That wouldn't have made sense to film it in Chinese with English subs, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was a Chinese film.. Disney is an American company. If that's what you're looking for, there is a Chinese version of Mulan that was released in 2009 called Mulan: Rise of the Warrior. I do think that Disney plus should have had Chinese subtitles ready though, that was very disappointing...

Who cares! I am ethnic Chinese but I really like the re-imagined Asian culture (of a certain dynasty in the old days, mostly North Wei Dynasty) reflected in this movie. It is like a fairy tale/Disney-style type of story. It is a good story and it is beautifully-presented and that is what counts! It really doesn't have to fit one's stereotype of all the recent dynasties' clothing and architecture styles!

This movie was pretty much made to please the Chinese Communist Party. It was never their goal to showcase true east Asian culture.

Even Donnie chuckled on set watching how Hollywood make movies. He was like I'm here because this is the easiest project in my whole life.

Caro has never directed an action movie in her entire career and it shows here. Heck, even her expertise in drama also fails the movie's more dramatic scenes. I genuinely have no idea why they even hired her to direct a blockbuster like Mulan.

Yes totally agree with an all women team. At least they got costumes right and did research I’ll give it to them. Overall the movie was 8.5/10 and I wish the battle scenes were much more longer. The camera is always zooming in like every 10 seconds which was annoying.

FINALLY! The comment I was looking for. Just because you don't like the actress doesn't mean you sabotage the movie that she and many others have worked so hard for. I'm surprised that they even went on into discussing their ideals and toxic comments under every Mulan-related video.

Let me just ruin this for you, parts of this film for shot in Xinjiang. You know that it is a place where they hold capture Chinese Muslims in concentration camps? Disney in the end credits the Chinese Bureaus in charge of these camps letting them film in the location. It's like thanking them for filming in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Because atrocities are still going on in these camps in Xinjiang.

Exactly the reason why the changed certain thing like mushu changed to a pheonix. Only people cared was how it should be similar to the animated one. The animated movie wasn't really popular much in china due to not being respectful for the culture. Some even called an american movie with chinese accessories and they hate mushu too.

As a Chinese, this movie did not represent the Chinese culture accurately at all, or at least based on my own opinion. The costume and set did not give an ancient Chinese vibe(Mulan’s village looked more like a minority tribe 😂), the forbidden city was way too easy to sneak into for the Rourans, not to mention also way too easily saved by Mulan and the soldiers. The emperor seemed like he had twenty guards, while he so easily got captured and could only wait for Mulan’s rescue and no one else cared 😂 The whole concept of Qi also sounds really strange, whatever they were trying to imply, in a Chinese film they most likely might use a different word for it. The Phoenix is also a strange creature to use, because in ancient Chinese culture it is usually only used for the one and only Empress. Overall there are too many aspects of this movie that did not appear “Chinese” to me and though that is my own opinion, I think many other Chinese might agree 😅
