The "Voice" cycle was a great humbling and learning experiece for new players. Almost a "New Player Bait" cycle. I started playing back un Urza's block and one of my first decks was a "Protection" deck. Why wouldn't it work. The angels along with Circle of Protecions would make you invincible. Of course it didn't work, but thanks to realizing why it didn't made me learn a lot about how the game and decks work.

They fixed the issue with Voice of All, which was a decent card back then since it was so flexible.

I remember back when I was first learning to play Magic with Portal: Second Age, Angel of Fury was one of the greatest threats at the kitchen table at the time. Of course, the power level of the Portal sets was generally a lot lower.

the one saving grace (ha.ha.ha.) for Voice of Grace is that her Protection from Black made her immune to the damage from cards like Pestilence, which let her feature in the Plague precon from Urza's Saga, the very first precon I ever owned. Having her in play kept Pestilence alive and kicking.

Ahhh angels, one of my personal favourite creature types, so even the bad ones are wanted. Personally, I think any of these could still make it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!

Haunted Angel is a really cool design. It would be fun to play with if it was a bit harder to remove it, like giving it hexproof or something.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but I think that it's kind of bad even with hexproof. Still becomes kind of useless when your opponent gets creatures on the board, and even if it's bigger, you have to be so afraid of the simplest little combat tricks. Maybe 4/4 hexproof? I thought about 5/5 for a second, but that's gotta be broken...

I play Sustaining Spirit in my Roon of the Hidden Realm Spirit tribal deck. It's a bit of a late-game desperation play, but casting Sustaining Spirit and exiling it with Roon during my upkeep ensures that my opponents can really only kill me with damage during my own turn. And since blinking causes the Age counters to drop off, I can afford to pay the upkeep for one or two turns if I have other things I want to do with Roon besides blinking the Spirit.

That twist around Voice of Truth was fantastic and hilarious. It's as niche and situational as the others but simply because it came out at a different time it became relevant and useful.

I remember Amonkhrt randomly having two really bad angels, Winged Shepherd (6 mana 3/3 flying and vigilance, Cycling:W) and Angel of the God-Pharaoh (6 mana 4/4 flying, Cycling:(2))

Cycling for just one mana doesn't seem that bad if you ignore the rest of the card and treat it as a white cantrip.

It would still avoid the top 10 worst cards because of the fact that they're rarely dead on hand (cycle if too early, summon if late game) and that they're legit Living End / Living Death / Mass-reanimator targets. You wouldn't first pick them, but their cycling at least makes them convenient choices

@@stigmaoftherose playing a card solely for its 1 mana cycling is only good in very very niche situations, like if you’re in a combo deck that somehow doesn’t have actual card draw or if you’re in a cycling deck, like in Ikoria limited. That’s not enough to save a horrible card.

@andyspendlove1019 I'm almost exclusively an edh player so I'm more focused on how a card can be used in a mono white deck where card draw can be either group hug, enchantress effects, or super expensive mana sinks often with lifegain requirements so a one mana cycling would sometimes be a godsend just to thin the deck.

Some of the mythic angels over the years while not as horrendous as some of these one mentioned, are certainly… something. Angel of destiny’s bizarre life mutual lifegain/alternate win con, enduring angel’s ludicrous activation condition, Anya merciless Angel is just a dud of a commander card being a beat stick that relies on your opponents not actually having 0 and losing but still losing and low on health to be useful . But my god, the worst of the all remains Goldknight Castigator. It’s 1 use it putting it in decks that “donate” cards to your opponents and let them deal with all that extra damage they’ll now take.

Given that Goldnight Castigator was in the same block as Harmless Offering, I think she was probably always intended as Donate fodder.

No mention of Seraph from Ice Age? 7 mana for a 4/4 was pretty bad, even by the standard of those days.

Most creatures would look pretty bad if you pretend they have a completely blank text box. Seraph's abilities are pretty potent. Your opponent was unlikely to actually block it with anything it could steal, but if you have a 4/4 flyer that's getting through every turn, you're probably doing okay. I'm not saying it was a format-defining card or anything, but back when people were excited about paying eight mana for Scaled Wurm, Seraph wasn't bad.

@@davidlundquist1979 also the interaction of the two parts of the abilities meant if Seraph traded you kept the creature forever, so seraph essentially is built-in 2 for 1 (at a cost in mana efficiency)

I always like looking for other candidates on these. Some I found: Angel of Light - 5 mana 3/3 flyer with vigilance Angel of Mercy - 5 mana 3/3 flyer that gains you 3 life when it enters play Angelic Curator - 2 mana 1/1 flyer with Protection From Artifacts ...actually, looking at it, there really are a LOT of bleh angels. Would be a long list. Very interesting.

Sustaining Spirit is my Lurrus deck's secret weapon. There are some decks that just can't win against a board with lurrus, mother of runes, and sustaining spirit

I'm collecting almost all the angels, sadly there are tons of bad ones :/ even that, none of them have activated abiliti s (with tap?) to gain life, draw or add mana. At least Inspiring Observer and Angel of Condemnation form a nice synergy Sadly, voice of all neither has a flavor text nor have protection from all colors (you just choose one on ETB) Voice of province should have brought more tokens if different types, like a goblin for red, an elf for green and a cephalid for blue. But 5 bodies would be busted A "worst T creatures that are rare or mythic" would be interesting

There are some niche strategies that could want haunted angel. If you want a Goad deck, but no one in your play group plays creature based decks.

Haunted angel, koll the forge master, mob rule, reiterate, brass's bounty, lightning greaves or, grafted wargear, ashnods altar,or the alter of dementia. These cards work well with her. Got to do a f ton but. There is something you can do.

I just ordered a bunch of angels for the jankiest EDH angel deck i could ever make and haunted angel would have been an amazing addition. Didn't even know it was a card! I'll have to locate one. Think the average CMC of the deck is like 7 or 8. Literally just all angels cuz they neat. Haunted Angel would fit right into it haha

It was interesting that even the really bad angels you mention in this video are probably not as bad as most of the other cards you mention in similar videos. This video seems to be praise for angels as a whole in that sense.

Angles, my favourite creature type since the days in the late 90s when I could use them to prove to my granny that MtG was not a Satanic game and my cards should not be thrown in the garbage for that. And thier bright side is that usually, even when they are bad as gamepieces, more often than not the art on the card is still nice.

The token angel that flew out with Geist of Saint Traft is my personal least favorite one. That is the only card in the entirety of the original Innistrad block that I truly fucking hate and if it had been a speck less invincible that entire fucking year of MtG would be perfect to me

honestly paragon of modernity felt alright in sealed for snc since you kind of need flyers as a hedge against someone opening a good obscura pool and there is a lot less removal and aggression in sealed typically and it deals with stalemates pretty effectively obviously still like your 23rd card but it definitely filled a role in draft its just too slow though

It is mostly the vanilla ones that are horrible. Angel fire is fine.

@@NizzahonMagic Better than the vanilla ones, but I wouldn't call him fine. A french vanilla 4/4 for 7 mana is not fine, even with the slight modality he offers, since 90% of the time he'll just be a 4/4 flier for 7 mana. Rampage 3 does give him synergy with lure effects and since he does not have flying by default he's better at it than Teeka's Dragon I guess.

I dunno about #1. I think giving your opponents free creatures is worse than having relatively low power / toughness.

Normally I'd say you're right, but there might at least be some edge cases where the Haunted Angel is mildly useful if you combo with it because it has such a unique effect. By contrast there's really no scenario where Infuriating Angel is the optimal card you could have played.

I wonder if all those below rate flyers from old sets fared in their respective limited formats. Lately LSV did a flashback invasion blokc drat and creatures he put in his deck were terrible. Maybe from that perspective a 3/4 flying vigilance for 4 with echo was an acceptable card.

I personally expected Dawning angel on the list, it was in the starter deck that i got myself when i started playing and even as a newbie and huge fan of angels, a 5 mana 3/2 flying that gains you four life was utterly disappointing. Having your five mana Angel be unable to block a 2 mana Goblin and survive is just sad.

Haunted angel has one use in commander. Play a "group hug" deck with no thought to taking greater advantage than what it gives your opponents. Like making infinite mana for Phelddagrif and Questing Phelddagrif

I feel like Nizza gauges a lot of these cards against today's standards. In the day of sealed and drafting, Herald was a bomb, Sustaining a bomb, even Angel of Fury. Not great removal, weak tricks - flying was always strong, and Sustaining would often give you a couple turns of "I attack you, and don't care if you attack me". And can't tell you how many times you'd sideboard a pro Angel against a certain deck and shut their offense down.

I think number 2 has the most potential to be playable out of the whole list. There are plenty of startgies in EDH that gain benefit from giving your opponents more creatures. GOAD and Pillowfort decks that want your opponents to KO each other while you build up.

If we are comparing older Angels compared to the ones from today, then yes, they are pretty horrible But, for the time that they were printed some of them we're not we're not all that bad.

Yeah, but group hug decks aren't about losing. A group hug deck would rather play something like Hunted Dragon than this Angel, since playing the card gives your opponent(s) something.

Why would there be? There are no mono-green demons or sphinxes either, but again, I wouldn't expect there to be any.

it might be helpful to change how you report the 17 lands win rate - instead of saying "paragon of modernity has a 51.7% winrate, in a format where the overall winrate was 55.3%," you could say "paragon of modernity has a -3.6% below overall winrate." its more intuitive for listeners to see how bad the card is when framed like that, instead of looking at 51.7%, which wins more than half the time.
