The fighting concept of Muay Boran has always been the same from its development centuries ago: to take the fight where it needs to go. Ironically, this timeless concept is as applicable today as it was back then.
In many ways, any traditional Martial Arts system can loose it original intent. But if we practice the lessons in a practical manner while integrating it with modern standards, then Muay Boran can, not only work, but thrive in today's fighting environment.

I don't know if it is right or wrong. I practice Lethwei. My Lethwei trainer once told me that all martial arts came from India. Indian Gurus created martial arts and a Shonglin monk who studied in India went to China and started different varieties of Kung Fu inspired by animals. From China and India, all SEA countries developed their own martial arts. I'm a guy from Myanmar. In our history books, SEA countries got their martial arts from others as diplomacy gifts. Another one is that a prince from one kingdom went to other kingdoms to study their war strategies, martial arts, literature, philosophy, etc. That's how most martial arts exchanged and developed themselves to protect or conquer other nations.

Honest Question: I have no Muay Thai or even a Kickboxing or boxing gym nearby for a good few hours over, I have had people tell me to simply train at home, but after viewing this video, I am understanding that I may not be able to train in a combative way, is this correct?

for combative training, it's always optimum to go to a school and train with experienced partners

In a way, yes. Sparring is essential for any martial art. However... I was the same place when I was in college. So what I do instead is at least train the form, and stamina, do cardio and up your atheletism, you already 50% of the way. Then when you got a chance to join a gym, you can focus on the technique and sparring experience.

There are about 20 majour Muay Boran stiles. All completely different from each other, like Muay Chaiya, a kind of "more brutal Aikido" and then Muay Plam, the kind of "more brutal Grappling/BJJ" or Muay Korat which is a traditional hard striking and kicking art with very high focus on different hooks and elbows. Every Muay Boran is different. So: about which are you talking. Most of the guys in modern gear did not look like Muay fighters. Looked more like "MMA bullshit" - a random set of techniques plugged from a random group of martial arts :P

For those who spend so much effort to label and categorize systems, don’t really understand what it takes to be an effective martial artist. If you look at any style and can’t tell the foundation, then it will just appear like a set of random movements with no purpose. Never mind that sparring is chaotic in itself or students are trying to put things together in sparring form. Techniques are not going to look textbook or perfect in any way. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Muay Boran encompasses all the ancient fighting systems. To define and restrict how we teach and learn is only going to limit one’s full potential. And those who insist on narrowing down a style are only interested in putting boundaries and pointing out the limits of each individual system. But we’re not here to be placed into a box for critics to define what we can and cannot do. Muay Boran is more than techniques, it’s a concept of fighting without limitations. Those who are theorists will always debate with full time practitioners. In reality, the only thing that matters is what works.

Aside from elbows and knees, Muay Boran includes grabbing, rolling, takedowns as well as more striking variations than modern Muay Thai

ground skills are essential to becoming an even better striker. for even the very best fighters can end up on the ground at any given moment

It's pointless to discuss about muay boran unless you speak of a specific lineage. More or better known muay boran styles are Muay Korat, Muaythai Lopburi, Muay TaSao, Muay Chaiya and Muay of Department of Physical Education, which is the modern sport muaythai. Each style is distinctly different from each other. You cannot conglomerate or bundle these styles. Incidentally, Boran is Ancient = Obsolete.

We can and we will. What’s pointless is thinking that fighting is linear, when in fact, fighting is dynamic. In ancient days, the term Muay Boran did not exist and fighting skills were simply called “Muay”. Muay Boran is a generic term that encompasses all the ancient fighting systems. And the mindset of fighting in general, be it back then or in today’s environment is to use what works. Imagine telling fighters of any style that they cannot add or discuss spinning back elbows because it’s only for Muay Boran stylists. It’s absurd to think that any one style will be enough to handle all fighting scenarios. In the real world, you can’t argue your way out of a fight. You can only use skills you are confident in regardless of which style it is. Muay Boran is alive and well for those who constantly train and test it, not for those who simply research and theorize all day. What’s obsolete is your argument. Fighters and dedicated martial artists know exactly what I’m talking about because “Game recognize Game”.
