They both have amazing physical gifts, but it just comes down to the fact that Ali was one of the best there's been at making adjustments in difficult fights, whereas I can't really think of a time Tyson has shown a capacity for that. He's shown heart, but he hasn't shown the ability to make changes mid-fight that altered the course of a bout. In some weird way, it reminds me of Zab Judah-Floyd Mayweather jr. Both had amazing physical gifts, but Mayweather jr.'s ability to make adjustments made all the difference.

You ever watch his bout with Pinklon Thomas? Tony Tucker? Other fights as well, but I'll use those as examples. Tyson out jabbed a man that had 6 inches in height and 12 inches in reach down the stretch of the Tucker bout to pull out a "close" UD with scores of 119-110, 118-110 and 116-112.

Unfortunately, we never got to see the career Mike Tyson should have had. Mike had real mental and addiction issues as he fell for every possible trap of fame. Tyson's prime was from before he won the title until he fired Kevin Rooney in either 87 or 88. He kept winning until the Douglas fight, but he was already in decline that didn't catch up until Douglas. When he fired Rooney, he severed ties to the people he and Cus made it to the top with. Just watch Tyson fight when Rooney was in his corner and then watch him fight just a couple of years later. Tyson moved brilliantly, but after firing Rooney, he never trained right again and was just walking his opponents down, trying to knock them out quickly rather than moving and boxing the way he did early on. Mike Tyson was a completely different fighter after firing Rooney because his whole life was a mess on top of his training and people around him being a joke. The early Tyson doesn't lose to Holyfield or any of those guys. Tyson would have smashed Joe Frazier easily, but Prime Tyson vs. Prime Ali would be fun. Prime Ali meant before Vietnam and prime Tyson, being the could years after winning the title. I think Tyson would have been hard for Ali to hit because he would give Ali a combination of speed and power he never saw before. Ali was able to run across the ring and pop Foreman in the face because George was big and slow, but Tyson would have given him a much better fight than George did. I think Tyson would be effective, but Ali Ali would use his jab to puff Mike's eyes up and start being more aggressive later on. I say Ali late, if not by decision, but because of Tyson's massive power, he would be dangerous because Ali couldn't afford to make any mistakes. If they fought 10 times, Ali would win 6 or 7 times, in my opinion.

Interesting take.......Judah,Mayweather also I think is telling in another way....while Mayweather always possessed Lazer focus and confidence, Judah could be discouraged and lose focus in adversity....same could be said for Tyson....also at 6"3 Ali had enough height to make it a less than ideal situation....if they fought 10 times I'd say Ali would win 6 or 7 that said,Tyson would won the others by knockout catching Ali cold early

I can't believe that nobody mentions Quick Tillis fight. He appears in the video briefly. He fought like prime Ali, and Tyson(prime alegedly) had all sorts of problems. And Ali was better than Tillis in every way: faster, better chin, more athletic, better boxer, higher ring IQ, better stamina, boudless self confidence. Plus Ali's mind games. Remember, bullies like Tyson were Ali's specialty. I can totally imagine Ali destroying Mike mentally during clinches. "That all you got Mike?" I see Ali losing first few rounds as he studies Tyson, and whether the storm. Than 2 or 3 quite close rounds, and Ali dominating the rest of the bout. UD in 12 rounds, or even late TKO on cuts in 15 rounder. Nobody destroys Ali quickly. Norton was stopped few times in 1 or 2 rounds. Frazier got crushed by Foreman's power in 2. But nobody went through Ali just like that. Prime, or even old and with Parkinson.

We're missing an important element of the clash... The pre fight phycological war that Ali would use against Tyson. Ali would understand and exploit Tyson's insecurities better than anyone. He would get Tyson so angry with the name calling, the mocking, the public shaming that Tyson would forget his game plan. Granted, a super angry Tyson is not an appealing prospect to get in the ring with. But id wager that Ali would have all but won before he even got in the ring. Tyson would explode and lose all discipline. Ali would wait and then turn Tiger. It would be an awesome sight to see!

Your statement "I'm never really confident of my choices" is what makes you a great analyst. You're always willing to see the opposite possibility with clarity. I'm slightly more confident that Ali would prevail, simply because he beat many great heavyweight champions during his career ( which I believe to be a true test of greatness). And among them were a mix of power punchers, fast punchers and stylists. His ring IQ is second to none. He would often sacrifice the early rounds and use them as an opportunity, in order to fully grasp his opponent's strategy for fighting him; because he seemed to understand that analysis of his opponents' earlier fights wasn't sufficient to fully understanding how they would approach Ali, personally. And Ali was never knocked out. I could go on forever, but I won't. That's just my humble opinion. Thanks for the content.

An important, if not the most important consideration, is if Cus D’amato is coaching a prime Tyson. When Cus died, he took a large piece of Tyson with him - the relentless focus, discipline and tactics. Prime Tyson with Cus at his side probably wins as it is well established that Cus had sorted out Ali’s style and Frazier’s approach was the right style. Mike has the a similar style to Frazier with appreciably more speed, power, agility, skill and reflexes. That combined with coaching from Cus which would keep mike focused, prepared and driven wins. Ali fought fighters as strong (and stronger than Tyson) but they weren’t as fast and agile. Ali fought fast agile fighters but they didn’t have the power of Tyson. Prime motivated and focused Tyson is a stylistic nightmare for Ali.

Brilliant video. I've never see someone mention the attributes as fairly as you have with both of these men. I think it is important to note what could have been if Tyson had Rooney in his corner in a fight like this, or Ali's mind games during the build up and the actual fight against Mike's mind at the time. I think it's also important to add that Ali really struggled against Ken Norton's jab whenever he jabbed with Ali, which is something Mike Tyson did a lot when he was still with Rooney and cus. I completely agree with your call, however, I could see it swaying in either direction.

The speed that Ali lost after his three years away was of feet not hands. He still had great footwork, but no longer had that freakish fleetness. In compensation, he had finished maturing physically, and was bigger and stronger. If we're looking at fifteen rounds, I see Ali stopping Tyson late. About Frazier, I think he had begun a very gradual slide by the first Ali fight, compared with the guy of the Mathis and second Bonavena fights, and it's true he was blind, or all but, in his left eye for much of his career. I think this depends on age. A 20 year old Tyson beats a 20 year old Ali, but a 24 year old Ali beats a 24 year old Tyson. A 30 year old Ali beats a 30 year old Tyson. Tyson vs Tillis is as close as you can get to a Tyson vs Ali match. Tyson won on points, but you can see Tillis’ style (like Ali’s) is the right way to beat a prime Tyson. (stick and move)

I think the best fights to look at to see how Mike would have faired against Ali are the Pinklon Thomas, Larry Holmes and Tyrell Biggs fights. He really really struggled to adjust to taller fighters with quick feet, a stiff and rapid jab and a great ability to wrap him up whenever he got too close. Ultimately his power lifted him out of trouble each time, but when you watch those early Biggs rounds before he abandons his gameplan you do wonder how a more disciplined and skilled fighter in Ali would have faired. Also, Ali had one hell of a chin that I don't believe Mike could have cracked.

Just went and watched those fights again (full fights are on youtube). I don't think you're quite right. Tyson was by far the superior fighter in all of those fights. This is not saying he'd win Ali but he didn't have any trouble beating those three. He weared them down and knocked them out. If anything, you can see he was a much smarter and better boxer than his reputation. The real awesome thing with Mike is that with Kevin Rooney he went 35-0 (31 KO's) and never once got hurt at all. Evander Holyfield said that after firing Rooney Tyson went from unpredictable to predictable and he felt quite confident he could beat him then. His decline is easily seen when you watch his fights in chronological order. Of course the fame, money and cocaine played a big role too.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Floyd Patterson in this hypothetical match up, also trained by D'Amato. Ali boxed circles around him following the Liston dualogy. Although I agree that even with picking Ali to win I wouldn't bet money on it. Watching a lot of Frazier's fights, I see a lot of body-head combos that feel very "proto-Tyson" D'Amato was almost certain to have been taking notes when teaching Tyson.

@ICCraider 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is that Mike Tyson's biggest weapon against Ali is his left hook which was actually used by Sugar Ray Leonard to hurt Tommy Hearns in the 5th round of their 2nd fight. So I really recommend watching the 5th round of that fight as Ray Leonard basically becomes Mike while Hearns becomes Ali. And funny enough Hearns had problems against fighters with a strong left hook just like his idol Ali. Also Mike's hook is more of a rear left hook because of the positioning of his front leg so it will have way more power than Frazier's so if it lands it'll definitely hurt Ali. Especially the young Ali which was actually 11 pounds lighter than his counterpart which faced Frazier so his durability against punches would significantly decrease. So *if* Mike lands that hook, there's a good chance that Ali's going down whether it be the body or the chi.

The Joe Frazier from the FOTC was also at his absolute peak. Douglas on the other hand, while his performance was inspirational, was just an example of the stars aligning perfectly for a fighter. He trained super hard and had that added motivation from his mother dying, while Tyson under trained and didn't take the fight seriously. Joe was just relentless. I remember such a conversation about a dream fight between Ali and Tyson years ago in a pub, and my drunk friend was convinced, that Tyson would knock Ali out. And this is what a lot of younger boxing fans are saying, who are more influenced by the popularity of Tyson. I am not sure, if we should take the first Frazier fight as a reference how Ali would do against Tyson, because this was his third fight after a 3 years absence. The second fight is a better indication, where we see, how Ali could hold a freak of nature in distance. Where Tyson is different than Frazier is, Frazier is unbreakable (as long as you are not Foreman) but Tyson is fragile. And if we consider, that Ali is unbreakable as well, Ali would break Tyson somwhere between round 7-10. It is very comperable with the Foreman fight. There is one thing that Tyson said about Ali which is cruicial: "Ali was a t-rex in the ring and he was ready to die there. I was not." And it is this determination of Ali, that would bring him the victory. The fight will be like this: Tyson will cause problems to Ali in the first 4 rounds, Ali will adjust to Tysons style and will mock on him while the fight, Tyson will slow down after 5 and will get frustrated, Ali will catch him after that. Tyson will not go the distance. TKO Ali round 9 ;-)

I agree, Tyson had that typical puncher's bully mentality, as did the early Foreman. They would get frustrated and thrown off when they couldn't have their way early, left without a plan B. Tyson did not handle adversity well at all, the Buster Douglas and Holyfield fights clearly show that he couldn't adapt to well when plan A didn't work. Frazier on the other hand was unbreakable, even if he lost the first half of the fight, he would not be deterred and keep going strong. Facing Ali, I think Tyson would fall victim to his own frustration.

My take. Ali fought Floyd Patterson. Patterson had the same Peek a Boo style that Tyson has. Ali easily won both fights against Patterson. Having said that, Tyson has soooooo much more power than Patterson. So, this is how I envision a fight between the two. A 60s Ali would see Tyson and just do the same game plan he had with Patterson, but eventually Tyson would knock Ali down. Ali would then get serious and stop clowning around, and I think he would easily beat Tyson. Having said that, I do believe Tyson could beat a 70s Ali. Ali simply fought too much in close quarters in the 70s. If Ali tried the same trick he did with Foreman, Tyson would absolutely destroy Ali. While Foreman had a very strong punch, Tyson was quicker, and throw in a barrage of punches that I think would simply be too much for Ali. So, in short. A 60s Ali beats an 80s Tyson, but an 80s Tyson beats a 70s Ali.

I agree with the mental aspect but I believe it didn't get a chance to develop with Tyson. His career was on the down slide after Spinks and he had a bunch of Don King YES men that pretty much told Tyson he was the best and just go in there and take em out. I think in this matchup with both in their prime and Tyson with Rooney in his corner this is a very competitive fight. One thing that Ali did was fight backing up and boxing and Tyson ate that style up. Thats why Frazier was very effective landing that left hook on Ali as Ali backed up jabbing. I still give Ali the edge because Ali would adjust tie up Tyson coming in the hit him with flurries on the break then do it all over again. Ali by split decision if 12 rounds, unanimous if 15 rounds

Ali the hardest puncher in heavyweight history? Where do you get that? He's quick, great ring IQ, and maybe the greatest heavyweight outside fighter of all time, but I can't see him punching harder than Louis, or Tyson for that matter.

Would you consider 90s George Foreman vs Tyson Fury?! I've seen it discussed a bunch on social media and it was a lot more of a heated debate than I would have thought.

Always fun to look at this stuff (though I find myself glancing away when I see the Ali-Holmes footage). So many imponderables. The distance of the fight is a good point you bring up... imagine if all the bouts in history were four-rounders, Jermain Taylor would have been a megastar... and may never have won a fight in the 15 round era. There's also issues like the punching power involved. This is hard to rate, as I've read articles that had a sparring partner saying Frazier hit harder than Foreman, and ISTR an edition of the Ring's "The Best I Faced" saw someone say Pinklon Thomas hit harder than Tyson, but wasn't as consistent. (I can't find that now). I side with Ali, but always a great topic... 35 years a boxing fan? You must be one of the older generation like me, Rummy.

It already happened. Ali vs Liston is as close as it can get. Douglas vs Tyson is also pretty close. How'd those turn out? And one more thing -- Tyson always relied on his technique and power whereas Ali was a master strategist. He could find a variety of ways to dismantle an opponent.

I think in reality Bowe v Tyson, should be the next discussion. Who would of won that one ? I would go for Ali, he fought when it was 15 rounds, way better engine. Smoking Joe was in his prime when he fought Ali in his first fight , Ali was coming back from a lay off of two years or so.The two fights after Ali beat Smoking Joe .

A wonderful video, thank you! It's one I've thought about a lot - as I believe the peak Ali and peak Tyson were probably the best two heavyweights of all-time! (With Larry Holmes in at third!) - and I must say we are thinking along the same lines! Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to finding out what you thought about the recent Heavyweight bill from the Middle East.

Dude did you read my mind? I was literally just thinking about this yesterday! My uncle and I talk about this all the time. He says prime Tyson is unbeatable. I think Ali could have beaten any boxer in history. I love both of them of course but Ali had more heart and ring iq imo. Also, I don’t think Ali would have been intimidated by Tyson. He faced and ko’d a prime George Foreman so I don’t see him getting shook by anyone. Anyway, great video Rummy!

Both these guys in their prime were awesome. I think Tyson would have got the better of the early rounds with his aggression and might have even knocked Ali down. But Ali always gets back up! I think Ali would have started to find the target by about round 4 or 5 then dominate the later rounds with Tyson still having his moments though. Ali might have forced a late stoppage or won on points. Ali would have been just that little bit more elusive, smart, cunning and accurate with his punches. Ali would have had a much stronger desire than Tyson to win a tough fight. Great video and enjoyable to watch.

They came from different eras in boxing and had entirely different tactics. Ali was a very intelligent fighter, very enduring, and specialized in exhausting his opponent before moving in for the kill. Tyson was a powerhouse who hammered his opponents ruthlessly from the word go. I would have thought that Tyson would most likely beat Ali if these two had met when either one was in his prime.

Different eras yes but not different tactics. Floyd Patterson ans Tyson were identical stylistically, cus D'mato trained both in the same styles and Ali fought patterson twice so that style of peekaboo is nothing Ali isn't familiar with. He's fought the same style as Tyson and he'd fought bigger punchers in foreman and shavers. It'd be an interesting fight.
