and complimentary to the other part. But a musical you missed was Love Never Dies and unpopular opinion but I love Love Never Dies two of my favorite songs from it are Devil take the Hindmost and the Finale. Ramin and Sierra are the best Phantom and Christine. My second pick would have been Bring Him Home from Les Miserables

I love that Come From Away made this list (I'm an expat Newfoundlander and so incredibly proud of how well the show has done and the way it brought that story and Newfoundland to the world)! The second time I saw it in Toronto I was front row and singing along to Me and the Sky and the actress noticed, so she used it and kept looking at me as she performed. What an experience! ❣

@@katiegratton2544 I wonder if this is based on the fact Singing in the Rain is technically a Jukebox musical (Most of the songs from it came from the late 1920s/early 1930s period depicted, including the title song). But Mamma Mia made it onto the list, so...

I'm sorry, but "Today" is NOT the best song from "A Strange Loop". It's very good, but it's purely expository and it's definitely outshone by many others, including "Intermission Song", "Inner White Girl", "Periodically", "Tyler Perry Writes Real Life", and the title song...(I say this as someone who has now seen the show 22 times and counting)

I don't care that Rita Hayworth did not do her own singing in the film version of "Pal Joey." She ACTS the lyrics and music--her training as a dancer--so convincingly that it doesn't matter. The only trouble was that she was too young and Sinatra too old, but then Hollywood typically played down the intended 20-year difference between Vera and Joey as "distasteful" to the movie audience of the 1950s, but that's the whole point!
