It's always great to do things like this for a great Mothers Day present. My wife and I extended her mother's vegetable garden and completely cleaned up her flower beds. Doing it yourself really gives it a personal touch and expresses how much you appreciate them. It would have been a lot easier if I had a bank of bags, employed help and an endless choice of what to put in. The dream world of KZfaq, sponsors out the ying yang, really shows what you can do if ya got it.

5 years ago I helped my sister and her husband mulch their foundation plantings. We put down a layer of cardboard before adding the mulch. Even to this day there are very few weeds coming up. Cardboard mulching is wonderful! The only time I’ve had a problem with it was at my own house where I had mare’s tail weed. It punched through the cardboard. Everything else was suppressed. I finally had to use a commercial grade landscape fabric. Live and learn!

Before you said some of the compost was wet I wondered is something wrong with Laura's eyes today LOL. I thought thats 2 different colors of compost...what?!? 😅 what a nice treat for Aaron's mom! Made everything look so great!

The only thing that would make those newly mulched beds even spiffier would be a sharp and deep English edge to all the beds. Edging makes every bed look so much more lush and 'finished'.

Every year for many, many years my Mother's Day gift has been my husband and kids doing some heavy gardening for me. That's all I've wanted. My older son is now married and moved to another state but my younger son and husband still do this for me. Sometimes it's digging and reworking a flower bed but for the past number of years it's primarily adding compost or mulch depending on the year. It's such a wonderful gift because it's hard work. We buy bulk and use a wheelbarrow to then shovel it all over. Once it's done the beds look so good and it definitely is motivating. I am very blessed.

Here I am... 78 years old... hauling bags of mulch from HD and spreading them. YIKES... what a blessing for Aaron's Mom! I'm on bag # 9... with many to go... can't even imagine the # of bags you went through!!!!!

The very first video I ever watched of yours was the one where you made the corner bed by the hydrant, and I've been hooked ever since! I watched to learn how to edge a bed and I learned to garden.

Due to cost we have resorted to using all the pine mulch that we have in our yard, but I so wish we could use something darker. It looks so nice.
