I freakin love the belt stop mod! I'm going to steal that for my craftsman offroader! I'm also considering changing my engine pulley but I don't want a lot more speed so I will be interested to see how much increase you got on the top speed. Great vid and keep them comin.

You are getting this tractor dialed in. As for the governor, anything over 4200-4500 rpm (depending on the specific Briggs flathead) will cause valve float which can wreak havoc on the exhaust valve plus the significant power loss resulting from the valves bouncing due to lack of spring pressure. shimming the stock valve springs or replacing with stiffer (racing mower) springs is an easy fix. NEVER run a stock flywheel over five grand or it will grenade on you. If increasing spring pressure, a zinc oil additive or racing oil (high zinc content) is a must. The belt stop is a great idea.

I've adjusted the governor on my tractor. You got to be careful, I did it to a 13 hp kohler, and after a few times running it at the highest adjustment, it developed a tick. I went to messing with it and it's a push rod tick. it goes away once it fully warms up but the engine has permanent damage.
@WeldstarCreations
@WeldstarCreations 10 жыл бұрын
To supplement my previous post, perhaps you may consider installing double valve springs and camshaft (212 alt.) from Precision Cams directly, EC Distributing, or some webstore that sells racing mower parts. Since the performance camshaft is reduced radius, you will need to purchase a set of billet lifters. The camshaft will wake up your Briggs and raise the maximum torque from 2500 rpm to 4000 rpm along with a substantial torque increase. Adjust the governor to approx. 4000 - 4500 rpm or remove and install a rev limiter. Any higher revs and you have to spend a BUNDLE!! It would then be preferable to install an OHV single.

The biggest concern safety wise when you exceed governor speed is flywheel explosions. If a rod breaks you get a hole in the block and a screwed engine. If the flywheel lets go you have a hand grenade. You might want to make a steel plate as a scatter shield around it

Ya it's weird because it's just a spring idler on it that keeps the belt tensioned it just has a break pedal on it so it will be tough but I might have a plan but because the hydro can have the input pully spun without doing anywhere there is no need for a clutch because the pump pistons u could say are completely flat not moving any fluid
@JSW793
@JSW793 10 жыл бұрын
Just what I thought, It sounds so much better in neutral now. I didn't think about the idler pulleys causing the noise though. Glad you actually reused the sleeve too, that's what I plan to do when I get a chance to do a pulley swap on my craftsman. That's been on the back burner forever though.. Oh yeah, and I'd love to see that stuff, sometimes I get a lot of nice ideas from your tech vids. Really any videos are good to see coming from you, seeing as you don't seem to have as much time for it lately.

I dunno about faster, but it seemed a little more...meatier?!?...i dunno, maybe it's just me. I compared it to previous videos and it looks to me as you're getting a little bit more umpf for the kick. Maybe it's because of the snow, it makes it hard to gauge thing properly. Cool fix, cool belt (blue is my favorite color after all) and here's hoping that the belt choke you made works in the future as well. If it were me i'd weld a little lip and sand the surface smooth. That surely would prolong the life of the belt.

Hi Fearless. Playing with your governor may be dangerous. Check out Brian Millers pulling website. There is a section on small engine flywheels. They WILL come apart at high rpm's.Check them for cracks too . I love your diesel. Keep the video's coming and be safe.
@Fearlessfront
@Fearlessfront 10 жыл бұрын
yeah, I know all about that stuff. I have a modded gx200 as well. I did leave the governor in place, I just adjusted it a little bit. Also this motor was put together by me, and the FW was never struck with a hammer, so it shouldn't be cracked. And I put a piston, and connecting rod from an ohv briggs in it as well so hopefully it doesn't blow. But If it does, I have another one waiting to go into it.
@loisbob
@loisbob 10 жыл бұрын
Fearlessfront Yeah you do a good job.Only thing to watch is over torquing with an inpact driver.Your on a tapered shaft and getting overzealous will crack them. Your good for 4 grand with a cast flywheel,more than that go with steel.We garden tractor pull and we're putting a Kubota 3cyl in a cub cadet this year.Stay warm bro !

nice sounds good. my question is why did you put a 5 inch on the transmission? when i got my craftsman i had i put a 2 inch on the transmission and a 6 on motor was a crazy lil tractor. but did a great job on that
@Fearlessfront
@Fearlessfront 10 жыл бұрын
because I drive through a lot of mud and water, so a 2" would slip, whereas the 5" has more surface area for the belt to grab the pulley

Awsome Test Ride. Don't rev engine too high for too long. Those motors have aluminum piston rods which have time limits on high revs, which means when your short amount of time is up you need to replace the aluminum piston rod before it breaks. Just some advice. Still awsome video.
@Fearlessfront
@Fearlessfront 10 жыл бұрын
I actually built this motor myself with ohv parts. It cost me less than $75 for the whole build, including the barley used I/C engine block. it should be a little tougher than a normal flathead, but if it does blow, I have an ohv I could swap into it in about an hour. I didn't get really aggressive with the governor settings, just a few hundred extra RPM's is all. It makes it more fun knowing it could come unraveled! haha
