I'm a city boy bred and raised, an environmentalist and believe in treating animals with care. This is a terrific video showing a traditional use of mules used today. These animals are bred for this kind of work and it's true they thrive when they work and are bored when they don't. Thanks for sharing this video.

Is it my imagination or are the mules who are doing the heavy work getting stopped so the man can catch his breath?

My grandpa used to do this , he would have 7 er 8 mules at a time, and so did all of his brothers

if you can figure out where to get the mules, i am sure when your in the mule store, they could hook you up with mule accessories

ever consider making them a sled for the front of the logs? I would think it would really help them.

I wonder if a wheeled arc could be implemented into the process?

@apache4541 Mules work better on rough terrain.. A mule uses their front feet for most of the pulling power while a horse's pulling strength mostly comes from the rear legs. This allows the mule to be more agile in tighter areas. Like tvick said, it's mostly tradition now, but there is a reason for it. I've worked both animals since I was a kid and mules are far better for working in 'tough' areas. The Amish don't use them though because they believe that breeding horses with burrows is wrong.
