In today's video we're going to learn the story of Marussia - the first supercar / sports car made in Russia. Russia and the ex USSR are famous for creating such legendary cars as the Lada and others, but Russian cars have never been taken super seriously in the West. That has changed: a young Russian car brand called Marussia made a lot of noise in the late 2000s and early 2010s, being a huge success at foreign motor shows and appearing in Western video games such as Need for Speed and DriveClub. Marussia seemed like an upcoming success story, but at one point it all came crashing down. Let's examine why.

And unfortunately, the Marussia F1 Team had a driver named Jules Bianchi, who sadly passed in 2015. He crashed into a recovery tractor during the 2014 Japanese GP, and died a year later. The company folded right after his accident. RIP Jules

Actually Marussia F1 team never got a top 10 placement so they scored 0 points except the Monte Carlo race in their 4th and final year in F1. They got 9th place and scored 2 points.

Also important to note that competing under a Russian flag is different from being a Russian team. Basically it just meant that Marussia was its title sponsor at that time, the team itself however was British. It was based in Banbury, UK and competed from 2010 to 2014 under different names. So yeah, sponsoring an outsider might be a questionable move, but the failures of the Marussia F1 team had nothing to do with the Marussia car manufacturer and at least it made the brand somewhat more recognizable.

Fun facts about its F1 journey : The Marussia F1 team still managed to score 1 point in 2014's Monaco GP with Jules Bianchi, and is the only team entering the championship in 2010 to have scored a point and to have last 5 seasons (HRT 2010-12, Caterham 2010-14 and both 0 point). Scoring a point in F1 means being placed 10th at the end of the race, so in 5 years they barely achieved it.

I was just talking about the Marussia car company with a friend a week ago. We wondered if they were still around today, and now the rest of the story has been revealed. I think the concept was viable, and the cars had potential in today’s bloated super car market. Everyone wants to stand out when you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a car, and the B2 was definitely a standout at what could arguably be a bargain price. The idea of starting a formula 1 team was great for marketing even if they never had a podium finish. There’s a glut of billionaires in Russia today, so we may see another super car coming from Russia even if it won’t have the Marussia name.

Making high priced things for the Russian market is a terrible business decision.

It's actually not. Russia has an increadible level of income inequality with a large percent of families unable to efford even some basic KIA or Honda, but those who have the money (mainly government officials, their friends and families, oil and natural resourse tycoons with a tiny portoin of IT-businesmen and other non-state business owners) have them in abundance. You see, Russia is a hypercentralised country with center of Moscow looking more like Milan or Paris and the other cities looking like houses vere not repainted (let alone repaired) since the Soviet times. So yeah, there are several thousands wealthy people in Russia, despite everyone else being poor or extremely poor. I mean, even in Moscow most jobs don't pay more then 1000$ before tax (closer to 700 really) and in provicial towns it can get as low as 300$ per month.

I first saw the Marussia B2 in Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012 and I was immediately in love with its design. To this day, I still think it’s one the best looking cars ever built. At almost 20 years old, it still looks modern and absolutely classic at the same time. The body design is absolutely timeless for a sports car and it’s a tragedy that this company crashed and burned the way it did.

It baffles me to this day how Russia can make some of the most sophisticated machines ever made like airliners and jets while failing so hard with cars.
@jakekaywell5972

Reason for that is that cars are goods typically made for private ownership. Therefore, there simply wasn't a whole lot of incentive to make them the best things in the world. Soviet/Russian were durable, simple, and easy to fix and that was all that really mattered.

Only thing with the Nissan combo is reliability and being able to be serviced and repair at any Nissan dealer (drive train), that in itself is a good thing. Cutting a half second on 0-100kph and slightly higher top speed probably wouldn't be worth it. Than again it would enhance credence to the car.

Hey can you tell us how russias mood on putin is right now? I think he is really low in popularity and people are sick of him. Also that a lot of people are waking up and seeing that he is extremely corrupt. Do you think this will be his last term? And what realistic alternatives does Russia have?

Well, I didn't expect you being a car guy, Roman. This channel keeps being better and better in my eyes! Very well documented and well made video, as usual ! Back in 2010, I didn't even care about this brand (even being into Eastern cars) as there were so many supercar brands emerging and disappearing, so thanks for the refresh ! Also, I'm very interested in the Touring Car-specced Lada 21009s footage starting at 3:25... What's the context, manufacturer championship ? Can I get the source ? Do you know about the MPM PS160 & Erelis ? The second life of the TagAZ Aquila in France. Sadly, MPM pulled the plug in december, thanks to no help or consideration by French governement, not really into cars, except for their "Big Three" Peugeot, Citroën and Renault... They really did well, even managing to grow from zero a dealer network through Western Europe. Could have been something.

The Marussia B2 has been a car I was fascinated with. Not only for being pretty much the only Russian car that I’ve seen at the time that was not only NOT a Soviet-era shitbox like a Lada or Volga but, a full-blown Supercar. Also, for the first few years it was around it was a ubiquitous sight in pretty much every racing game at the time. Think of any car game that came out between 2012-2014 and the B2 was probably in it, making its debut in Need for Speed Most Wanted (2012) then later in NFS Rivals, Asphalt 8, NFS World, and Driveclub. But after 2014 the B2 disappeared from media. No games since had ever featured it and all of the games I mentioned except for Rivals are now delisted or in the case of Asphalt 8 removed the car from an update likely due to licensing issues. Sadly, pretty much the only real way to experience this car now to either buy NFS Rivals or get a second-hand physical copy of Driveclub or NFS Most Wanted 2012. Tragic really, a unique car with a unique origin quickly tossed aside and forgotten.

As a long time fan of AAA racing games, there actually is a method of getting into such games. Your car has to look exotic and impressive, be something that makes someone do a double take, and appeal to young minds. The B2 fit that. Thing is though that even if you get in a game doesn't mean you will live long. Great example is Carbon Motors. Their car the E7 appeared in NFS HP 2010 and really stood out. But in the end the thing barely existed.
