Greg Judy and his wife Jan run a successful 1400 acre livestock grazing operation in Missouri founded on the principles of holistic, high density, planned grazing that results in sustainable lush forage. Greg willingly shares the “how-to” of his operation through public speaking and writing to enable others to create a successful business based on his grazing techniques. This is Greg’s FIRST TIME IN CANADA!

Founded in 2012, the “Practical Farmers of Ontario” (PFO) includes a diverse group of over 200 farmers and friends of farmers. Field crops, beef cattle, dairy (raw milk), hog, lamb and poultry are the top enterprises for PFO farmers, although many have other operations, including fruits and organic vegetables. Our non-farmer members believe that practical farmers can provide multiple benefits to society, including local food security and sound, sustainable farming practices.

Every time I hear Greg Judy speak I gain so much information. He has a unique way of really keeping a persons interest. So knowledgeable and to the point. After studying many Farmers who do rotational grazing, Greg is the best i've heard.

Love Greg Judy and his style of farming. I hope to lease some land next year and work towards his style of farming full time here in Alberta.

On parasite resistance in wool sheep - Yes! Wool sheep can be selected for parasite resistance. Several island breeds that had been left to fend for themselves developed excellent parasite resistance. These breeds, including those either descended from, or that had Merino added to them, also developed so that they do not require crutching (as there was no one around to do it for a hundred years or more!). These breeds are hard to find, and might need to be refined a bit for the wool - depending on your market and what kind of wool they want.

Many breeds of sheep won't breed in the summertime. However, most will breed in Sept and definitely by October, which meant lambs will arrive in February or March. In most areas April or May works better with forage availability.

Many lines of Pyrs have had their instincts diluted by being raised as pets and/or show dogs. Being raised, even born, among sheep and other livestock is helpful- if the mother and any other LGDs on the property are solid dogs and will not let the pups chase or try to play with the livestock. I know of a number of Pyrs successfully guarding livestock- that stay with the herd and don't run off and do a great job.

I really like Greg Judy. I read his books and watch his videos often, but there is a mistake he keeps repeating that I feel inclined to correct him on. I've worked at the Deseret Ranch, and it's in Florida not in Utah. The Mormon church owns ranches in Utah but the Deseret Ranch isn't there. It's not a million acres, it's about 350 thousand, but I heard they've sold part of it for development a few years ago. The bird watching isn't by far the largest source of income, but it's the cleanest source, meaning there is little investment and maintenance cost for the amount of revenue it brings. I don't know if this information will ever reach him so if someone could forward it would be much appreciated. By the way, the largest source of income for the Deseret Ranch has always been cattle. It's primarily a cow/calf operation. However, they have been very fortunate to have had great managers over the years that explore many different sources of revenue. It's a fantastic place to visit if you are ever in the Orlando area (about 45 minute drive from the airport). There are missionaries there that can take you on guided tours.

Hi Robert, Greg is referring to Deseret Land and Livestock, which is a ranch in Utah also LDS owned. It's pretty common to hear it referred to as just Deseret ranch around here. I see the confusion though. That's neat you got to work on the Deseret Ranches in Florida. www.audubon.org/important-bird-areas/deseret-land-and-livestock-ranch-ut10

Some breeds of wool sheep have short hair on their heads, lower legs, and the britch area, and little wool on the bellies. No need to crutch these.
