This is our trip of Mt. Yamnuska. Such a great hike. You can see why it's so popular. Great #scrambling and the chain section is a blast. Some good vertigo inducing views over the cliff faces as well. a nice 4.5 hour return trip. #thenorthface

Thanks for all your great videos Harlan. My sons and I hiked Yamnuska last Tuesday and it took us about five hours. Your videos really helped prepare me for what to expect. Thank you!

Great to see other people’s perspectives. I’m pretty scared of scrambling and when I did tent ridge I almost turned around until I followed somebody and watched their every step on the scramble up. But Yamnuska I felt perfectly fine and thought the climbing was super fun. Not sure if it’s the different angles of climbing or different levels of exposure or what but I still today don’t understand all the warnings about the Yamnuska scramble. I was more scared on tent ridge, south Lawson, and king creek ridge lol

Well good job on Yam! People underestimate it every year. Not a huge mountain but lots of opportunity in poor weather for things to go wrong. Ice been up it several times. Great views on Tent Ridge as well. CHEERS!

I just did this last Sunday. Sadly, your descent route is now closed (reclaiming trails). Still, that one slope right after the brown soft scree near the summit was so much fun. I think that was optional, you can side-slope from the ridge to the col where you start going around Yamuska's ridge line @ the foot of the wall. All the sights were blocked by forest fires but still, great little route. And so close to Calgary too. Thanks for sharing, your channel is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in hiking/scrambling in the Canadian Rockies.

....Thanks Jose! It is a great climb. I did not know they had made some trail alterations. Thanks for the heads up! Glad you enjoyed it also! More videos are coming as well. Just posted one tonite. See you out there one day. Take care!

@@HarlanFox--Scrambles and anyone else reading, not 100% sure that last big slope was marked as off-limits (a few other trails were, with new-ish signs). I remember it didn't look like a route people had been using recently. Regardless, there's plenty soft scree for a bit of dirt skiing fun on the way down.

By “All the sights were blocked by forest fires”, do you mean just the smoke from other fires or is there fires right in the area? Thanks.

Would you consider Mt. Yamnuska a mountain beginners can take on? I'm planning to climb this mountain on my own in a few weeks and just hoping to get some input... If it helps , I'd consider myself average when it comes to physical fitness but I know I have good flexibility. Also in all of the videos of yours that I've seen(still in the process of going through everything) you've always had a companion. Is there a mountain in the Kananakis area(or just close to Calgary) that you think anyone can do on their own that is ideally just a day trip that won't take more than 7 hours? I understand it's a big no no to go solo on hiking trips but I'm not really comfortable going on adventures with people I don't know and no one I know is available on the dates I'm going so..

It can be a beginners mountain depending on the route you choose. Taking the section that involves using the chains is likely not a good beginner choice. There is another way to the top that takes the chains out of play. Everyone's opinion on hiking solo is different. I think it is just fine.....however if doing so you need to be prepared....GPS/emergency beacon, map or route knowledge, bear spray, good hiking gear, clothes for unexpected weather, leaving loved ones a detailed description of where ou are, etc. There are many mountains that you can do that I would say can be done in 5 hours round trip or so. Some good day trip mountains are Mt.Baldy, Opal South, Yamnuska, East End of Rundle, Lady mac teahouse, Wasooth Peak, etc. Best of luck deciding. Hopefully this helps.

@@HarlanFox--ScramblesThe chain part is actually the part I'm most excited about! I know I'll never be a rock climber(don't have the heart for that) but I feel like going through that part might be the closest thing to it, haha! Thanks for the tip! I've got my survival pack ready in case things go awry. Actually, more than anything else my biggest fear is getting eaten by a bear.. Anyway I'll definitely look into the other mountains you've mentioned too! I'm thinking that after Yamnuska and I still have more time and energy on that day, I'll just go right next to another mountain.

Great video! Just wondering, is the chain section as hard as it looks? I’ve done a few scrambles but heights still seem to scare me. Nevertheless looks like a fun hike, might give it a try in a few weeks.
@HarlanFox--Scrambles
@HarlanFox--Scrambles 5 жыл бұрын
That is a tough question and hard to answer as everyone's perception of what is hard and what is easy is relative to their perspective. Personally, I had a healthy fear of heights when I did it but thought I would just persevere my way across. It was better than I thought. That is just me though. My tolerance for exposure is greater now. Worst case scenario is you turn around right?? Best of luck deciding. I think you would be fine now that you have a few scrambles under your belt.
