Video clip taken from 1971 interview - Muddy Waters - Honey Bee / Interview - 7/29/1971 - Ash Grove (Official). Here, Muddy talks about the authenticity of the Blues and how white kids in the 1960's started to imitate the Blues and could even play the Blues very well, but to sing the Blues, well Muddy tells it like it is. I first saw this clip on the Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars documentary, where Eric obviously agrees.

I still listen to Blues today.. I grew up on muddy, lil Walter, led belly, zz hill, bobby Blue bland, howlin wolf, Robert Johnson jus to name a few.. I low ride to blues music.. I love rap ( 99 and back) but I play rap at home and blues in my low rider.. some people be looking confused af when I roll by🤣 Some people get into it and start dancing to the music.. either way I love the reaction I get from the music🤣

It's sad that a legend has to give props to a young British band for introducing teens to his legendary music. The world is fucked up

He didn’t have to. Why is that so bad though? A lot of people don’t get credit for what they produce in their lifetime. Edgar Allan Poe died penniless and launched a whole genre of literature. Muddy Waters at least got to enjoy success.

The interviewer needs to listen to Muddy's own lyrics to understand: "I got a black cat bone, I got a mojo too, I got the John the Conqueroot I'mma *mess* witchoo" Same concept that explains Muddy's self-professed power over women describes the power of the blues over audiences of any color. And you know it's *him*. EVERYbody knows it's him.

Blues is exotic.Its deep.They're tired of "tin foil." The Caucasian young people want substance.A challenge to the heart not just the ears...That's the Blues wrapped up.Bad road but road that gets you somewhere real.😎

Another further example of what Muddy's talking about is Stevie Ray Vaughn. *Peerless* guitarist, and could play the pants off of Muddy, or anybody else, for that matter. But his vocals, although pretty good judged by themselves, couldn't get next to the blues soulfulness of a Muddy Waters or a Howlin' Wolf. That's just FACTS.

You're giving SRV to much credit. Muddy said Play More NOT BETTER.

@@spr95que42 No, I'm not giving SRV *too* much credit. Few could match the feeling or the skill in his playing. The man covered Hendrix songs (well!) on his albums, and if that doesn't take cojones, I don't know what does. The closest to SRV in the blues pantheon is Buddy Guy, and although I love his playing and showmanship, too, he couldn't hang with Stevie, either. Now, either of them could "outplay" Muddy, John Lee Hooker or any of his contemporaries on a physical skill level. But the old guys had that true Delta experience, and their *voices* couldn't be matched by ANYONE. That still applies today.

Very cool interview, it is interesting that fate would have Johnny Winter produce and play on I believe 3 of Muddy Waters’ Albums in the late 70’s and tour extensively , also in Muddy’s own band at that time if I’m correct was “steady rollin” Bob Margolin who was a fabulously natural blues player, but seeing some of the overrated and cringe blues artists of the 21st century I can understand how Muddy Felt that way.

Muddy Waters is one of the fathers of modern music yet this interviewer seems to think that anyone can do what Muddy Waters does. Absurd.

Incorrect - he knew what the answer was before he asked it. He wanted Muddy to make the point.

Look, the guy's from Norway. What does a Norwegian know about Mississippi or Chicago in the 1930s -1950s? The best evidence of that in the interview was when he asks Muddy at the end if his music has any political bent in it. If you know Muddy, you know that he never dealt in politics. You can see that Muddy didn't really understand the *question*, it was so far off the mark. Anyway, I don't think the interviewer underestimated Muddy's playing whatsoever.

@@rievans57 That may be true, but it's not uncommon for legends to have to endure "bad interviews". Comes with the territory.
