There is literally an association with educated Chinese experts on Chinese historical clothing called the Chinese Costume Revival Association that uses historical evidence and research down by experts that dedicated their life to Chinese culture to recreate Chinese clothing culture. A group of Chinese high-school students were able to contact them to use their costumes for a high school project, but apparently a multi-millionaire dollar company of Disney can;t hire them for a live-action movie. Another thing I hate is that Disney doesn’t bother to read Confucian religious texts on filial piety, one of the main themes in the “Ballad of Mulan”, also an important Chinese virtue.

They note that it isn't historically accurate and accept that the game celebrates culture and history in a beautiful way.

As a Chinese-American, this whole movie yelled "token Asian friend" because they only had an Asian cast, but the production team was made of people who weren't. They could have saved so much money and hired an actual Chinese person (or someone who grew up in "the culture" at least) instead of flying all over to look at things... This made me feel like the producers are trying to prove that they can be "woke" or something about other cultures. My fellow Asian-American friends said this Movie is like a Westerner's fantasy of historic China. We know the poem is not a history book, but still, we expected something...better? (Another review from Xiran Jay Zhao compared her to Elsa, already born with power and then has to hide it, BUT she also has to also "find herself" or something, and then everything is okay in the end lol) [Cartoon] Mulan was relatable because she had to work to prove she could keep up with the army men while showing her cunning or intelligent side really. I can't relate to someone who is already born great. Thank you for this educational video.

I have to say that I really wanted to see this movie based on the trailers BUT every review of this movie I have watched (and this is the third person of Chinese heritage/descent) have blasted this film for trying to hard to appeal to both eastern and western audiences and succeeding with neither. The cultural mistakes appear to be varied and many and the inclusion of western ideas in the story seems to have ruined it for many. I may still give it a shot since I am a white guy I am not so familiar with many of the nuances and so it may still be watchable for me. Ignorance in this case may be a blessing. I am however sad that Disney who is always attempting to prove how woke they are...did not have the foresight to at least have a Chinese historian or cultural liaison to insure authenticity.

In fact, one of the earliest attested martial arts theories in China was attributed to a woman, who was often referred to in the historical records as the Maiden of Yue (越女),who lived during the Spring & Autumn Period (around 500 BC) . She taught swordsmanship to the soldiers of the kingdom of Yue (hence her epithet) and thus contributed to the kingdom of Yue's conquest of the nearby kingdom of Wu. There's a few more examples of stories from ancient China of women with extraordinary martial prowess (who, of course, attained their ability through work rather than being born with it.), like 红线、红拂女 etc ... When I first heard of those I thought they were from the novels of the late Ming Dynasty (1600AD) or later ... but then I found out the stories were already around by the time of the Tang Dynasty (700AD) and possibly earlier !!! (Yes folks, that's how far back the Wuxia literary tradition goes, complete with the femme fatales you see in popular Wuxia C-Dramas nowadays. They're in fact NOT just a modern invention!) Most importantly, these stories were written in such a way that showed admiration for these heroines rather than denigrating them as "witches". So the ancient Chinese *did* have high respect for capable female warriors, despite the overall atmosphere in society having more "domestic" expectations for women. In fact, the very fact that the Ballad of Mulan was written and passed down shows that at least a fraction of the people in China at that time found such a concept acceptable. So when in the movie Mulan is told, "if you show your abilities you'll be looked down as a witch", I felt like, "DUDE ! THAT'S NOT HOW IT GOES IN ANCIENT CHINESE CULTURE AT ALL !!!"

I'm glad someone brought up the clothing thing. For thousands of years, the colors purple, violet, and indigo were incredibly difficult to obtain and even harder to produce. Making those colors into dye for clothing was even rarer, as such purple and violet hues were often considered the global symbol of extreme wealth and royalty for most countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia. It was easier to obtain a chunk of gold and diamonds than something made with a purple /violet paint or dye.

Tesla-Effect I think in the other remakes it’s forgivable, because they weren’t going for complete historical accuracy. However, the whole reason they cut out so much from the original Mulan was to make the live action more realistic and closer to the ballad of Mulan. Which they obviously failed at because since when did Chi give you that ability to CATCH ARROWS. Also since it’s a kids movie they wanted to make the setting and clothes more colorful and nice to look at. More ascetically pleasing, a lack of colors would make the movie a bit dull and take away its vibrant energy
@lucariomew365
@lucariomew365 3 жыл бұрын
@Tesla-Effect The issue is that Disney wasn't advertising for going for more "realism" in the previous live-action remakes. They were truly live-action *fairy tales* and Disney chose to ham it up just because they could. Mulan, however, is more of a historical war-drama/historical fiction (even though the actual Ballad of Mulan is often regarded as a legend or fable) with a bit of fantasy (specifically wuxia). Minor fantasy elements aside, Disney was going for historical "authenticity" and cultural realism over anything else-which they actually failed at in every way that counts.

biggest issue I had is that Disney stripped the whole theme of "Family piety" or Filial responsibility from the story. Even the cartoon version had this aspect in it. When you take a story with the moral of filial responsibility as it's theme, and strip it out you remove the whole backbone and point of the story. Its a theme that westerners and easterners both understand inherently, yet somehow Disney's crack team of millennial diverse writers can't manage to catch the central core to the story. Hell, even cheep wuxia and xanxia web-novels do a better job of representing the themes of Filial responsibility. so as a wuxia (which this is desperately trying to be) it even fails at the basics. Furthermore the writer/directors don't even give mulan a heroes journey. this is a terrible work of fiction, it doesn't function as a morality tale, it doesn't function as a fantasy, it just is a waste of time to watch. BTW: I'm not Chinese, and have no one in my family as Chinese. And even I knew this failed on all levels; I just happen to enjoy Chinese webnovels.

The least Disney could do was do some research and keep some aspects true to the legend. Also, it's clear they didn't research properly because it's a rookie mistake for a normal person to mix up fenghuang with the phoenix since they're similar. Similar but not the same. The Western phoenix symbolises revival, a bird that is said to be born from ashes. The Eastern "phoenix" - fenghuang - symbolises harmony and is immortal but not consumed by its flames (a quote from the movie). What's infuriating is that they took out Wushu on the grounds that they want to be more respectful to the culture but didn't respect the culture enough to research it more than a quick read on TVTropes or something of that level of commitment. Edit: I specified *normal person* because that's for someone whose job isn't to write a whole movie and set the premise based on an existing culture. re: the whole makeup thing, it REALLY felt like they were going for a pointed DIG at Chinese culture, it had a very "haha look at these weird foreign people" vibe, and I have to say that the original movie's matchmaker scene felt pretty similar but this felt even more overt.
@flysmask

Yeah, but at least in the original it was supposed to be a comedy scene and actually served the purpose. And the makeup in the animated version didn't really look that bad, it was exaggerated yes but not bad like in the action movie which was supposed to be a 'serious'. I mean there is a running gag in China about matchmakers in general, and actually the animated version did a relatively decent job visually to fit the joke stereotype in China, although they gave the matchmaker too much prestige and importance.

@@flysmask I think that's the key point, the makeup scene is a nod to the original animation which was not making fun of anyone but was an exaggerated take on Mulan trying to fit social roles that she clearly didn't fit into. I think the issue is that Disney couldn't commit to either taking cues from the animations or making a serious drama based in historical accuracy. The middle compromise is the mess we got in the live-action. It may have seemed like mockery to some (especially the mainland Chinese audience, I imagine) but in this particular scene I don't think that was the intention. Also the mishmash of cultural and historical research and inadequate implementation of *their interpretation* of Tang Dynasty makeup didn't help either. I've seen artifacts in person at museums like the renown Shaanxi History Museum. It's clear what they were aiming for, just a shame how they missed the mark.

Believe it or not Europeans have never found rolling around in mud, unkept hair or unnecessary (and expensive at time) leather fashionable. If anything Asia has it better because they feel less able to insult the history, values and achievements and tend instead to use it as a soapbox for going on about how evil and barbaric westerners are compared to whichever foreign people they are compared to (which is probably were the stupid colouring comes from as you have to compare to the western dark blacks, Brown's and dirt). We live in a strange time when the Chinese start to appreciate the animated movie over the "realistic" film. My observation as a westerner is that people aren't as mad with the cartoon anymore because there never was that promise of a "faithful and realistic" adaptation of the legend. It was Disney's take on Mulan. It wasn't perfect (I may be one of the few that didn't care for Mushu) but it never promised to be 100% accurate. This movie, on the other hand, promised a historically accurate version of Mulan. Now, I would have been down for that since I don't know the original legend and it would be interesting to see a more faithful version of the tale. Hell, a more realistic take on what China looked like back then would have been interesting since C-dramas aren't that popular over here. I had the same feelings for the remake of Aladdin when they announced it; it would have been awesome to see the original tale on screen that was historically actuate for the time. But, Disney just couldn't decide if they wanted to actually make a realistic movie or just remake the cartoon in live-action. They did the same thing with "Mary Poppins Returns"; it looked like they wanted to do a sequel but also wanted to remake the original film. They just couldn't decide so they just fused the two ideas together and now we have this monstrosity. I think the two big reasons why this movie failed is that a) most of the creative decisions were made by "woke" white people and b) Disney wanted to play cheap stripper for the Chinese population/government. But I'm just an ignorant white girl so any Chinese people are free to criticize my take on this.

Qi is more associated with Chinese medicine. It is hard to describe, but it is sort of like blood, but as an “energy” or “life force” flow. My friend replied that Liu lacks the typical modelling industry height. Also, her facial features are actually less than ideally symmetrical. So she stuck neither in one category nor another, really, considering the level of her acting competency. So what can she actually do...? Hmm... a look at her background might help.

@biracialcinephiliac
@biracialcinephiliac 3 жыл бұрын
Jake Lee that’s exactly the point lol Americans can’t say that about any of these empowerment movies they’ve been putting out. Disney doesn’t care about Chinese culture, they care about Chinese money. But they’re using the story of Mulan as an excuse to push the Hollywood “feminist” agenda, which doesn’t help or inspire anybody. And when American people ask for an all inclusive story that all people can relate to as a whole, they’re called sexists, racists, blah blah. And critics blame these people for films losing money, etc. it’s a whole mess. And we had hope for Mulan.. But this is how Hollywood is making movies right now, and they’re dragging China into it. It’s insulting to everybody lol. Though it’ll be interesting to see how they respond to the backlash this time, who they’ll blame.
@justalostlocal
@justalostlocal 3 жыл бұрын
Why are people dragging feminism through this mess? This movie is not remotely feminist in fact it bastardised it. You have a strong woman sacrificing herself for trivial stuff and stayed subservient to a man weaker than her. You got Mulan upholding the patriarchy despite they hate women like her. Saying „I know my place“ the fuck? They ruined a Chinese feminist icon. Just because Disney say they support progressives doesn’t mean they do, all they care about is money. Doing this Hollywood lean-in girl power narrative is all they dare to write because real feminism is much more complicated, nuanced and hard to swallow for a average audience than girl boss. Listen, yall if Disney is indeed left leaning, they could’ve made a interesting movie about how Chinese culture actually treat women in that period and it’s effect on our protagonists by hiring Chinese talents or at least Chinese Americans, but nooooo we got a cheap orientalists fantasy vomited out by an entirely white writers team instead.
@biracialcinephiliac
@biracialcinephiliac 3 жыл бұрын
@L Lin EXACTLY!! That’s why I put “feminist” in quotes lol. None of these movies are remotely feminist. None of these girl power movies Hollywood is doing. I mean they went out of their way to make Jasmine MORE subservient than in the animated Aladdin lol just to force their way into an empowerment story. Movies like Captain Marvel, The new Charlie’s Angels, The new Star Wars trilogy, Birds of Prey, etc. They’re full of women just naturally being perfect and “strong”, and men just have to deal with it or get bent. That’s not how feminism works.. feminism isn’t the domination of women over men and entitlement of praise without earning it through hard work, like a *hero’s journey.* Disney isn’t actually feminist, they just want the credit of looking progressive, while undermining their own message. All while inhibiting the freedom of speech of those who point that out. Yeah it is an American problem, but Americans are still waiting for this shit to stop happening so movies can return to moralist escapism, rather than sociopolitical propaganda. It’s so unbelievably insulting what Disney did with Mulan, for both our countries, for everybody. They deserve to lose money over this. But they’re not going to change any time soon.

Cherl EZE they wanted to reference the original ballad because they were advertising this movie as being accurate to the source material for Chinese audiences.. while completely proving they do not care or have no knowledge of the significance of it at all. The line in the movie makes no sense. It’s a random comment that is ignored in the movie and contradicts itself. If a female rabbit and a male are running side by side, there’s literally no way for Mulan in the movie to tell their genders. Yet she does. Which contradicts the whole moral of Milan’s story!! Dkdkdhdjdk lol 🤦‍♀️
@justalostlocal
@justalostlocal 3 жыл бұрын
@@cherleze4790 That makes zero sense because you look at it at surface level. That line is lifted from the original Ballad of Mulan without context. They subliminally massaged girl boss narrative not feminism. If you paid attention you will notice how the latter half movie with the chi supernatural soldier bs betrayed that very sentiment anyway. Mulan is legend figure who enlisted for 10 years and a general, she said it as a response to her soldiers asking how they didn't notice her gender being decade in war together. In context it's: The buck hop here and there. The doe's eyes are muddled and fuddeled. But when the two rabbits run side by side. How can you tell the female from the male?" The two genders are different in ways, but those differences don't hinder them being equals. Just because disney throw in one liner for window dressing doesn't make them progressive. The whole movie is conservative at best.

I honestly hate to say this but this version of Disney's Mulan is text book cultural appropriation. They took mythology/lore from another culture and reworked it to fit their narrative, then interlaced and misused parts of that cultures spiritual beliefs as a "magic power" to move the story along. From a cultural perspective its just trash... and on top of that it was just a bad movie. I was heart broken because the original animated Mulan was on of my favorite Disney movies.

Mulan is basically a Mary Sue in this movie. Plain and simple, and it took all the enjoyment from watching her on screen from the original, among all the nonsensical things removed and added to this soulless remake. I adore the animation, so after seeing this borefest with spoon-fed female empowerment I definitely wouldn't have minded getting a shot by shot remake of the original...There's nothing wrong with that, it just took out all the fun and charm from the movie, and in its attempt to be more grounded it instead made everything but flat and unfeeling. So I couldn't help but roll my eyes during the battle sequence when Mulan, the unbeatable chosen one, OP protagonist stripped her armor and rode off to fight the antagonists...which should've been the very reason why i was watching it. So yeah, I agree with you in everything 100 percent. I expected far more from this, far, far more. They should've just let a director familiar with this genre of movies (and culture) to work on this one, as even to a mostly ignorant westerner like me whose only touch with Chinese culture is through the shows and movies I've watched, the "highlighting" of this culture in this movie felt almost always off, or that it missed the mark in some way...And in the end, did we see all that much more Chinese culture than we did in the animation? The costumes, cinematography...it could've indulged in the glorious Chinese beauty and grace, but well...we know what happened.

AvenueX: Mulan wasn't even really Han Chinese. I don't think Westerners even bothered to look into it... Disney didn't even bother to look into Pocahontas's real life, which was NOT a legend but a REAL historical person in American History.. She was the first baptized Christian in North America, but it is portrayed as if she is a pagan her entire life. This is not true. She marries a man (NOT John Smith) and goes to England as a converted Christian. The sad news is they didn't even bother to keep Mulan's movie-accurate either, from a cultural perspective or a literary, they just wanted to make sure she did not fall in love with a man. Good ole Disney and Western writers. Not concerned about the original content for Pocahontas or Mulan. They will just make it up as they go along, I am NOT watching this show in protest. I LOVE the Disney Mulan animation because of the story, the music, and the strong female character overcoming odds for the love of her family (something the Chinese culture celebrates) but I am not interested in watching the current screening of Mulan. BTW, this is an excellent review.

To my knowledge, Northern Wei is highly sinicized. The emperor Xiaowen issued a number of edicts that made what was stated policy official law-that Xianbei clothing and language be prohibited, and that the Han clothing and language be used instead. He also ordered that the Xianbei family names be changed to Han ones, changing his own clan's name from Tuoba to Yuan. He also strengthened the social stratification that had already been underway for some time, making eight Xianbei clans and five Han clans particularly honored, and ordering that all political offices be given by clan status, not by abilities.

The color grading is jarring, the acting was only good with a few characters (Mulan herself isn't one), the CGI is comically bad, the writing is all over the place missing some key tropes and arcs to buyild a fulfilling arc and the directing+editing are a total nightmare on the fight scenes that were sould as amazing... full of close-ups and several cuts that break any tension from scenes that already lack stakes to behin with. This may seem insulting and I apologize for it but you're one of the few to acknowledge Mulan as legend and not historical accuracy (9:20-9:36). I understand why many Chinese audiences were upset with Disney. Although Mulan is a ballad, its not necessarily on historical fact, entertainment companies should respect a country's culture and customs in a film. For example, I am not Mexican but Disney were quite accurate with Coco. There's several versions of the ballad, entertainment companies have many liberties to explore the story of Mulan. Now, the feminism in Mulan 2020 killed me! As a woman, I felt humiliated and degraded by this film. Mulan 98 was the "Limp Noodle" of the group, which wasn't entirely her fault (Yao & Ling bullying her) but that's what made her training and transition so special and unique. In "Man out of You", instead of taking Sheng's rejection personally, Mulan grows tougher skin and begins to really apply herself (pillar scene), she becomes more of a critical thinker (especially mountain scene, ending), she works hard bc she's not there for approval but to protect her family. Mulan 2020 is actually a boring character bc she's born lucky....I would've loved it if Caro & Disney explored "Man out of you" bc its not just a song. it has a really good message to it, that would've been nice :) Feminism and Qi really bothered me in this film

legend no less but still traceable to the Northern Wei, a collection of fiefdoms which was ruled by Northerners who came from the steppes at one point like the Jin and Liao and Mongols almost a Millenia later, but had adopted Han mannerisms and even the language, yes the Yuan Mongols were not the first to adopt Han mannerisms; the Southern Han descendants were deemed benign and posed no threat unlike the Rou Ruan?or Rou Lan?another northern fiefdom. also China the land had never been ruled by any one ethnicity for very long each period but by whoever was more capable,until such time when local fiefdoms would ally themselves to something greater than themselves. so we come to the who done it part, since inevitably everyone in present day China who has finished middle school would know how bad the story was misconstrued, due in no small part to no one bothering to tell Disney Mulan wasn’t even Han Chinese by descent, when the Animated film debuted, seeing its the same background story, so they would take it as good grounds to start on for the live action film. with proliferation of internet sources, its a different world map now. Seeing how Teochew opera and HK kungfu flicks the past few decades had expanded on the subject of Mulan taking up arms instead of her father , I find it hard to fault Disney for thinking Mulan was of Han descent for I had that impression too.

I mean considering during the Northern Sri dynasty, while the imperial paternal line were Xianbei people, they lived Han culture lifestyles and actively sought to assimilate with the Hans. The Emperor literally forbade the speaking and writing of the Xianbei language and script and heavily encourage intermarriage with Hans, if I remember correctly, most if not all Northern Wei empresses were Han women. This actually caused a lot of resentment from some Xianbei nobility which planted the seeds to the eventual fall of Northern Wei.

The internal conflict would have been pretty easy to set up. Just have Mulan as a half xianbei more in tune with horse riding and archery than a settled lifestyle. The emperor in the original poem was referred to as Khan, which is a title Xianbei leaders carried into the Tang dynasty as a kind of cultural heritage even as they were princes under the Tang. At the time where the poem was set, which was likely the reign of emperor Taiwu, military service was still very prestigious, and soldiers tended to be less acculturated since they spent most of their time patrolling the frontiers. Those traditional skills were in high demand. The complete denigration of Xianbei tradition was most prominent in the very late period of Northern Wei, when the capital was moved back to the historic Luoyang. Prior to that earlier Tuoba leaders, while still leaning heavily towards assimilation, still maintained a relatively healthier civil-military balance. Needless to say, the civil war that ended Northern Wei started from the military.

Something that bothered me alot with film is the dialogue. Forget the fact that Disney went to all the trouble to have a Chinese cast in a weirdly colored Chinese setting only to not speak Chinese. :P The lines themselves are HORRIBLE. I can understand theatrics or formality, but what we got is just cringe. I was curious to see the perspective of a native Chinese on the film, and this video is the second one I've come across. Glad I found this vid, since it is the rare one that touched on the film being oriental for the sake of it despite claiming to be more realistic such as the village being out of place for its setting, or the neon bright colors in a period where such colors wouldn't exist. But, hey, doesn't matter if it looks fake and ugly, 'it looks Chinese, right?' And, yeah, previous video I watched, the reviewer lost his cool a few times given he was very much inspired by both the original ballad and the cartoon. He brought up the final line of the poem regarding the two hares running side by side being indistinguishable, and how Disney used that as a throwaway line. Like I said, he lost his cool in a few places. Oh, and thank you for giving me more reason to be wary of Netflix.

I agree with your sentiments. They should have either: done a remake of the animated version, gone full in for their made up magical version of ancient china, or have done an English remake of China's 2009 Hua Mulan.

As a visually orientated person, I just can’t stand the makeup, costumes and set designs in this film. Objectively ugly, by all human aesthetic standards.

The historical accuracy of Chinese dramas surpasses Disney. Disney not only misrepresented Chinese traditional clothing culture, but also made Arabs dance like Indians.

Did anyone else notice that they took out all the songs, but kept some of the lyrics as dialogue that was really awkward

The insertion of the “a girl worth fighting for” lyrics was cringey as hell and made the male soldiers seem disgustingly misogynist. at least in the animated film you could tell the music and lyrics were poking fun at that mindset.

从此替爷争。。。not 父。。。my teacher would beat me with a stick if I got it wrong...I don't think the history is super important in a fantasy...however...at least don't get it so obviously wrong...like the '有情人终成眷属’ on the door...that is from 元 dynasty...like 800 years later...I live in 燕山...you know, 燕山胡骑鸣啾啾...I was so looking forward for this movie...but this movie is sooooo bad...I have no idea who this movie made for...if this made for people love the cartoon, they should not have changed it so much from the cartoon..if this made for Chinese people, they should at least consult some Chinese people while they were making it....if this made for Children...they should make it fun...if this made for feminism, they should build some strong female characters...they did nothing above... BTW, I growing up with the TV show 花木兰 with 袁咏仪 and 赵文卓,焦恩俊,孙兴...I love that show...

超喜欢他们四个人的花木兰!我也是小学的时候看的!还记得孙兴有一幕叫了一声"焦恩俊!"然后导演还在片子里留下来了 超好笑哈哈哈哈

@LaVerdadEsMuyCatólica western feminist propaganda? Even feminists don't like this movie lol. Disney has actually completely removed the original female empowerment of the original animation, and basically said "this woman can only be equal to men by using her natural born superpowers." So fuck all the other women I guess. No no, don't blame the feminists for this one. This is purely Disney's braindead attempt to tap into ancient chinese mysticism just for the novelty.

@Damma Venenosa If you mean Li Shang, they replaced him with a different man. But Li Shang is a pretty beloved love interest, because of his genuine respect for Mulan, his character growth, and their chemistry. He has better chemistry with Mulan than like...90% of Disney couples. Removing him wasnt a "win" for feminism, actually if you check most reviews his removal was mostly met with confusion. Most self described feminists actually really like Li Shang. Disney made the weird decision based on the me too movement, saying a love interest for mulan being in a position of power over her was "uncomfortable". but that argument doesn't even make any sense. Li Shang was nothing but supportive and respectful of Mulan, and they didn't develop a romantic relationship until after he was no longer her commanding officer. Once again, not a feminist win. Just bad decision making lol.

"it's ugly" thank you. As someone who watches Chinese dramas that can be possible references, and the fact that it's so accessible, it's upsetting they couldn't be bothered to research. It's so disappointing.

I'm mexican and when i was a little like in the 2010 my uncle worked in a movie rental and he give me and my sis movies that he think we could like (cause my sis and i are always be history nerds so they were alot of documentaries)one of those was an actual chinese movie of Mulan (it was a color but old like from the 60s-70s) so having that movie as a point of start of comparison for both disney movies make both weird to me (the animated at least always give me a good time)
