This week we return to mudlark the Thames! Kate had an extraordinary day of finds! Over and over again she found amazing things! I also found a few choice objects (luckily as I forgot my glasses!)
The tide was very low and came in a little and then out again in quick succession (possibly something to do with all the storms and the Thames barrier) Come see what beautiful historic artifacts we found in places not often reached!
We have started a patreon page for anyone wishing to support us.
We also have a Ko-fi account, so if you wanted to support us by buying us a metaphorical cup of coffee it would be greatly appreciated xx

Amazing Thames finds for sure. 29 more days before I arrive in London. I have my Mudlarking License. I wish we could meet. This is a once in a lifetime trip for me. I can only pray to return someday. I saved for almost 3 years & had help from my subscribers, sons & boyfriend to make this trip possible

There is a glassmaker hut at the Jamestown Visitor’s Centre in Virginia where they make what are essentially shot glasses like they would use for hot rum. The glassmaker put two glass buttons on each side for you to hold the cup and not burn your fingers. You have a very good eye for spotting little treasures like these!

The bit of lead (first find) is a fired musket ball that struck a target. You can see the tiniest sprue from the molding. When a bullet leaves the gun it is tumbling at a great speed. The tumble causes riffling that would match the gun it was fired from. The markings that look like a pattern, are probably marks from the target, ie: impact on fabric or leather. Lead is very soft, as you know, and at that velocity it makes all the strange patterns and shapes. My husband and I metal detect wagon roads in Oregon, State USA. I enjoy finding something we call camp lead. Its the lead that would have fallen on the ground after smelting bullets during down time from traveling west during the 17-1800s. We also find barrel seals from containers of fresh water and food settlers would have carried to survive. Nice find! Thank you for sharing!

The tiny gate looking thing you found, your said it would have been good for a bird cage. But you could take an old clay pipe carve a n arched hole like a mini wood stove. Put a thin piece of stem out the top like a little chimney, and a top. The gate could be the front cover of the wood stove. Just a thought.

Remarkable first find Fleur, you must get a neck cord for your glasses! It's funny seeing you put back broken pipes, just shows how far you have come, consummate professionals now. We love the animation in Kate's face when she found the raspberry print, that's why we like a face on round up to see the delight in your faces when you discuss your finds. I wondering if the curved flint was for scraping meat from large bones, it certainly looks worked to me. Thanks for a great trip to the Thames.

Those nails were forged by hand by the Blacksmiths and they were so good at it they could make hundreds of them in a day and they usually had a punch with their initials or some sort of maker's mark thay could quickly hit them with while they were still hot. My Great Grandfather was a Blacksmith and the work he did was amazing, the skill that came from hammering hot metal every day for a lifetime was indeed beautiful to behold. I wish I could have met him when I was a bit older, he was a very kind and loving man, big and strong even when he was so aged and fragile, I bet he would have looked like a veritable ATLAS when he was in his prime! I love finding the handiwork of Blacksmiths, and I learned how to turn pottery on the wheel when I was very young so I also fall over myself when I see evidence of Pottery and the Thames is chock full of it, so much so that I'm positive I would spend every day down at the river at low tide just gawking at all the shards of pottery on the riverbank! You seriously have no idea how lucky you are to have access to such a wealth of Historical handiwork! I mean, you're finding shards of Roman pottery under your feet, and there's so much of it that you're spoiled for choice! To find a shard of ancient pottery here in North America is so rare that practically every find is saved and studied. I watched a video of some people who went out to a ranch and they actually found tiny hand made seed beads make out of bone and turquoise and they were definitely ancient and hand made because they were very irregular in shape and were so small that you almost needed a magnifying lense to see them, they could have dated back to far before European arrival in the Americas, you ladies would loose your minds at how small these things were! they must have been made by a very tiny hand indeed, and how they drilled through the stone to turn it into a bead in the first place is beyond me! That round piece of Lead you found looks like it has two R's back to back, it might be a seal.
