And Ali is actually out of shape for this Norton fight, he didn’t have enough time to train after he had a blood clot removed from his leg before this fight. It was evident since Ali’s body looks soft for this fight compared to how tight and fit his body look for the Foreman and Frazier fights before this.

There are a lot of comments here regarding pre-suspension Ali versus post-suspension Ali. Angelo Dundee told it like it was, when he said (referring to Ali's loss of skills as a result of the three and a half years of his prime that were robbed from him), "What you saw was plenty, but you never saw his best!" In other words, Ali's peak of boxing skills would have been achieved during and/or after those three and a half years had they not been stolen from him-and what skills those would have been!

The body shot that Norton hit Ali with in the third round would likely have stopped any other fighter. Ali had an amazing ability to take a punch, to any part of his body, and recuperate quickly. Joe Frazier learned this fact in he and Ali's third fight.

I agree, he had an Incredible ability to take body shots. i also really wonder how he managed to keep his face clean, cause he also many hard punches in the head. i Think the only 3 times while he looked pretty bad after the fights were vs Frazier number 1, vs Norton number 1, and vs Holmes. That's about it

Actually, Ali was out of shape for this fight but still can take it. Look how soft Ali’s body look here compared to how he looks for the Frazier and Foreman fights. Ali fought the Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki less than 3 months before this third Norton fight, Inoki laid on his back almost the entire fight so Ali cannot punch him, and he kept kicking Ali's legs. Ali had to undergo surgery afterward to remove blood clot from leg. Realistically, this fight should have been postponed.

I was at this fight and the one thing that really stood out was how freakin' cold and breezy it was that night. And the fighters did not have the benefit of the traditional overhead ring lights that I'm sure would have given them a little warmth. At the fight I had Norton winning very close, but with MANY even rounds. When I have seen the fight since then, I thought Ali won. It probably stuck with Kenny a long time about how he should have fought those last rounds with more urgency. I don't know what Bill Slayton was telling him in between rounds, but it stunk.

Soooo... was he REALLY ever champion? And for the record Holmes definitely won that fight, albeit still a close match. And ali definitely won this 3rd match, also very close. Let it sink in that a wayyy over the hill Ali still beat Norton, who in turn came close to beating a prime Holmes. Norton was really really good and Ali still beat him while being fairly washed up.

@@NoName-gv6nm it doesn’t matter if he got the title after a fight or he was crowned by the officials, the point is a championship doesn’t change hands if the match is won by one point or a hair thin close match. the Holmes fight was so close and yet norton managed to lose the championship, same goes for the 3rd Ali Norton fight norton clearly won the match yet the title stayed with ali due to non decisive victory. Exactly. people get so caught up into one particular punch that they forget that in boxing like anything else, scoring the most points wins. The fighter who lands the most punches win, not whoever throws the hardest single punch-unless it knocks them completely out of course. But if one fighter throws 300 punches and lands 250 and his opponent throws 100 and lands 50 in a full 15 round fight, its obvious who wins.

Muhammad was perhaps the best sportsman l ever saw. Yet, though he had lost most of his zest for boxing at this moment, he knew still, there hadn't been any opponent he couldn't take from and account himself in the ring. That was a man. Don't think he quite got over the bitter, hateful prejudice that was inflicted at the summit of his career by denouncing his rightful title and proscribing his professional boxing license for all most 4 years. Just line up few of the best, excellent opponents, and challenges that he fought, lost to, and again defeated in the ring. That is why he is the greatest.

Norton landed 194 power punches to 129 for Ali and they were more explosive. Ali was doubled over several times. His mistake was saying that he would take Norton out in the 5th but instead had to cower on the ropes and endure a true ass kicking. Be careful what you wish for!

Norton fought better in this fight, as in the first, and the fans booing at the end clearly thought so too. Still, you need to convincingly beat a champ, especially one who makes money for the industry the way Ali did.

It's funny when somepeople say Norton won this fight !! I love Norton he was a warrior But look at the fight one hard punch from Norton followed by 4 or 5 punches from Ali Ali way ahead in points Hard punces didn't hurt Ali because he has a steel chin and stamina plus smartness He is the greatest Norton real fighter That was the golden era of heavyweight division in the history of boxing RIP Ali and Norton

Ali looked to be in great shape for this fight - great stamina, dancing and quick. People can say all they like about diminished skills by this point but Ali had them to spare, which is why he was still a great competitor.

That makes the greatness, among other reasons. Ali was WAAAYY over the hill - three year layoff, came back in the 9th year of his career, fought Norton after fighting Frazier after a long, debilitating layoff....AND he's still this slick and tough. Never get's old watching him, but damn, I wish he had retired after Manila at the very latest. Foreman, ideally.

I remember watching this as a kid. People don't know that this fight was outside and Yankee stadium and at some point, there was light rain and drizzle falling. And these guys never blinked. I was torn because I, like most everyone else, was a huge Ali fan. But I also really liked Kenny and that Philly shell, crab like defensive style of his. I like the fact that he came from nowhere in 73 and upset Ali to put his name on the map. Ali got this decision but honestly, I called it a draw which would mean hardly retained his belt. Ali should have retired after this but definitely after heat won the title back from spinks in 78. definitely should not have fought Larry Holmes 2 years later and of course not Renaldo Snipes in 81. I couldn't even watch that fight because I knew he would lose badly.

Muhammad Ali's best performance against Ken Norton Ken Norton is a capable professional boxer, but his luck is small. He held the world championship for several months. We note that all of Norton's violin were in the shoulders, while Ali's punches were directed at the head. This is God's gift to the individual. This difference between Norton and Fraser Norton is unlucky at the beginning of his emergence He faced Foreman, faced Ernie Shaffers, Jerry Corrie, and Larry Holmes. He could not take advantage of his capabilities in resolving these battles. He quickly snatched the world title from him.

You win round by scoring head shot not a body shot you idiot In boxing the one who win as ali told Frazier the one who hit in the head the most norton got hit on his head the most Ali score better no matter how strong your shots are if that didn’t knock him down you lose round according to your dumb boxing logic Earnie Shavers should have won the first fight vs Holmes cause he hits harder ? It is hard to Judge many of the older Ali fights-because he would go to corners and let people hit him. Every round the judges would have to JUDGE how effective he and his opponent were. I think I look at this fight differently every time I watch it.
