POC System VPD... light, breathable, I put them on and forget about them until I need them. Not the most protective but I’ve fallen onto roots and rocks and only incurred very minor injury. Pedal all day, stay put, and way better than POCs other offerings in regards to comfort.

You should also mention that the RaceFace pads fully open up from the back so you can remove them without taking off your shoes. It seems like a silly detail to mention but it’s one of the things I like the most about those pads. After a hot long day of riding it’s really nice to be able to immediately take off the knee pads without having to take off your shoes. It also easier to carry these in you pack and slip them on for the downhill since you don’t have to take off your shoes.

In terms of comfort: Do you use them for 20 miles plus rides, too, or do you put them on for downhill only because of their size? Since they're open at the back, their ventilation doesn't look too bad either...
@Esteb858
@Esteb858 6 жыл бұрын
When I first got them I did use them on 20 plus mile rides without a problem but since they are easy to remove and put on without taking off your shoes, it's easy to strap them to your pack for the climb and then just put them on for the descents.

Dianese Trail Skins for me, they work great. They're good in between pads, though I do use them for DH frequently. Haven't tried the Trail Skin 2s yet, they look more G-formy, which isn't a bad thing. Fox Launch Enduro knee pads for XC rides when I feel I need some protection. I use the Launch Enduro elbow pads as well, but only when riding DH.

I have a pair of Fox enduro pads I wear on pretty much every ride. They don't have the most impact protection, but they do great in a slide and that is all I really need them to do. I can also pedal all day in them without any issue. In my opinion the safest pads are the ones you are gong to wear.

I just bought a pair of G-Forms last week and did my first ride in them (or any kneepad) on a 21-miler. After the first five minutes, I didn't notice that I had them on. Thankfully, no crashes, so I didn't get to test out the protection aspect, but they are super comfortable. It was hot Saturday, and the ventilation seemed adequate.

I use well ventilated motocross pads because they are a third of the price and I love them. They are not comfy for pedalling tho so I only use them for the downhills, other than that they are pretty good and I combo them with shin pads which help them stay in place so neato magneto. Great video as always. have a nice day:)

FYI the sticky rubber strip is silicone. Sounds like a lot of the pads have non-newtonian materials in them these days. D3O were among the first to market such materials where the materials resistance to a force (ie impact) is dependent on the velocity of the force. Cool tech as it allows the pads to be flexy for easier pedalling (a slow force application) but the material stiffens up during an impact (fast force application) to give more energy absorption ability than regular foam of similar thickness. Human bone is non-newtonian to, but in the opposite manner. You can fracture a human bone with a much lower force if the force is applied slowly compared to applying the force quickly.

I'm amazed at how little attention there is to ankles and back of the shins. Every time I crash, or even when I don't crash that's where all the pain is. I started wearing these soccer shin guards that have padding around the sides by Storelli.

I started using the G-form pads this year, after riding for 12 years without knee pads. Naturally, I went OTB with 2 tuck-n-rolls down some rock steps on my very 1st ride with them ;) Awesome protection! The biggest bonus is they fold up very small to stick in your pack for climbs, and are light weight as well. However, you should buy them to fit a bit tight, since they don't have straps, but after a few mins, I forget I'm wearing them
@gogovitch66

Thx for that! 👍 The Fox pads look interesting with that side protection :) I use the POC and love 'em. For rocky and rooty DH I use LEATT Hybrid (with shin pretection) though, as they combine hardening gel and a hardshell on top to slide off those rocks and roots. They stay well in place but are not the most comfy ones for pedalling ;) There is a knee-only version of the Hybrids that I'm curious about, how they feel on pedalling ;)

I have purchased a used Giant Glory DH , that I like very much nd am soo stoked to ride . I need some ideas. I also want pads that cover some of the shin. Those race face u just showcased i like .

That said, and maybe it’s just me, but the seemingly random order in which the pads were presented was a little annoying/confusing. Any opinion on the Race Face Charge? I chose them for their back material was soft and breathable. - comparable to the POC VPD Air - but very thin cushion. Is something like that even sensible to wear? They don't look like offering much protection of anything.. Maybe i need something with a hard shell.. I pedal a lot so they gotta be flexible. Hmm. I just want basic protection for commuting and a bit through the woods. Nothing crazy. Any advise?

Thank you! Yes very good knee pad with great protection, very comfortable as well. What kind of riding do you mostly do?

I do mostly chunky trails and a little bit of jumps . I like the pads. A Calling would be my dream bike for what I do...in Canada, you have to get a mortgage if you want an Evil....I could get it from the States, but then I would have to pay a 20% duty and it would get even more expensive...🤔

If you’re going to do a proper review , I think it makes sense to specify what people are paying for. the specific properties/ composition that makes each knee pad should’ve been at least mentioned. This is coming from a person who is getting into the Industry. This way it avoids people doing google searches on properties about certain knee pads.

Any advice on spine protection. I took a bad fall last year on my home trail and broke a few transverse vertebrae in my lower back. I have been injured badly a few times but these one really scared me. Any advice is welcome, thanks

If u want serious spine protection then look at mx body armour, as it is made to withstand a lot more force. Things to look for are CE certifications on the armour pads themselves, not on the vest or whatever the armour sits in. Another good thing is D30 or any of its equivilants. Normally there a soft, gel like pad that hardens significantly upon impact. That means there comfy when ur riding but protective if u crash. U can just get a vest, which has back/chest plates only, or u could get a t shirt one, which normally has shoulder pads as well. I prefer the full jacket design, that has chest/back, shoulder, elbow and sometimes hip
