Thank you. This will work for me! Funny how a simple idea can make ones work run so smooth. It doesn't have to be as difficult and dangerous as I was imagining in my head :-) Appreciate this!

I love this method! What a great idea to save time, and also a way to work on something on the days you're feeling uninspired...just mix up the oils to prepare for the day you're ready to make soap. Thank you!

When I get my garage cleaned out and a counter and cabinets set up I will do this, but for right now the only thing I am ‘batching’ is my lye solution the night before. Just doing that has saved me so much time.

Thank you for the great ideas, and container suggestions! I've been enjoying making smaller batches lot late, but they're a little less word than a bigger batch...but using the master batch with your favourite recipe makes things faster, and neater...

Hello, this is a great idea. Can't believe it took till now to stumble upon this video. Talk about making life easy!!!! I do have a question though.....you took your oils/butters and X times 5 which I was right with you. Got that but when you did the water and lye, you lost me. How come you only X'd it by 2??? If I took the water of 342 grams and lye of 124.61 grams and weighted each container to have 342 water and then mix 124.61(or close to) of lye would that be okay for each batch because you lost me when you did X 2.......lol

....and then my entire life was simplified.... I will definitely be masterbatching my oils. However, I won’t be masterbatching my lye bc I hardly ever use water, I always use beer, milk, heavy cream, aloe, etc... I know about the 50/50 rule but I’ll just measure out my lye... but my soaping Time was just cut in HALF... thank you Amanda!!!!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips. I guess these Rubbermaid containers are more difficult to find in 2022. I finally found them at Dollar General (what a misnomer), and the Ziplock ones on Amazon. This will save all that dishwashing and (sometimes; okay most times) the mess up, THEN the 2 hr. clean up. 😞 I love your multiple batch tip 🙂!

In a decent plastic container you should be able to store the lye for months/years. In my chemistry labs they store concentrated sodium hydroxide solution (which is what lye is made of) in plastic tubs with a plastic tab for dispensing

They last indefinitely. It's just lye water. It's not going to change or become something else. I make five tons of soap each year, and I don't 50/50 batch. I do the full ratio and store it in HDPE plastic cat litter jugs (cleaned very thoroughly). Our batches are around 25 pounds each (four logs), which comes to 64 bars. On nice days I'll make a couple extra batches of lye water, then store it for rainy, sleety or snowy days, or when it's 20 below zero (or if I'm just lazy or in a hurry). I've stored lye batches for weeks and it works just fine.

You said not to make lye solution in glass, companies that sell the lye say use heat resistant glass or plastic. Why do you not suggest using glass. I am new to soap making and went with the recommended glass, a coffee pot, heat resistant enough for coffee, would you say this is not safe for making lye solution? I’m not being snarking, I’m trying to learn.

I have always made sodium hydroxide solutions (lye) in glassware in chemistry labs. With proper glassware (ie. no cracks), mixing lye in glass should never be an issue

Oh wow, I didn't know that you're not supposed to mix lye in glass containers. I've been specifically using my pyrex containers to mix my lye 😥 -- On her website she says that the lye can etch and shatter glass.
@tiffmcevoy5581
@tiffmcevoy5581 5 жыл бұрын
Mixing lye in glass should not be an issue provided you have proper glassware, always make sure there's no cracks. Invest in some lab grade beakers if you're worried (shouldn't be too expensive if you find the right source). I would prefer to use a pyrex jug over some plastics as not all plastics are designed to handle heat

This Master Batching looks so laboursome. Why don’t you pour the calculated oils into a 1 Gallon container and pour out what you need for your recipe when ready for your one loaf. And pour all the Lye solutions calculated and mixed up into another Gallon? Then pour out what you need when ready for that loaf. So much repetition here, containers, and clean up! I’m sure there are ways to be even more efficient than this .... four years on! Thanks anyway.
