OLD FATHER THAMES

OLD FATHER THAMES

2 жыл бұрын

Come mudlarking and history hunting with London Mudlark Old Father Thames on the tidal River Thames.
Join me down on the foreshore as we search for historical treasure that unlocks London's rich history. From Prehistoric to medieval and modern, you never know what's going to turn up.
In this episode we are exploring the first Royal Dockyard, once known as The King's Dockyard.
Explore time and place in London's sunken corridor, seven metres below street level. We uncover secrets of the river, objects that have lain hidden for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
Be the first to find artefacts that remain untouched since they were first dropped or discarded!
So, without further ado, come Tide Travelling with me!

At 3:40 you found a little bobbin insulator, often used for low voltage lighting cables. Most likely, this will have been screwed through the hole on to a pier or wooden batten. They usually have "Made in England" on them.

My maternal family has been in North Carolina since the mid 1700's (North Carolina, though due south of Virginia, was not heavily populated as a English colony until that time...) - they were Tobacco farmers until up to 20 years ago, when the crop market changed... now it's cattle & soybeans... (My paternal family originated in Virginia in the late 1600's, then into Kentucky... all tobacco farmers until my father). I wonder sometimes if any of the tobacco grown by my great great gdad's made it into one of those bowls...
@OLDFATHERTHAMES
@OLDFATHERTHAMES 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dean! How fascinating, thank you for the history! That's fascinating, and I'm sure some of their tobacco almost certainly made its way to our shores and a pipe bowl? Perhaps even one that I've found! Thanks for watching, and for the info. Sorry for the slow reply, I'm just catching up. 🌊 ⚓

Hi, I'm over from Mark's channel. In the States with an interest in history and the London area. I'm going to venture a presumption that these items you discover washed up, out of the Thames where they were originally discarded. I also take it that some official permit is needed for your hobby ? Obviously you have been doing this for a while, but 30 years in the police and close protection compels me to say please be careful so you don't end up a victim of the Thames or some miscreant loitering about down there. And I hope you never find anything you don't want to have found.... Cheers !
@OLDFATHERTHAMES
@OLDFATHERTHAMES 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Barone! Great to see you over here. Was super fun taking Mark out. Items in the Thames are preserved in the anaerobic mud. The water erodes the surface and items are revealed. Yes, a permit is needed to search the foreshore in any way whatsoever. I have a three year permit, Mark used a one day permit - such a good thing that allows people to try out mudlarking to see what it's like. I take a lot of care while out on the foreshore, but you are right to suggest that it might not all be plain sailing! We have to keep our wits about us. Very best wishes, Old Father Thames. 🌊 ⚓
