Time is limited, so here's what I've got. During spring break, I was able to film this redesign of an old mugo pine bonsai. This first part discusses design choices along with the beginning stages of the work.
I have so many videos to share with you, and hopefully this summer I can edit them all. I have some very special videos to create from the North Carolina Arboretum that was taken during the spring break period as well. I can't wait to show Arthur Joura's amazing Radical Redesign program to you!
Soil Mixture: Sifted to 2-6 mm
3X Turface MVP
3X Pine Bark
2X Diatomaceous Earth
1X Sand

Someone once said, "In order to carve an elephant out of a block of marble, you simply cut away anything that doesn't look like an elephant". In bonsai, the reverse is true. We ''see'' the finished product and simply grow the tree to fill the form. This was a great video. Cheers, Dick from Vancouver.

It's good to see you back. I would probably take off the big lower branch and keep most of the rest - I see some nice, graceful movement in the vertical trunk. But I can't see it in person, and it's your tree. And I think whatever you choose will look great.

When I started and could afford it, I bought tree material from Lowe's & Home Depot, but my main spot was at Floyd County's Slaughters Nursery. They always had nice varieties of plants like junipers & maples.

Probably too late but you can split the upper straight part to help it bend. You don't get back budding on mugo?
@AppalachianBonsai
@AppalachianBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
You can get back budding on mugos, but that middle section between top & bottom has zero buds. I would have to regrow them for a decade before I could even begin work on them. Even though bonsai is a lifetime practice, how you spend that time is very important. I think you'll like the end result.

@AppalachianBonsai
@AppalachianBonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Essentially. Strip the bark, peel it away to give a natural look, carve if needed, then scorch it to remove the fine hairs of wood. If you want, you can also use lime-sulfur to bleach it, but where I live, it doesn't look natural. We're a very humid climate, not dry where bleaching looks more in tune with the natural surroundings.

It's usually to do with the species. If the tree is healthy you can prune them all off. They will grow back half the size.
