As we roll into February I have many more trips planned. But as a lot of places are closed / too muddy to visit in January I've had to reach a bit into the archives for this weeks video.
Back when I visited Wenlocl Priory ( • WENLOCK PRIORY: Peacef... ) I also took some time to go visit the actual village of Much Wenlock. A delightlfully quaint little village with a little museum and a surprising past.
It turns out that Much Wenlock has a hand in bringing back the Olympic Games. In 1850 the Dr William Penny Brooks setup an Olympian class to promote the "Moral, Physical and intellectual improvement of the town." This led to the first games being held on 22-23 of October 1850. These continued on a regular basis until his death in 1895 and then intermittently aftert that.
One of the key visitors to the games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Who, after being inspired by the Wenlock games, went on to form the International Olympic Commitie (IOC) who are the runners of the current Olympic games. To honour this, one of the Mascots at the 2012 London Olympic games was named Wenlock.
The town itself lies very close to Telford. Public transport is available to get here but it's Bus only. Due to it's location it lends itself well to side visit while also going to Iron Bridge and it's assorted museums or Benthall Hall ( • BENTHALL HALL: Visit t... )
