Ever wonder why Pokemon Emerald Speedrunners always pick Mudkip as their starter? The reason is exactly what you probably think. Gym matchups are easiest for Mudkip. But I thought it might be interesting to discuss alt routes for both Treecko and Torchic as well!
Thanks again to the PSR discord for all the help in entertaining my dumb questions about speedrunning. If you're curious, I think I'm planning on running these games at some point. Anyways. So, let me summarize: -Treecko is too hard to speedrun with because it loses very much time on third gym battle -Torchic loses time because it has to evolve before the first gym -Mudkip destroys 1st and 3rd gyms without preparing very much, so it's the best for speedruns.

As a Torchic main I always catch a Lotad and teach it Bullet Seed to fight Roxanne. But of course I am a game enjoyer, not a speedrunner

I personally find Torchic to be the cutest, but it gets butt-ugly once it evolves.

@@motherofallomelettes5380 a few of them can be pet. You just have to have or know somebody who has one that is exceptionally social and you take all the precautions you would take to touch a frog like wash your hands and wear a glove.

iv'e always loved using Mudkip as my starter in gen 3. i was a big fan of wooper and quagsire in gen 2, so to have a pokemon that gets the same water/ ground typing was a blessing

Also, sometimes you just have too much speed. Nidoking has 85, Feraligatr and Blastoise have 78, Empoleon has 60, Stoutland 80, Excadrill 88, Lucario 90 and I haven't watched the ones in 7th gen because gen 7 is boring to watch. In a Speedrun the most important factor is reliable power and coverage, which all but Blastoise have; speed is a nice bonus but you only need high enough so you out speed the enemy.

I thought he was the best because he learns water gun at like level 10 and can solo the rock gym. And he can learn ground moves which is good against the Electric gym. He can also solo the fire type gym. I’ve beaten at least 4-5 gyms with just mudkip

No brainer. Mudkip line has one weakness and is the games easy mode. Gets surf, ice beam, earthquake, and another filler move. That’s all you need.

I always use Treecko and yes Watson is always the hardest wall. Either you bring a Makuhita or you're DEAD *Or X Special but I don't use those

My guess on why Mudkip is the best before watching the video: It outperforms Treeko (well, duh), gym matchups are easier and itgives your opponent Treeko which can be taken down quicker and more consistently than Mudkip - which is why you don't choose Torchic. Generally I do think that Torchic is a decent choice too, though. More favorable matchups in the early to mid game provided you evolve it, but you'll have to rely on other mons lategame, which is probably where you lose a bunch of time as well.

well I guess it's easier to run a water starter than to try and manipulate for Hidden Power Water on a Fire Type. HP Fire on a WATER type on the other hand...I once had a Tentacruel with it, good coverage.

I always choose treeko because of its speed but I want to try something new and i decided to use Treeko in Pokemon Ruby , Torchick in Pokemon sapphire and Mudkip in Pokemon Emerald

Playing with Mudkip is playing that region on easy mode the hardest starter to Playing with blaziken is fucked because he is weak to almost half the gyms in the game

Blaze is weak to four. Roxanne (as a Torchick so it needs to grind to level 16). Wynona, Twins, and Wallace/Juan. With that said, I still think it’s more useful then Sceptile.

I don't need to see the video to safely tell the chat. Mudkip is the best. It's last form is the best. The memes is has are better. They legit made 1 to be box fodder and the other is a funky lizard with a fruit tree coming out of it's butt. Mudkip isn't just the best for gen 3. It's the only reasonable choice.
