This Video was shot in June of 2017, I believe I was the first person to install a V-Twin on the this frame setup, Anyways shorty after this video the chain came apart with about 5 hours of run time and let the boat sit for about 8 months (busy with other projects) I have since replaced the sprockets and chain with a 30mm cog belt and pulley setup, The gearing is now 1- 1.143 and the boat has much better hole shot and the 9.5 prop is spinning 4500 plus rpm (valves floating at 4600 ) running 24mph up river and 26 down at 4300RPM, Currently waiting for stiffer valve springs and a bigger prop, more updates to come…
Update, I installed the bigger prop to get the RPM's down that worked but then It smoked a bearing and destroyed the drive shaft, There are three bearing in the lower unit on the driveshaft to the prop no seals and several ways for water to get in... all the bearing are junk after about 7 hours of run time... Now I'm in the process of making a new driveshaft switching to better bearings and try to seal the lower unit from water... If I can figure out how keep the water out maybe it will last a while?

You need smaller sprocket on bottom to increase rpm on prop.

Make an access port up close to the top for the chain put chain wax on when you do do chain change get an o-ring chain they are o-ring sealed in the links and pre-greased so all you have to do spray chain wax every once in awhile to keep the outside of the chain from rusting it can go right into the water then

good call... way more torque with the twin, With the governor removed, good exhaust and carb (china pwk 38mm works good for $35.)is about 10hp easy... add stiffer valve springs and run it between 4500-5000 rpm it will rip and carry a lot of weight, I have run this motor on golf carts and plan on installing one of the vertical shaft units on a outboard lower unit, help a friend do that with a 25hp Kohler and its working out well...

Modern longtail mounts are not as good as the old-style ones invented and used here in Thailand 20-30 years ago. you need to balance the engine so it runs hands-off. I still use the old mount, it's a completely different experience,. I'm gonna try that seat up though looks cool see my channel to get a better idea of what I am saying.

Dave, it looks like you have had some issues with the mud skipper .I'm looking into a surface drive kit and was planning on the 670 predator. Based on your experience would what would you think one would work and last like in stock kit form and stock motor on a 1648 semi mod v rivited low jon boat.O dont need a lot of speed just would like to get into the skinny water which is mostly hard bottom and not too much mud.

Wouldn't you want a bigger gear on the engine's shaft and a smaller gear on the prop's shaft to get more speed out of it? Or are you saying that you want more engine rpm? Nice work, looks good

Hi Steve, with the stock gearing 1-1 it would only turn 3600 with the 9.5 prop and the hole shot was very slow, much better now with the reduction, better hole and increased mph

If you hit anything, it doesn't look like it could kick the motor up very much

not a lot but enough... When the handle hits the deck the bottom of the skeg is about 2 inches above the bottom of the hull...

Hello. I have the twister with the 22hp on it with a 10 inch 3 bladed prop and it's a bear to steer. Was it easier to steer with the smaller prop? Don't really care about speed it's a workout to steer

yes, the bigger the prop the more torque steer you feel on the tiller handle

Looking into getting the same thing you have did water get in the lower unit and how did the chain hold up before you swamp it out

The chain came apart with about 5 hours of run time, Don't waste your money on this setup. I would look into a Mud Walker or Copperhead if you’re wanting a simple surface drive. Also an outboard with a hydraulic jack plate works very well.

It’s in pieces in the garage… I now run a 1979 OMC 70hp 3 cylinder outboard on a Bob’s hyd. Jack plate, The boat rips! Bye bye lawn mower engine… Governor removal can be found here on you tube if you search for it… if you cant find it for a Predator Briggs v-twin is about the same…

Hello, if you read all of my description above it pretty tells the story of this setup… I have not messed with it since I broke the drive shaft, The water has been up since May here so I have been running my outboard boats which are much more reliable and faster… once the dry season comes maybe I will look into fixing this unit or junk it and build something else… The Predator has been a great motor for me with about 100 hours of hard use but the Mud Skipper drive system has proven to be pretty much a P.O.S. I would look into a Mud Walker or Copperhead if you’re wanting a simple surface drive…

Dave Pickrel , Do you wish you stayed with the Swamp Runner? Was looking at building SPS with the same Predator 22, and reading older threads and came across your KZfaq page. Now I see you tried the Mud Skipper, and the problems you have had with it.

The SPS is a very simple and reliable setup and I did have a lot of fun with it, the things I did not like about was it you run in real tight narrow creeks it’s hard to get turned around with a 15’ boat and a motor that’s sticking out 9’ off the transom, Also if you run a river that is narrow with a lot of tight turns its very hard to run on plane and steer quick enough to stay out of the trees this will also wear you out physically very quickly, I would guess that 80% people out there do not run the type of water I do so these issues are probably not a problem for them… Hope that helps!

I did a lot of research to figure out what pulleys and belt would fit, handle the power and change the gearing to something move favorable to my expectations, once that was completed I ordered the parts and the install was very simple, The only modification I had to make was to slightly grind down the edge of the larger of the two bearing retainers because it was slightly hitting the lower pulley adapter hub.

Completely surprised to see you wemt away from the SPS Swamp Runner longtail,.. and to a MudSkipper Kinda like going from a Toyota to a Dodge,.. YOUCH! Did you sell the genuine article? (The Original longtail setup) Thanks
