Larry Holmes was a great young and hungry boxer when he took on Ali, while Ali was already past his prime. It is clear with this interview though that Ali is already suffering from Parkinson's disease which could have not only affected his speech but his reflexes and coordination. He is already slurring words here and talking in fragments. With Ali deceased now, there is no point in going back and changing the record book but they should have looked into this when he was diagnosed. Holmes had a unfair advantage. RIP Ali

Well said bro! I will never understood why they let him boxe again. He had speech problem, thyroid problems, he couldn't see punches thrown to him... The only one who saw all this was Ferdie Pacheco who wanted to have nothing to do with being with Ali in his corner anymore.

Holmes was Heavyweight Champ and 1 month shy of 31 years old when he fought Ali. When you say Holmes was young and hungry makes it sound like he was 23 and fighting his way up !! He was the Champ and had already defended the Title 7 times.

Absolutely right. I said the same thing. His voice was noticeably weak and slurred. Yes he was a grown man that made his own decisions but it still shows you how some people review others as property or income. Dundee was the only one in his corner that seemed to put Ali's health above any other selfish reason.

He may have not been hit much in his prime but in his later career he took alot of powerful shots, Foreman in 74', Fraizer III in 75', Norton III in 76' and Shavers in 77' to name a few are fights that Ali took alot of shots, it's bound to take its toll on a fighter even if it is someone as good as Ali.
@vantheman1234
@vantheman1234 6 жыл бұрын
James Humbert Ali got hit all the time in the 70’s. Ali took enormous punishment from from the biggest hitting heavyweight boxers from arguably the greatest era of heavyweight boxing. Three fights against Frazier, three fights against Norton and an incredibly punishing fight against Shavers, who is widely regarded has the heaviest hitting fighter of all time. My word, the punishment Ali took was enormous. Ali should have retired after beating Foreman in 1974. After that fight he had 15 round fights against big hitting fighters. Plus Ron Lyle was on the Ali fight list after Foreman. Watch Ali’s fights. In fact going back to the first Ali/Frazier fight at Madison Square Garden in 1971. Ali took huge punishment in that fight. Frazier put Ali down twice with huge left hooks. In fact Ali was nothing like Floyd. Floyd was incredibly careful and defensive, which is an art in itself. Boxing is about hitting and not being hit. Unfortunately Ali got hit a huge amount.

+Rob Smith Ali v Holmes, consider, it was a good fight, both boxers had a tonne of respect for each other, Holmes cried after the fight because he knew Ali was not in a state to fight anymore, Ali knew he wouldn't of won, Holmes didn't want to win. Also, not sure if you know but Tyson was about 14 at the time of this fight and promised Ali he would beat Holmes in Ali's honour, years later Tyson v Holmes, Ali says to Tyson, "remember what you promised?". Tyson won on the 4th round. Going slightly off topic but it is good watching all the old videos of Ali in his younger days, the more of his fights I watch in order, the more sad I get because parkinsons started to take it's toll, and Ali wasn't fighting the way he was known on his last bunch of fights...end of his great career but the legend will always live on through out human history

As he said in this interview, he had a BAD dose of Thyroid medication, etc, so, EVEN with his obvious Parkinsons, he STILL could have made the Holmes fight VERY interesting if it wasn't for the faulty medication/vitamins dosage given to him before the fight, AMAZINGLY with the Parkinsons getting worse for the Berbick fight, he wasn't in as good of shape, but wasn't suffering from a BAD medication/vitamin dosage and made it...THAT CLOSE!!!!!!! Ali AMAZINGLY stood in there for 10 rounds with Holmes in the condition he was in, ANY other person would have been killed, but Muhammad is just, SIMPLY AMAZING, and without medication problems, but Parkinson's getting worse, and not as good of shape, but still decent, he REALLY gave Berbick some scares, if ONLY he had just A LITTLE bit extra in the tank...BUT without any medication problems, he COULD have SHOCKED THE WORLD, beating Holmes with Parkinson's, how INCREDIBLE would that have been, I'm just proud of how he survived and competed in the shape he was in!!!!!

Muhammad Ali, may he rest in peace, loved him at 1st then grew tired of his lazy ways (taking pills to lose weight) and not training properly, goofing off in the ring but I now remember him with fondness and love as I grow older and wiser

I said the same thing a few weeks ago. I cant put my finger on it, but there is also a different look in the eyes. He did not have that look in 74. wouldn't that be fascinating if someway you could pinpoint it tp the exact punch. Im gonna say probably Frazier 3.

The onset of Parkinson's was evident, in his speech & eyes. This fight should have never taken place, but the people who ran the Ali camp wanted one more big payday. He was not actually able to pass the physical, and somebody got paid. After the trilogy with Frazier, that was enough to retire mortal men. Ali and Frazier did irreparable damage to one another, and the Holmes fight was like the last nail in. I think deep down Holmes regrets that fight, although you know Larry loved his money.

It is really interesting in hind sight. It reminds me of an interview with Michael J Fox where he spoke about not being diagnosed with Parkinsons because he was so young. Similar age to Ali. It wasn't on doctors list for people his age at around 40. For Ali I would imagine that many, including himself just described him as being 'punchy'. Very sad indeed in view of what we know now.

Ali was and still is a Titan. One of the reasons I believe he fought Holmes, even when he was not well enough to perform, is that he is a titan, a giant that would die for what he loves, the art of boxing. Sure money was a factor as well. We are all familiar with the fictional beasts in film called Titans. Kong, Godzilla, Meg, etc. But guys like Ali, Robinson, Marciano, Dempsey, these are Titans that are real. It takes tanks and a pair of elephants to keep them down.

Time beat him as it does with all of us,it was just sad to so see him go trouh that,but he went on to do a better fight with Berbick,gavit his all,and then he did what hi said hi will do,hi faced reality and said nothing last forever not even Mohammed Ali,but his legacy will last for ever,hi will never be forgotten,and boxing was just a small part of this man;s greatness,Hi will be remembered as the Greatest Off All Time,but I think for the way he lived his life,inspired and helped others around him,and for being a champion of life,a champion of courage and strenght in face of adversity. RIP Mohammed you were and are loved and will be remembered for ever. What a great man you where indeed!
