Nationally, Lubbers won six light-heavyweight and two heavyweight amateur titles. In 1970, he turned professional, and in 1971 won a national heavyweight title, holding it until his retirement in 1981. Internationally, he unsuccessfully competed at several European championships. In 1973 he fought Muhammad Ali in Jakarta and went the full 12 rounds with Ali. In 1986, he was arrested in Portugal for drug trafficking and jailed for four years. After that he worked on funfairs (known as carnivals in standard U.S. English language) with his wife Ria, and eventually became homeless after she was declared bankrupt in 1999.[1][2]

Seems strange seeing an Ali fight from the seventies in black-and-white. Ali has to be the most travelled fighter, certainly heavyweight, in history. Truly a world figure, he fought in Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan and here Indonesia in Asia alone.

Ali's right hand middle knuckle was very sore and swollen for this fight and his previous fight with Ken Norton. (Their 2nd fight). He had just fought Kenny on September 10th. This is why he didn't use his right hand much in this fight. Dr.. Ferdie Pacheco had to shoot his hand up with cortisone and Novocaine.

Ali taking batting practice. A light gym workout. I guess he needed the exercise. You can see he’s hardly even trying. He’s bored. There’s no challenge. He’s doing just enough to win but no more. Ali only gave 100 percent when he faced very strong opponents - the first Liston fight, the fights with Frazier, Norton, Foreman and Shavers. He was so talented, he could get away with it most of the time.

@ Felipe everybody’s a skeptic. @ Robert To be fair, Holmes was Ali’s sparring partner for a long time. Ali had been beating Holmes since he was a kid. He should’ve been proud of the success of his old protégés. It was actually one of Ali’s uglier moments, choosing to fight Holmes. And Holmes cried all throughout the fight because he looked up to Ali so much, he hated beating up Ali. Holmes knew every move Ali had and Ali was getting older and sicker. He showed little class challenging Holmes. Ali’s ego wouldn’t allow anyone else to get any glory. It’s sad that Holmes was painted a villain by popular history. The truth is as beautiful as The Greatest was, in his shadow he could be unbelievably cruel and selfish. Holmes was doing God’s work that night, sending a clear message to Ali that his sun had already set.

Few people realize that Ali actually had a serious bursitis in his right hand that hindered his career in the early 70s. In this fight it was especially bad and he barely used his right. It was also a problem in both his first and second Norton fights. Treatment for the condition improved in the later part of his 70s career and it was less a problem. He even considered retiring because of the pain.

Ali needed someone to fight with him for 12 rounds. this was a preparation before match with Frazier. However, Ali had a plan to knock out Rudi in round twelve but it didn't work. Watching this fight again reminds me of just how much most everyone wanted to see Howard knocked out. He was one of those guys with a mouth that obliterated his vision every time he opened. For example: There are several points in this fight where Ali had thrown the right just moments before Cosell drones on about Ali not having thrown a single right hand. He missed it because his mouth had been running when it was thrown. But, I have to say this, Howard served to heighten the Ali mystique. There was always lots of controversy. Ali, Cosell. Many decisions. Lots and lots of controversy. Some things people are still arguing over. Lots of controversy. The one thing seldom disagreed upon thought, was that Ali should have knocked out Cosell. "He had it coming."

Cosell was indeed a man who fed off his own vocalizations. He ran his mouth way too much and missed the real action. He only knew boxing just enough to sound like he was an expert. Lubbers actually got in some nice overhand shots with both hands that snapped Alis head back and Cosell made no mention of it at all. POS announcer. If you want to hear a real pro call a fight just listen to Don Dunphy.
@TheJazz612 жыл бұрын
I always turn sound off when Cosell is on
@humanbeing2420 Жыл бұрын
I agree completely. The fact that Cosell insisted on calling boxing matches by himself speaks volumes. He wanted the air entirely to himself - he hated sharing the spotlight with anyone else (which is why his tenure on Monday Night Football was so troubled). His technical understanding of boxing was extremely limited, and with his insistence on making himself, rather than the action, the center of the viewer's attention, the result was that the viewer was entirely on their own in terms of insight into what is happening in the ring. Cosell wasn't even good at simple blow-by-blow - just describing the action - which is the bare minimum that an announcer should be capable of.

Get in that perfect magic punch to end the fight. Ali doesn't ever seem to show concern in regard to the outcome. He doesn't want to get hurt himself. But he doesn't really go after Lubbers in an attempt to beat him into submission. Again. A game of Cat and Mouse. More like a tune up fight. Go the distance for the endurance test. He did suck. Couldn't announce for shit. If he didn't have Ali's coat tails to hang on to he would have continued to be a nobody. Was in love with his own voice.

Rudi Lubbers was brave enough to enter the ring with that legend. Ali was brave and kind enough to let him touch him when he was in the corner.

A game little pug! Good work out for Ali. I was only 8 at the time of this fight, but now i can see why my father would always yell at the tv " shut up Cosell!".

If Rudi Lubbers threw more a little more one-two combination punches he would have survived.

I read some of the comments on here he not the greatest he's carrying a bum for 12 rounds! well boys and girls let me tell you something. I'm 80 years old the greatest was a Showman and you can bet your sweet ass if Muhammad Ali had to be anybody in his day he could have done it! the bottom line he is the greatest!!!! Everybody wanted to see this man for one rounds or 12 rounds whoever he fought

My god ... I had forgotten just what a contemptible man Howard Cosell was. Why did he agree to this voice over when he makes it plain he is not interested in the fight?
