double thanks for not including any music or other dramatic considerations. the strong breathing, the coughing, the wind, the crunch of the cramps on the snow, the plangent noises of equipment and tools. this is what we want when watching our vicarious climbs.

You see what type of person you are when one of the first things you say as you reach the summit is that it's your Mother's birthday! So thoughtful, and humbling. While I'm not sure I'd ever in my life have the ability to climb Everest, I'm grateful for people like you who work hard to document the incredible feat and share it with all of us! Thank you!!

For the last 2 weeks I have had You Tube Everest fever and have watched just about all the films but this one stood out as one of the best, an honest account. My tributes still go to the guides who do so much preparation to make it safer and more possible for the teams to summit, and what a big team it was to reach the summit. Congrats to Li-Lan Cheng and his team.

@@GodsRemote its pretty common there, there are piles of dead bodies and they use them as landmarks to mark where they are going. its pretty sad that they cant retrieve the bodies since its too difficult and risky

@@GodsRemote It is a real corpse, and on the south face it has more bodies than on the north. It is a sad and macabre memory, but a reality. moreover, rescuing one body can put others at risk, and many climbers want to stay there if they die ...

They become a solid block of ice and are very hard to move. Oftentimes they’ll push them over a ledge. Remember Green Boots on the south side - has to practically step over him - and the woman spread over the rock upside down facing up? Both moved now but as said they were landmarks.

@@GodsRemote almost certainly, sadly. The frosting on the outer clothing tells me theyve now become fastened to the mountain by being frozen to it, which is a great indicator they are long since deceased. The body position, the altitude and the time are great information, because nobody would survive for long laying down at such height in darkness, and it tells me that person has long since departed this mortal coil. Rest in peace.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Many people are fascinated by Everest and mountain climbing, but not all have the time and money to actually do it. I feel I'm fortunate to be able to climb and want to share the experience by making this video as closely reflect what it's like up on the mountain as possible. I'm glad you liked it.

9 times out of 10 these outdoor adventure videos are ruined with ridiculous music and a camera that won't leave the camera operators' face. I want to hear crampons crunch the snow and labored breathing, not guitar power chords. The 'details' as you call them, routine chores and sharing hot co-co, work to bring me closer to the action. This is the model for any outdoor adventure video.

Youre right but these guys barely have the energy to carry themselves up these mountains barely a camera while theyre wasting breath talking. Imagine their sherpas carrying their shit. Especially when its some asshole who makes the sherpa carry shit like heated tents or dining tables

I have to say, this video is excellent, actually hearing the breathing, Crampons, and the most important the prayers to the Goddess of the mountain. The people who died prayers to their families. The total detail and the camaraderie between these climbers are so awesome. Congratulations on all you climbers for you showed humbleness when going up there, to each other and to the mountain. Kudos to your guides for they showed the humbling and spark. Truly amazing and thank you for sharing the best video ever.

This comment is 4 years too late, but congratulations on an amazing achievement. Also, your video is one of the best I have found of the northern ascent, and what it looks like along the way. It is very hard to visualize that route when you have not been there, and your video made things much more clear in my mind. I also very much appreciate the lack of music, effects, etc. (as others have said here as well). Just the sight and sounds of you actually performing the climb. I wish more climbers would post their experience exactly this way. If I ever decide to climb Everest myself, I would follow the same route (China/Tibet/Rongbuk), and I would hope to be able to go with the same guide team that you used. Excellent work, and all the best to you!

Better than any documentary I've ever seen. Raw, real footage without any fancy editing or cuts or music, nothing. Just the team and the mountain. I really enjoyed the ceremony to the goddess of the mountain. I have never seen that in anyone else's footage, or if it was there it wasn't explained. I think that's a wonderful bit of culture that adds so much to the video. Everest is simply stunning. The sense of scale is completely thrown off. You simply have nothing to compare it too so it goes from looking like any old mountain to, oh yeah, this thing is 6 miles tall. Having climbed quite a few 14k ft mountains in Colorado US I know nothing quite compares to standing on a peak... I can't imagine that feeling multiplied by standing on top of Everest. What an unbelievable view, and the knowledge that nowhere on our entire planet can someone stand taller than you. Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.

I found your footage to show what all the others missed. I actually felt like I was on the expedition with your team climbing the mountain right along side of you. Maybe it's an illusion, but this team 'appears' better organized, better equipped, more disciplined than all other teams I've studied climbing from Nepal side of the mountain. I'd love to watch another awesome video of the same awesome team take on equally awesome mountains like K2, Annapurna, the Eiger and Mt. Davis. Congrats!! Thank you sir! In terms of equipment, I think everyone has pretty much the same gear. But I do think that my team was better organized and more disciplined than most. During summit push, each of us had a guide right next to us. We were never allowed to unclip from the fixed rope unless done by the guide, so there was never a possibility of anyone going missing. We were not allowed to take our gloves off on summit day to prevent frostbite. And our guide would radio the team leader the time each of us passed key milestones, so the team leader could monitor everyone's speed and turn someone back if he/she was too slow. And there were backup guides on standby at each camp in case something went wrong. When we heard about problems or deaths on the south side, it sounded that they were mostly preventable with better management.

Wow .. you confirmed my observation about better team management / superior game planning and execution. I haven't detected this methodical approach with any other modern day expeditions. It's a fascinating study in team work/risk management/and group goals. There appears to be greater and tighter cohesion among Chinese climbers than climbers from other countries. Great cinema photography! The viewer is right there with you each step of the way. I nominate you to be mankind's ambassador to Mars mission so we can experience it along the same light. Congrats again sir. So exciting for us over here to watch you "take it to the top"!!!

Li-Lan .. you are most excellent of mountaineer adventurer climbers / photographers / videoographers. Besides the porters who labor to get all that gear up there .. the guy with the camera is the unsung hero in my book as that in of itself can be exhausting even at sea level .. let alone 5 miles in the sky with 180 mph winds bearing down on you at temperatures that would scare off even the bravest of polar bears. Amazing!!

Francis Siegfried Thank you for the kind words. Actually it wasn't that hard to film. I had a sports camcorder strapped to my chest inside my down suit. When I wanted to film I just pulled the zipper down and pressed the button. My guide had my small camera and could film me climbing. Temperature on the night of the summit push was about -20F, which is considered mild. More importantly, winds were calm, no more than 20 mph. We would have canceled summit push if it had been more than 35 mph.

Ive been watching a lot of docu? or self docu of reaching the summit of mount everest but this one from Li Lang-Cheng is the best, reality from the start to finished i even feel the hardship of climbing, the dead landmark and the feelings once you reach the summit! eventhough it is four years ago! Congrats to your team Li Lang-Cheng you made it to the top of the world without lossing teammates and sherpas! But the master of your wallet is gone😃

Yes. They used to work as porters for Western teams and under the Nepali Sherpas, but many of them have become as good as if not better than the Sherpas. And the organization of the team was excellent, which maximized success and safety.

You probably won't see this now that a year has gone by, but wow. This is amazing. I had always looked at pictures of Everest and thought, "that doesn't even look that tall!" But watching this spectacular and raw footage shows how ridiculously difficult this adventure is. Quite a ride.

I watched this film for the second time. Still the best first-person climbing video I have ever seen. As someone who teaches filmmaking and reads a lot of books about mountain climbing, I can appreciate the challenge of getting to the top of Everest, while shooting such great footage. Mr. Cheng, I have watched countless movies and videos of attempts to conquer Everest but yours by far is the true POV experience. I know I will never muster the strength and must say the intestinal fortitude to do such a Herculean feat but watching your amazing video is a good as I could ever ask to experience it without being there. I LOVE this - its really "you are there" type footage and commentary - not clinical and sterile like so many mountaineering docus. Waiting at The Steps; looking down the deadly traverse; watching the boots of my colleague ahead in the light of my headtorch. For 50 minutes I WAS on Everest. THANK YOU Li-Lan.

Im curious @53:40 with each step if it felt unstable with the crampons on the bare rock with such little room for foot placement?

BigEarlPearl1 The narrowest part was a bit scary, with only 2-3 inches of space to plant my feet. But the video makes it look more dangerous because the rocky slope is not vertical. As I leaned on the cliff, the camcorder strapped to my chest was shooting at an angle, making it appear that the cliff was vertical. You can tell from the mountains in the distance that were all tilted. So as long as you really embrace the cliff and don't look down too much on your left, you can get over this section pretty quickly. It's only about 100-120 feet long.

BigEarlPearl1 one reason the north side is more difficult than the south side is that the route above 7500m is mostly on bare rocks, reducing the crampon's purchase. congratulations to your entire team. Great footages, pictures quality were great, I loved the fact that you didn't edit your breathing sound. it gave an added layer of excitement for the viewers.
