I’ve used my Windburner just over 2 years and probably has about 300 days of use on it. Maybe they made adjustments to the cup but mine is the original and does not get stuck. When cooking (not only boiling water) I like to use the MSR sauce pot. It actually works well as I’ve cooked eggs, pancakes etc on it. I think the sauce pan has more ventilation so the pan doesn’t get as hot like the wind burner 1 L pot. The only negative I can think of with this system is my indicator wire came off and the wired mesh on the top is starting to come apart. Just contacted MSR so hopefully they can fix it. Thanks for the review. Cheers

Really great and helpful review, bud - especially as I've been looking at getting one of these. The AeroPress comment made me chuckle too - I say exactly the same thing about it - life-changing! 😂👍🏻

I insulated the,cup with foil from a car windscreen insulator. And have a small piece as a cover, this then i,use as a.porridge maker. Love the msr because of its altitude and cold valve adjuster...means it boils real well at altitude. And you use every scrap of the gas. I use a MSR plate with upturned edges as a base when cooking in the tent.

Excellent review. I own a jetboil and enjoy using it. After this true to life product review I would most likely buy one once the jetboil give up the ghost. Thank you.

My mrs bought me a jetboil a few years ago. It’s never failed me unless on frozen summits. But I do want the msr reactor 1.7l for snow melting. For snow I have a Optimus Polaris liquid stove. As I’m dialing in my kit my son will just get the jet boil. Great summary 👍🏼

Have you considered using the MSR Windburner duo system? If I were to pick a stove for military applications, I'd want the duo for being lower to the ground and more stable, without the need for a fuel stand.

Great review good to see a proper one as well that has been done after it has been threw the mill. I use a pathfinder and trangia because the fuel can be located most places. Thing with gas is if your going abroad you can’t get the canister onboard. Amount of lad that went on exercise overseas and into theatre but didn’t have the supply of gas. But great review of the product thanks.

Cheers buddy 👍🏻 Those trangia stoves are excellent 👌🏻 I hear that about the gas, I actually just got back from abroad myself and used the little fire dragon stoves the whole time as that's the only thing I could get haha. Gotta do what you gotta do for a brew sometimes 😂

I always think about what I’m doing where I’m going and what works you’ve got to adjust your kit all the time thing with trangia is you’ve got to carry fuel with it. But I see the pathfinder kit universal as it can go with gas/liquid fuel and solids wonder how/what the results would be if the jet boil were to be on coal.

Absolutely, it's good to have options for every situation. When me and the Mrs go on little get aways we actually use an MSR liquid fuel stove called a simmerlite (very similar to the whisperlite) fantastic little stove that runs on unleaded petrol or Coleman fuel, love that thing so powerful and a ltr of unleaded costs nothing compared to gas. Could be worth looking at sometime if you like having good flame control but don't want to pay for gas all the time. No good for tours and stuff tho as you will have to carry liquid fuel just like the trangia but fantastic for camping and stuff 👍🏻

I have a windburner 1 liter. I personally love it. The measuring cup underneath is a flaw because the cap on the top is a tight fit. If you put the measuring cup on the bottom and then put pressure on the lid to pop that on. Your measuring cup will pop into this ring you showed in the video. Almost impossible to get off. I did it yesterday took me 5 minutes putting on a ton of force working it . But i understand you getting a screwdriver and forcing it off breaking the damn thing. So the measuring cup is the last thing you put on when disassembling after cooking. Pop the lid of the pot on first and then the measuring cup on the bottom. Even when careful this bottom cup will get stuck at one point in your pack. Except for that, great system. I recently did a test of fuel consumption between the windburner 1 L and pocket rocket 2. I didn't time it but fuel consumption wise the windburner is 50% more efficient then the pocket rocket 2 in boiling 0,5 liter water at room temp in windless conditions. Windburner used 6 grams and the pocket rocket 2 12 grams. Both very fast but the difference in consumption is surprising.

Some excellent points there thank you 👍🏻 A friend of mine did point out that you can trim off the bits that stick out with a sharp craft knife then the cup cannot get stuck on. A bit late for me unfortunately, but could be worth a note for future 👍🏻

@Mart687 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatBritishChap.I didn't think of that. I was thinking maybe find a plastic ring like some pvc pipe so you can't push this measuring cup up that far so it gets stuck. Thinking about it. Do you ever use this measuring cup? You've used this system for a long time. Have you used this cup for drinking coffee or tea or for measuring water? There's measurement marks in the pot itself. I haven't used it. I know you can't use it anymore cause yours is cracked for the second time. But why is it even on there. To prevent dirt and fluff getting inside this heating distribution system at the bottom of the pot? Why not scrap the cup and put the windburner in a thin pouch?
@ThatBritishChap.

I used to use it for wet shaving but that's about it. I just use it now to put things in to keep off the ground when I am using it. You're not wrong though, I should probably just hurl it in the bin haha its not exactly fit for purpose anymore 😂

I just wish for the high price that MSR would have included a built-in piezo igniter and something to make this compatible with other pots (like a universal pot stand) at the very least.
@ThatBritishChap.
@ThatBritishChap. 2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes a piezo ignition would certainly be helpful. As for the pot stand do you mean the way it connects to the burner head? If so then I believe that is to allow for a sealed connection to the burner to allow no wind to get in. I have used it with a frying pan before just held an inch or so above and this did work quite well. I believe msr do also manufacture some other pot attachments for it as well 🤔
@KatrinaOutside
@KatrinaOutside 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatBritishChap. Yeah some kind of pot stand that would allow you to use any pot with it (rather than having to buy MSR pots that are compatible) would be nice. But alas, ‘tis their intention most likely.
@ThatBritishChap.
@ThatBritishChap. 2 жыл бұрын
@@KatrinaOutside one thing that you may be able to do is get a couple of metal kebab sticks or similar and lay them across the top of the burner head opposite each other, this might allow enough gap and surface area to lay a pot or pan onto to cook with 👍🏻 flat ones might be best actually so they cannot roll off 🤔

Ah thanks 👍🏻 I like to get a good impression of kit before I pass judgement on it. Not to say that you can't get a good impression from something on first glance. That's Warrior Assault Systems webbing. It's pretty good, nice and light and has great ability to customise. But not quite as much load capacity as say Jayjays of brecon webbing though.

I personally like the "technique"/"science" behind such stoves, but I always use Alcohol Stoves (Or, if allowed/possible simple wood) - I simple don't like the noice Jetboil, Windburner & Co produce. It's for me, personally, simple more relaxin' to use an Alcohol Stove or cook over a open flame. But(t!) I'm geatfull for reviews like yours, so I can satisfy my curiosity :)

Can you put anything else on top? A frying pan for example to cook somthing? Or a bigger pot?
@ThatBritishChap.
@ThatBritishChap. 3 жыл бұрын
There is an MSR specific frying pan you can get that clicks onto it just like the original pot. But in terms of using a conventional pan, I've never tried, you could definitely hold one over it. But if you placed one onto it I'm not sure if there would be any way for the excess heat to escape as the pan would likely seal to the burner heads completely flat rim.
