When I first imagined Mucca Pazza at the Tiny Desk, I honestly had no idea how the Chicago band's 23 members would fit in - in the literal sense of the term. To load-test this performance, we actually gathered a gaggle of interns behind my desk and began to stack people on cabinets, step-stools and, of course, desks.
In nearly seven years of doing Tiny Desk Concerts, with more than 400 participating acts, this turned out to be the biggest one yet. It was also one of the most fun, with Mucca Pazza performing songs from its album L.Y.A. using trombones, saxophones, trumpets, woodwinds, violin, electric mandolin, accordion, cello, guitar, sousaphone, a big bass drum, percussion instruments and more. Then there were the cheerleaders.
I first heard this giant performance-art marching band at globalFEST 2013, and Mucca Pazza's mix of cacophony, symphony and crazed frolic makes it a large, lovable renegade. The band just celebrated its first 10 years together, so if you missed the first decade, prepare to be a fan of the next. You may even be tempted to join this circus.-- BOB BOILEN

It was my last night in Chicago before I moved to New York to attend College, and I politely asked the Accordion player if she might sign my set list. She then proceeded to have everyone in the band to sign it. It's always a shining moment in my life.

I have watched a few dozen Tiny Desk concerts and this is clearly the most visually diverse and appealing one. Congrats to Mucca Pazza for creating such an eclectic mix of musicians, costumes and some good music.

The microphone setup is so minimalist, I wouldn't be surprised if the musicians themselves were "doing the mix on the fly". They seem very conscious of what every member is playing, and how they should fit in the overall sound :)

Ya don't know much about marching bands ;) It's probably just a single room mic or two plus the one clipped to the bell of the sousaphone (for bass). This style harkens to when bands had to play balanced without help from an engineer.

I happened upon Mucca Pazza at an outdoor concert about 5 years ago. I was mesmerized. It's as though the musical gods mixed equal parts Bela Bartok with Frank Zappa, folded in a Big Ten marching banded, and then dosed the audience with acid. : )

Johnathan Smith It's not so much the technical skill. Sure you could give an orchestra the score and they could play it. The thing that makes this group special is the frenetic and casual attitude and approach that gives birth to the music.

@DaroffApFire

Johnathan Smith What makes this much more wonderful is that this group of musicians shows a clear passion for their art. Sure, an orchestra could play this, but with how much depth? How much passion do you think an orchestra has reading from sheet music? This group isn't about being calculated and precise. This, is real music. Something that comes from the mind, full of emotion and feeling. If you can't understand that, then you don't understand music.

You know, I've got to say. I kept telling myself, stop watching this, you don't really listen to this kind of music, you aren't into the horns really, or this kind of comedy, but I COULDN"T LOOK AWAY!!! In all honesty I quite enjoyed this performance, and the music was really catchy. Also brought a smile to my face. I don't know if this is something I'd ever buy, but I'd enjoy watching them at some kind of show in an amusement park, a parade, or likewise event.
