In 2008, Seattle native Jay Park debuted with K-pop boy group 2PM, which led to a successful solo career in Korea. Ten years later, the rapper-singer signed to Roc Nation as the hip-hop label’s first Asian-American artist. With the U.S. now in his sights, Jay Park is fighting to become the first Asian-American hip-hop mogul. Catch new episodes of ‘Homecoming’ Mondays on KZfaq.

I wouldn't blame Jay Park though because when the comments resurfaced they basically kicked him out (OF KOREA!) without wanting to understand and/or accept that a culture shock can be hard on a kid. and a lot of kpop artists who were brought outside of Korea automatically have haters. Many koreans view any one who leave Korea for a better life is looked at as a traitor. In addition to that, the haters Jay park had literally had to DIG for the comments which is from YEARS ago. Also, no one gave him support. his label and group members kind of dropped him. The neitzens are crazy.

Honestly, it will be hard for him to make it as a real hip hop artist in America. The standard of hip hop is way different. I am not sure if the music he puts out stands out against all the other hip hop out there. His music to me sounds a bit generic. As a rapper, his flow and lyrical content is just okay. You cannot have a generic flow and a generic production. His singing is way better than his rap. I feel if he marked the RnB side more than the hip hop side he would have more success. He also has to get from under the Roc Nation label. If he wants to sign with a major label, he needs to sign with one that actually cares about proper promotion of his work.
@Angela-yg6bk
@Angela-yg6bk 5 жыл бұрын
kickrockspleze Yeah I already know it's hard for Jay and other Asian American rappers to make it as a hip hop artist in America. Which is sad because there are so many talented Asian rappers out there that are being slept on. Even though it may seem impossible to others, eventually we'll see more Asian rappers on tv and hear them on radio stations, it's inevitable. I get why his sound may seem generic to a percentage of Americans, the autotune and the production sound similar to what is already being heard out here in America. I disagree with your opinion on his on his flow and lyrical content but you're entitled to your own opinion. I think Jay is an amazing rapper and he does it so well and the fact that he's not a mumbling his way through a beat already set him apart from the mumble rappers that I hear on the radio and see on tv. I'm a fan of rappers like 2 Pac, Nas, Missy Elliott, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Young MA, and Fatboy SSE; so automatically I'm a fan of Jay Park's work both his Korean and American music. Nothing against mumble rappers, it's just I prefer a lyrical rapper instead. I 100% agree with you on the label and on the promotional part. A proper way about promoting his music is also a factor. We'll see what Roc Nation does for Jay in 2019.
@eastzilla4282
@eastzilla4282 5 жыл бұрын
@@Angela-yg6bk But then how can you not recognize that his music isn't popular among MOST Americans. He fans and followers are only people who enjoy kpop music. If his music wasn't generic then it would have more plays on the radio. His interview with Ebro was awkward, yes, but it should've been a wake up call to Jay. He's a Kpop star trying to cross over in America. It's known fact that Korean music emulates (copies) western music. No offense to Jay but even his image- notice how he's trying to copy western styles in fashion. He just needs to be more authentic to himself instead of trying to fit in. Nobody likes a try hard- especially in America. By the way, I'm a Korean/ American working under the Sony RED branch here in NYC- I used to work under JYP Ent and left because I saw how much Korean music copies American music. If Asian artists want respect they have to earn it, not by trend following...

It's interesting that he was in 2pm for like a year and he's still associated with them... Quite honestly they have been apart for so long and both have reached their own successes. After Jay's departure we see what he has accomplished with AOMG, H1GHER, and Roc Nation. For 2pm they have their own projects and more popular in Japan really. But this is just my opinion, if Jay hadn't left he would have been so restricted in 2pm. All the 2pm guys have creative control for their japanese albums whereas the Korean albums as a group are tightly controlled and have to pass all the executives. I like that Jay thinks of it as a learning experience because at the end it's not that it was a horrible experience for him. It made him stronger and gave him exposure. And it's awesome to see that while he's still growing as an artist, he's giving opportunities to other artists to do what they want to do. So to all the people even if you don't like his music, just know that he's really a true leader at the end of the day. I wish to see him succeed!!
@kickrockspleze
@kickrockspleze 5 жыл бұрын
I think for the most part, he will forever be associated with 2PM because that is how he got his start. His fan base started there, and if it wasn't for that, I doubt he would be where he is today. I am not saying that he isn't talented, but it was through 2PM that he was introduced to the music world and even when he the group parted ways, he left with the fan base he built as the leader of 2PM.

@NaNgNg0 5 жыл бұрын
@@Nanu-bh6mm that's what I had said they have creative control over their solo projects but as a group its been a bit restrictive in some ways. They have said this in many interviews before and that they hope to have the ropes loosen. I was hoping to see something before they all enlist but of course that didn't happen.

@@NaNgNg0 They've had PROMISE (I'LL BE) which was written and produced by Taec, as their title track for their last album before enlistment. They've also been writing songs for at least two albums before that. In fact, Jun. K made MY HOUSE for their 2015 album title track. Let's see though when they'll have a full group Korean comeback.

love this series and hearing his perspective. As a fan of kpop, I'm familiar with 2pm and Jay Park (I didn't really listen to their music) but now I learned more about him and he's really cool and intelligent (idk he speaks really eloquent). I honestly don't know how these trainees are functioning with their amount of effort/hardwork and lack of sleep.

It's crazy it was just yesterday I remember the drama around 2pm and jpark. I can still remember when I still had myspace and watched that video jpark made about the issue and how he will change for his future. man oh man has time past. im so old. LUL, jay helped so many artist get recognized. especially the underground asian musicians...

Having grown up on K-pop, it's really been so crazy to watch him go from a cute boyband member to this super successful hip-hop artist that's so highly respected. He's improved in his craft so much over the years and as a fan I'm so proud! Can't wait to see where he goes in the future

Ive heard his story so many times but still i feel as amazes as i heard him talking abt his story first time . Look at him now where he is . N he did with all his hardwork . I'm so proud n happy for him . N yet he still so humble . N not to be that person as Chacha said "he was juz too good to be in a group" . When i become a fan of jay or started listening to his music i didnt know he was frm a bg .
