I really like Janeway as a character. I think of all the Captains in Star Trek, she was the most unique. She was a very strong woman and she had to be a strong captain to face being lost in the Delta Quadrant (potentially forever) and trying to protect her crew and get them home. Over the course of the series she gained my respect.

3:00 I had to clap at that moment. I'm a big fan of Star Trek: Voyager, and nobody could have pulled off Kathryn Janeway better than she, at least not in my mind, not even Meryl Streep. Her voice, her manner, her inner strength....; if I were serving on a ship in uncharted waters, I would want a level-headed captain like Captain Janeway in charge.

She was wonderful as Mary on RYAN'S HOPE. When she left, headwriters Claire LaBine and Paul Mayer wanted to kill the character becuase in their eyes, only Mulgrew could do the character justice. Sadly, ABC made them recast the role (twice) before they realized the same thing.

always liked her - I think her distinctive and lower voice helped (if only subconsciously) assure people she wouldn't be at all "prissy" - though sometimes I think they worried about it too much and took it too far, ie were afraid to let her be feminine enough in her demeanor, if that makes any sense. she worked out so well though, as did the series overall.

Star Trek made a lot of firsts for everyone. First united nations in space all working together, the first interracial kiss, the first plausible ideas written for Star Trek and later made a reality, the first burial in space for Gene Roddenberry and the first female captain for a tv show. I believe that without Star Trek I would've been a different person today. And as for Kate, "I don't dare disappoint someone who can manage such a feat." - Montgomery Scott :RIP

I grew up with her as captain Janeway and I really admired Captain Janeway when I was a boy. Back then I didn't think much of it, but now I can see what an amazing character the writers and Kate Mulgrew created. Compare this with this Mary Sue type lazy character we now get presented as "strong female character" in STD... Janeway was a strong character, principled, smart but also with her flaws and faced with an extraordinary challenge that played perfectly to the strength and weaknesses of the character. There are many flaws with Voyager of course, but it's still my favorite Star Trek show, even if I can recognize the flaws the show had.

I always detect a little irony mixed with white-knuckled professionalism in her way of portraying Janeway. It was, and is still a fresh wind watching her. I can understand that her somewhat whispering voice sometimes seems overdoing it, but in the long run, Mulgrew builds such a solid captaincy that no other Star Trek captain has come close to, in close collaboration with rest of the stellar cast.

Someday I want to write to Ms. Mulgrew to tell her how seeing a woman at the helm of a starship when I was a child inspired me to get over my own gender neuroses to pursue a career in a male-dominated field as a pastor--a career I can already tell I'm going to love. It just meant so much growing up to see such a strong, yet sensitive role model on the screen. I'm Janeway for Halloween this year,a nd there's nothing pagan about it.

The shoulder thing lol is something a lot of the fans are aware of and its cool to see someone recognize it.
