I still remember in 1986 when this song was first aired on PTV. I remember how our entire family had gathered around that TV. We all were eating matar-qeema for dinner and it was a chilly October evening. Most of those family elders have long passed away. Good old Pakistan. Afsoos Pakistan was stricken by a nazar-e-bud. 😥

When I left Pakistan in 1986 the first time for US over 50 people came to the Airport to meet me. last year when I went to Pakistan i had to take an Uber. all 5 channels (karachi, lahore, islamabad, NWFP(kpk) and balochistan) tv had a contest in which ppl have to judge which song was best so Karachi tv brought this song under ameer imam production...I don't know who the director was... but the contest was win by "DIL DIL PAKISTAN" from Islamabad tv channel ... I think that happened in 1987-1988 during august quarter (seh mahi)...

@asif lashari I agree that Zia has nothing to do with it. It was the way PTV was despite Zia. But this song did not exist in any form before this version. The poetry is off course very old but making it into this song was Sahira Kazmi's idea and talent.

all 5 channels (karachi, lahore, islamabad, NWFP(kpk) and balochistan) tv had a contest in which ppl have to judge which song was best so Karachi tv brought this song ... but the contest was win by "DIL DIL PAKISTAN" from Islamabad tv channel ... I think that happened in 1987-1988 during august-december quarter (seh mahi)...

There are two languages in this song and I understand only one. The song is basically a Sufi song. The theme is that if you immerse yourself enough in the love of God, then you won't be afraid of worldly "tides" or "waves" - which could be destructive. This song really encapsulates the Sufi spirit.
