I have been a victim of sexual assault as well as a survivor of 3 suicide attempts... The rape scenes and the suicide was very painful for me, but I'm glad they did it! Rape, sexual assault, suicide are all things that happen to "other people" until they happen to you or someone you love! Then nobody talks about it! This show opened up a very real conversation with a lot of parents and kids! They didn't make it look pretty or downplay any of it, they shoved it right in your face and made you feel sick, angry, shaken, hearbroken!!

I think it's all in how you show and frame it. So like 13 Reasons Why followed none of the recommendations of the suicide prevention committee's list of guidlines for responsible representations of suicide and several copycat suicides occurred. It was irresponsibly done and that took its toll. Of course the show can't be blamed entirely for these people's choices but it's not blameless either. I have no depression or suicidal thoughts and never have and I found the scene just incredibly disturbing and a little traumatizing and made me have intrusive thoughts of these things I had never before even considered. I don't watch that much that does look at suicide to give other examples but even look at the one in season 5 of Buffy where Buffy (after a long battle with depression) martyrs herself and dies. For plot reasons, it's not entirely her dying for its own sake since it has some alterior motives in trying to save her sister and the world, but she does chose to kill herself. And I think it's done really well. It's not glorified (except as her doing something the show shows to be messed up and horrible in the line of duty) and her depression is shown to be unpleasant and horrible and holding her back and hurting her relationships and all aspects of her life and then she comes back to life in the next season and is living in this sort of stasis where she's still depressed as hell and just trying to endure it with no hope for anything better and she makes terrible decisions like sleeping with Spike and eventually she stops that and she connects with her friends and family again and slowly, even on into later seasons a bit, she starts to emerge from the depression. So it shows it in a way that feels really authentic but still painful and difficult and slow but it also shows how she's able to build a better existence for herself and make herself feel better again and free herself from her suicidal instincts. Which I think helps in showing both how hard it can be to have depression and what it's like to experience it, sparking conversation, and also show how it can get better, giving hope. And back again with Buffy I love the rape episode so much for what it did. It showed the hero, this woman who's consistently depicted as unbelievably strong, as someone who could be a victim. Which is invaluable. No one thought any less of her for this also. And it shed light into the toxicity at the heart of Spike and Buffy's relationship which I thought was so important as, likeable as he is at other parts of the show, he had some truly heinous entitled and dependant beliefs and by making him a protagonist and almost a hero in the show he was, until then, excused in that behaviour, or its darker side was ignored. And so this looked at the ways that the sort of behaviour he'd shown already were evident of potential for great violence and a lack or respect for Buffy. And it wasn't gratuitous.

I had suicidal tendencies and struggled with self harm most of my teenage years. I was finally feeling better after I tried to off myself twice in less than a year when I felt strong enough to watch 13 reasons why. The first season is really well made but Hannah’s suicide was distasteful and vile. It violated the privacy of many suicide survivors and people who lost their loved ones. One piece of advice when depicting death, suicide or anything else that could possibly trigger your audience is to not directly allude to or show anything on screen or page. While "13 Reasons Why" eventually censored Hannah's controversial suicide, it came too little, too late for many people.

Having lost 5 people - yes, 5 - to suicide...including my own younger brother, and having attempted it myself, I honestly can't believe that anyone thought that this show is a good idea. It's one thing to have a suicide in a show - Degrassi did it twice over the decades - but they were both one-shot storylines with sensitivity to both the victims and the survivors. 13RW is just torturously stretching it out over seasons.

1. It always shocks me to see a young Olivia Wilde on the OC 2. I always felt like Hannah’s suicide scene was important. Not to make a point on how far a series could go, but to show a victim’s loudest thoughts. Hannah hesitates from the first second to her last. She clearly wanted someone to find her. I wanted to find her! It was heartbreaking. But necessary. As a reminder. I feel the same way when I see this Britney Spears music video in which she attempts suicide in almost the same way.

In the book, Hannah kills herself by overdosing on pills, while I do understand why the show-runners changed it to a form of suicide that does happen, in my opinion how a character dies in a book should not be changed in a tv or film adaptation. And I’m sorry, towards the end of season 2 (was it the finale?) where Tyler gets raped by a broom handle is more graphic in my opinion.

I actually like the fact that they didn't censored any of the hard to watch scenes. In real life those moments are not censored, they don't just jump from him aggressively trying to kiss or take of her clothes off, to her waking up after or walking down the street. Neither the suicide scene. They chose this way of taking her own life so people could see the pain in her eyes, the pain with every cut. In real life, you don't just put the razor blade close to your arm and then bam, you die. No, you have to go through all the hurt of knowingly cutting and hurting yourself. I think the show does a good job at being realistic and relatable. I never experienced any glorifying of the suicide scene or the rape scenes when I watched it. Seeing how brutal it is actually help me understand that I'm not capable of hurting myself that way.

I think you can get across quite serious and scary issues without the specific, explicit gory details being shown. All I have to do is think of Ordinary People and the impact it had on me. Conrad spoke about what he had gone thru, he talked about being in the hospital, they had the scene where he’s being taken away and one of the EMTs says something like he cut up with the vein, he was really serious (I mean, we didn’t need to see Conrad to know what was happening, with his father banging on the bathroom door & the EMT conversation & actually Conrad’s allusions to it when discussing why his mother is still upset w him…) He inexplicably cut off all of his hair, he was a mess. All due to a horrific accident that will haunt him for the rest of his life. It wasn’t necessary to see Conrad’s actual suicide attempt. I don’t see what it would have added, and I was seriously upset throughout most of the film, sobbing my heart out.

I knew going into this video that the season finale of 13 Reasons Why would end up in the top slot of this countdown. I actually applaud the show and its creators for not shying away from the seriousness of the topic of suicide. In the "Tape 7, Side A" episode we saw Hannah providing a cry for help, a very loud cry for help, and having someone who should have been a safe, reliable adult let her down. Was the final scene graphic? Yes, it was, but I don't believe for a minute that it glorified suicide or was included for shock value. They put an uncomfortable, yet very real, image of what so many people go through into the mainstream. It forced many adults to have difficult conversations with their kids that they might not have otherwise had.

Haven’t yet seen the eps following Glees entry w Dave & Blaine dating starting off season 6 (meaning this isn’t a comment comparing what occurred here v what I’m positive is much more gruesome in the upcoming shows ahead. QAF wasn’t a teen drama, but there was an unbelievably scary gay bashing at the end of season 1, so I can guess at what might occur. Glee itself had Dave attempt suicide and Quinn was in what appeared to be t most frightening road accident I’ve seen on tv OR in the movies.) So. Having made my qualification, I just wish to say that of course, CC being a tremendously fine actor, he made the audience feel his gut wrenching pain of that moment. But moving away from Kurt’s immediate reaction, or even the fact that he himself had forgiven Dave for the hell he had put Kurt thru thruout high school, it’s a completely different thing for BLAINE to date the boy that had threatened to kill his fiancé (ex-fiancé). Dave might not have truly meant to actually, literally “kill” Kurt, but Max Adler is also a wonderful actor & I honestly believed that Kurt was in danger of being raped in a restroom and/or being beaten within an inch of his life. Kurt had actually grown at this point (he no longer resembled an eleven yr old milkmaid) but even so, he was still about one third the size of Dave (or maybe it just appeared that that way). In any case, that was the worst case scenario, following his attempt to start something w Kurt - clearly without his consent - and it came on the heels of years of being shoved into lockers, tossed into dumpsters, having pee balloons apparently thrown at him. The one nonsurprising element of the show was that Kurt showed an interest in the suicide pamphlets at the beginning of sophomore year, bc no matter how much he wasn’t willing to show on the outside, he was miserable on the inside. He was strong about some things - his love for his dad, how much he cared about his friends once he made some - but his self esteem was crap. I’m not saying this, well. A better analogy would,be that my sisters or my close friends could date, even marry certain men, but once they cheated on them or hit them or did something bad, no matter WHAT my sister or friend decided they were going to do, I personally NEVER forgot what they had done & it remained in the back of mind, ready to spring out if he should mess up again. And I would NEVER, EVER date any of the guys that my sisters or friends dated for any serious length of time. (Meaning if they happened to go out one time that was one thing, but if they saw one another for a couple of months, even if they didn’t consider it really important, they were no longer datable. ) The fact that Blaine met Kurt bc Dave was making his life so miserable and terrifying that KURT ACTUALLY CHANGED SCHOOLS TO GET AWAY makes the idea of him dating Dave, even a couple of years later, beyond ridiculous. He could become friends w him, perhaps, to try and build up the self esteem of a guy who actually tried to take his own life (altho it appeared as if Dave was attempting to fix that thru sex w every bear in the community). But the two of them dating was creepy, especially bc he had shown a scary interest in dating Kurt (right before his life went to hell). In fact, I’m probably reading too much into this, but when Blaine and Dave finally break up bc Blaine cheats (yet again) except this time it’s w his soulmate - not a random from social media - Dave makes a point in asking which of the two of them made a move on the other, and I got the idea that he continues to have this idealized version of Kurt in his head. (That really is probably just me, but I think that every time I watch that episode.) Blaine dating him was wrong on so many levels. I think the writers must have been smoking crack. For real.

I watched 13 Reasons Why in middle school. MIDDLE SCHOOL! I was like 13! I’m just now realizing while watching this video that that’s way to young to watch that show. Like seriously, I was barely a teenager but that was when the show first came out so nobody talked about how graphic and traumatizing the show can be so I stuck with the show since the last freaking season when I was finally in high school. The scene that really traumatized me for years after watching the show was Tyler’s assault. I still think about that scene sometimes.

Before I proceed with the video, I honestly came here for Euphoria. The show as a whole is filled with shocking moments so well put together and talking about serious subject in a very raw and a real/no-nonsense way, that it is the only thing I think about when "shocking" and "show" is mentioned.

I dunno, as shocking as Euphoria is, it's not half as bad as 13 Reasons Why, when I'm watching Euphoria I can separate the fact that what I'm seeing is a made up show, not memories of things that were actually done to me, 13 Reasons Why is still very painful because the show literally triggers memories that are excruciating for me to remember.

I remember that they couldn't even show the entirety of "Accidents Will Happen" in the states. The N just took the B plots of both parts and called them "Extras" so we wouldn't be confused why Toby and Jimmy got detention and why Liberty is dating Towerz.

I don’t know if anyone else have thought of this but I can’t help but think about how Hannah recorded all of those tapes all while knowing she was going to kill herself. Like how do you do so much prep for something like this all while being fully ready to kill yourself? Did she not have a second of doubt while thinking about what to say in the tapes. Or is it all just the whole ‘maybe they’ll listen to me when I’m dead’?

I'm a little surprised that Ms Mojo found the Gossip Girl threesome to be underwhelming. I remember watching it when it came out and gasping. I get that they didn't show everything (which I wouldn't expect because it's primetime tv on a basic channel) but they do show a bit more in the following episode as well. But, as a fan, that moment felt big because I had never seen a threesome on that kinda show yet, Hilary Duff still felt like a child star so it was crazy to see her having an adult threesome, and it felt like I had waited FOREVER for Dan and Vanessa to hook up.

Am I the only who actually prefers the graphic part in 13rwtape7. I mean yes it's horrific to watch but that's exactly the point. There's no sugar coating it, suicide is horrible for everyone involve, by showing that scene you actually see how gruesome, sad and awful it is. But that's just me, it's not suitable for everyone but it is eye opening for anyone to see how terrible it is and how it was led to it.

Greetings, I sincerely want to comment on the following, it makes me a little hypocritical to put Buffy and in the juvenile dramas since that situation with Spike, although it is delicate, we must also remember that Buffy many times when she wanted to have sex and Spike had to be subdued as when Buffy is Invisible and there was no complaint, but when the situation was reversed Then it became a drama and Spike became the Villain And that part Since I saw it many years ago it never seemed fair to me. I think that the gender issue really makes it bigger than it is, Buffy was also very Abusive And that part is not Commented, it is taken with humor, the abuse also existed from Buffy and there is not Commented. On the other hand, in the case of Hannah Baker, the entire series is focused on a suicide and it is natural that it is in the first places, but honestly, it is good. I consider that the way in which the veins are cut is very impressive, I think that the scene where Jimmy Edward commits suicide and what he says here is more painful, it is a stronger scene and it was only put together in 2 chapters. I think Jimmy's death deserved a better place
