Japan has some beautiful hiking spots! Mt. Hiei (Hiezan) rises 848m from the surrounding Kyoto area. It has central Kyoto on one side, Lake Biwa on the other, and is accessible by bus, cable car, ropeway, car... and by foot! The world heritage site of Enryakuji Temple is also located near the summit, and you can find out more details about the mountain, the temple, and how to get there on their website: www.hieizan.gr...
I recorded the hike on Strava, so you can see this link if you want to view the actual route and mileage data from this day: / strava

On my bucket list. I have heard monks used to climb daily from one temple to another. Or maybe to haul water from below. I also heard one temple near the top was destroyed a long time ago but now rebuilt.

I hope you can go one day soon! That's really interesting - I didn't know that about the water. I did learn that Enryaku-ji Temple was burned down in 1571 when Oda Nobunaga invaded and rebuilt overtime after that. It has such a long history from its founding in the late 700s

This looks awesome, would you know if theres anywhere you can purchase bear mace in Kyoto or nearby areas? I'd be terrified to run into a bear but having some mace would give me some peace of mind

I haven't bought any bear spray here so someone else may know better than me - but Montbell or other similar outdoor stores would likely have it. It's listed on Montbell's japan site here: en.montbell.jp/products/goods/list.php?category=369660

strava.app.link/4q7RCLXQFKb Here’s the hike on Strava so you can see the point we started on a map - I stopped the recording at the ropeway on the way down. Hope that helps!

How exciting! We started at this trailhead (goo.gl/maps/Bgw3r27WNWotqYde6 ) after taking bus 17 to the Shugakuin Eki mae stop (goo.gl/maps/kBuCS1C25axHmmRQ9 ), and following the river canal up to the trail. It was pretty steep at the start, but the trail was very easy to follow. I think you could also take the train to Shūgakuin Station if you wanted an option other than the bus. Once at the top, we took the Eizan ropeway and cable car down, and got the bus from the Yase Eki mae stop to get back.
