I will never stop using Moleskine notebooks for my journaling. 😃 It’s ok if people don’t like it, I love my Moleskines! Do I have other journals? Yes, lots, but I am always using at least one Moleskine and sometimes 2 at a time. But I don’t use fountain pens because they just aren’t my jam. I think they are gorgeous, but I don’t like them for myself. It’s kind of like how I have a zillion pens but I always use a Bic crystal. I’m ok being a weirdo in the journal community. 😂 Love your videos!

I use Moleskine with fountain pens in nib size F or EF and there's never been a problem for me there. I got them for cheap too, got lucky at a local Goodwill that had a few for 3$ each. I keep my art journaling in a mixed media Canson XL notebook and discovered that cheaper notebooks makes me more creative than the most luxurious ones. I struggle to finish (or even begin) notebooks I paid more for, and it's more important for me to use the products I buy than to accumulate them. I totally agree with you that using what works for us is the best course of action than using what is sold as "the best" because at the end of the day, what makes it the best is not what its made of but what we pour into it.

I’m always complaining about Moleskine paper quality, and yet I seem to fill them up so consistently. They are not worth full price but they’re often super discounted at places like TJ Maxx. I also have a ton of free ones from my old job at a bookstore that I keep going back to, like you! My favourite journals are Seawhite of Brighton, Paperblanks and Midori as well. Thanks for your lovely videos. Ps. I use almost exclusively fountain pens for drawing and journaling including my bullet journal, but a Preppy with plain Platinum Black is just fine in most notebooks including the Moleskine. Hope the haters stop pestering you!

My new obsession is actually the Leda sketchbook as a journal. It's 20$ it's cream pages, elastic, back pocket, blank...basically all the things you've said except it's paper is 120 gsm so it can handle a bit more mixed media. Even light watercolor does good in it Edit, I think it's only has 160 pages but it has an amazing crinkle❤ (where my crinkle lovers at?)

It is so wild that you feel the need to defend what notebooks you use. Very thankful that you share your thoughts on different options. ❤ I used to love Moleskine in the past but switched to Leuchtturm and Hobonichi once I started with fountain pens. However, when the 400 p. Molskine came out - I got one with the intention of brain dumping into it. It’s something very compelling about that particular one! Haven’t gotten around to it yet but after seeing this I’m thinking it will be a perfect work companion instead. Almost never use fountain pens at work so I will try that! Great video!! 🎉

Great video! I use moleskine notebooks for lots of things, both the expanded and the cahier. They are readily available and work well. I use Leuchtturm for bulletin journal and for morning pages. I use fountain pens for morning pages, lists, etc because it makes me happy. Rollerball for fast writing, gel pens for some art journaling. I do plan to try a Midori now that I know they offer b6 slim!

I greatly appreciate the reference with Chipotle that your coworker used for her diet. Reason why i state such a thing. I follow a similar diet to her but I do weigh under 100lbs... I do not recommend attempting to find out my diet since i do eat things that are seen to be unhealthy. I just manage the portions like your coworker did. Same situation with notebooks that are able to hold onto fountain pen ink. I am currently using a TJMaxx product that I purchased for $6... The paper is light but it still is "crunchy". The brand itself is "The Original Morris & Co" 192 pages. The only draw back to me is the dark bullet points. Nonetheless I am in love with this notebook. I use abnormally heavy fountain pen inks but it is beyond nice to use this notebook. Ok... I am going to vanish and continue watching your amazing informative videos. 💕

I need to shout out Kinbor. You'll never guess what is sitting on my desk, blank..... my hobonichi weeks mega. The analysis paralysis is winning. But my $7 Kinbor weeks that I almost slept on holds all of my actual planning. Kinbor has different sizes, different designs such as Sanrio, etc.. They have a white tomoe river paper. To your point about art journalers using fountain pens, we're out there, but it's more likely we're using dip pens for drawing. And a lot of times when I do see other artists using fountain pens for drawing, it's usually because it's a practical on the go solution for quick sketching that's close to a nib, but dip pen nibs are for achieving certain effects and finish as they're more flexible than fountain pen nibs! Like, it wouldn't be the first kind of pen i'd personally reach for, and even then the inks used are often not water resistant! But you are right about preferences. I have all different types of notebooks and the different types of tools that are best compatible for them. I'm not using my fountain pens or inkier tools in my moleskines, that's not what they're for. I like the form factor of moleskines and the way they bulk up over time with writing/art. If I was in the mood to use my fountain pens I reach for something else. Excellent video! I love the seven seas and Midori is a staple for me.

we all get into a rut when were testing out new products. i feel like i hit a stride when i finally found the regular tried and tested economical notebook for myself! i was searching for a graph paper, folds back on itself and can be somewhat compact notebook. i like the AHGXG notebooks on amazon. this way i dont get distracted & overwhelmed at the store lol i normally dont like spiral bound bc i feel like i wreck the wires after prolonged use but this one is firm double wirebound and holds up the whole time. plus i love the clear covers bc i usually cut up cards i get from framily and use them as covers (or even postcards or whatever memorabilia) bc it makes my heart just smile. its also professional looking so i use the same one for work but usually add a sticker to the cover instead of a card i cut up. for my purse slash grocery list notebook, i used pocket hard cover lined notebooks from daiso for a while then switched this year to a moleskin softcover pocket.... i love it bc it's a mini planner too so I can reference dates w/out looking at my phone. happy journaling to us all =)

I have a soft spot for Moleskines; I kept a pocket while doing a lot of traveling when I was younger and I loved it so much. I'm a big advocate of trying out lots of different brands, big or not, and really don't like how gate-keepy the journalling community has gotten. Some of my favourite journalling has happened in euro store books with whatever random ballpoint I could find. I adore Midori and always try to chuck in a fresh book whenever picking up inks. I prefer cream paper as well, it's so much softer on the eyes! I definitely feel the same way about Moleskine being a kind of a workhorse journal - chuck it in a backpack with any old pen and you're good to go. ✌️

Platinum Carbon inks work perfectly in Moleskine (fine nib). Iroshizuku's too. So you can find inks that work great with Moleskine. I would actually say that archival and other permanent inks work better in Moleskine than in fountain pen friendly notebooks. I love Moleskine for my writing. Carbon Black Forest is perfect for Moleskine.

I have a Moleskine Expanded that I enjoy for Bible study. It’s perfect for deep note taking and I don’t have to be precious about the space. Maybe because I use mainly Fine and Extra Fine nibs, I don’t have any issues with fountain pen ink on the Moleskine paper. It works just fine for me. But my current favorite paper for note taking and sketching with ink and colored pencil is the Midori MD Cotton paper. I use an A5 pad for notes, and I sketch in the F0 size notebook. The MD Cotton paper is fantastic, and I enjoy using it far more than Tomoe River paper. It has a slight tooth which makes it the best paper I’ve ever used for colored pencil. Even cheap pencils perform well on it. My one gripe is the unconventional sizing for the notebooks. The MD Cotton paper used to come in A sizes, but Midori decided to get fancy and changed to F sizing, which is based on the golden ratio. This allowed them to lean into marketing this paper to pencil artists. I wish they’d reconsider since my preferred journal size is A6 and no one even makes covers in the F sizes. F0 is almost a B6, so I have my MD Cotton sketchbook in a B6 Chic Sparrow TN cover. The cover is a hair too small, but it will have to suffice. Nevertheless, I enjoy using the Midori MD cream paper in an A6 blank, and this is my preferred notebook for journaling, even though the regular MD paper is smoother and doesn’t accept colored pencil quite as well as the cotton variant. Ahhh preferences and limitations!

I have gone that route and GOD has made my pallet to like the cheap wines. A notebook I like to use is the Hobonichi Techo Accessories grid Notebook (A6) 240 pages and also the STALOGY 365 Days Note A6 365 pages. I have a love-hate relationship with Moleskines because (in MY experience, YMMV of course), their QC can be hit-or-miss. Not just with fountain pens but overall quality control--ribbon bookmarks fraying or coming loose, pages coming out, etc. But if they work for you and you like them, then who cares? And I still go back to them a lot. TY for the video!

I use Moleskine expanded version journals and enjoy them, but only for "rough" or draft work. For "final" work, or writing with fountain pens I love Leuchtturm 1917, also because they offer A5, which is my preferred format. It's just as pricey as Moleskine, but the paper quality is much better, and it has several other useful features included, such as double ribbons, useful stickers for labelling and marking the journal, and a "Contents" section. They are fairly easy to get hold of in retail outlets and come in many varied, attractive colours. Waterstones in York UK has started stocking them and if you use their loyalty card to spend on books you can buy Leuchtturms for very reasonable prices.

Daler rowney makes the best pocket journals. All their paper is fountain pen, watercolor, oil pastel, chalk pastel, acrylic and oil paint friendly. They cost $4.99 and are ten times as good as moleskin. They are sold at Walmart.

I still use the Moleskine Expanded but a lot less now, filling just one a year but that's because the last couple of years I've been using the Leuchtturm 120gsm. It is my holy grail now and I fill around 4 a year. The paper is still off-white, rounded corners, page numbers (even on the plain), it has 7 colour covers now. Nothing shows through, I can paint, write, use anything (except alcohol markers of course). It's A5 and deliciously chunky. Hope you try it one day.

I'm heavy on the fountain pens and really wish I could use Moleskine notebooks. These looks so amazing, especially with that cover, and I feel the pull when I have seen a few of your videos! I've become a true paper snob, but honestly it can be quite overwhelming. However I am not yet ready to pull out the one pen and one notebook woman that yells inside of me. Not yet. Maybe someday. If that day comes I will remember you and your beautiful Moleskines 🫶🏼

I carry a 3.5x5.5 leather cover with 2-3 inserts every day. It's just easier as a man with pockets instead of a purse/bag. I only use fountain pens and carry a space pen for signatures on heat transfer paper. Anyway I've found over the years that clairfontaine and rhodia are the same company / same paper. So if you can't find your clairfontaine you like, see if you can find a rhodia! I also tried to get down with field notes but that paper is so poor. I typically keep a 3.5x5.5 clairfontaine staplebound lined book for daily tasks and notes (I think it's almost 100 pages or more) and then 2 thinner tomoe river inserts from either galen or goulet in dot grid and blank for mind maps, sketches, large single topic notations etc. Keep on writing!

Really good recommendations! One that I haven’t seen anyone show, maybe they aren’t that common, but the brand is Bindeworks- made in Germany, I think they are my favorite- the paper is nice( I love fountain pens) and the binding- the binding is incredible, it can handle it when you stuff your journal with collage materials and extra papers/ they hold up better than any journal I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried many. Probably have 60+ filled journals over the years. You can google the brand and there are some local sellers who carry the brand

I agree we all have our preferences! also use moleskines and I use fountain pens I don’t care if they bleed through because most of the time I use gel or roller pens! I just prefer the slim size and the weight of the notebook over the size and weight of the Leuchtturm 🤷‍♀️ Also it’s funny I did the chipotle thing also! I went down sizes just eating there 😆

Pen & Gear notebooks are working great with all my various fountain & gel pens. I have seen other fountain pen channels rave about them, too. Apparently, it matters where the paper is manufactured. If it's Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and other places whose cultural is that if pen aficionados, then the paper is done right. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Something like this. I believe it was Doodlebud who reviewed budget paper alternatives.

I use the Midori page a day everyday, and a pocket Sterling ink with 500+pages daily (has trp) love those two. I work at a restaurant and take orders on a pen and gear spiral. I have a bajillion pens, but don’t like ballpoint or rollerball much…if a notebook has bleed through, I will not use back pages, it satisfies for me.

CVS Caliber notebooks are pretty fountain pen friendly as well. (sometimes you'll get a non-fountain pen-friendly batch, but I've had a lot of luck with them) I use them as my I-don't-care-what-it-looks-like ink explorations. I'll probably use it to start my morning pages project since it's so cheap and it's not meant for anyone else's eyes. There's usually coupons you can use at CVS to make the already cheap notebooks even cheaper

I mostly use Rhodia and Claire Fontaine. I have a couple of notebooks with Tomoe River paper; it beautifully shows up the sheen of inks but is too thin for journaling with a fountain pen unless you only use one side per sheet. It would be great if you mentioned the paper's weight (gsm) if you know it. Thanks for sharing other books I've never seen. Now I can try a few others. 🙂👍
