Multitronic Oil Change - (a bit of a faff...!)

I finally got hold of an oil service socket for the Audi, which means I can now change the gearbox oil. No idea when it was last changed, so let's see what condition it's in! We haven't had any problem with the gearbox - this is just regular maintenance.
Changing the multitronic oil is a bit of a pain - there's no filler from the engine bay - it all has to take place underneath the car - what a faff! So up it goes again on the jack stands and I squeeze back into my overalls... By the way - I did top up the level properly with the engine running, I just did it off camera. The final level check/top-up is always done with the engine running.
Thanks for watching and subscribing!

@sm7091bs

@@ln5747 the update is that the engine gave up due to a bad timing chain tensioner. Drove to long with it knowing it should be replaced. But in the workshop it went wrong with cranking the engine. The chain Jumped. Engine failure…. In the meantime we bought a simulair Audi A6 3.2L with a multitronic again. Lower on the mileage (236.000km) but also replaced the standard filter into the magnefine filter and changed the differential oil (1,3L) i also use a additive in the multironic from (Polytron) what is available in the USA
@ln5747
@ln5747 Жыл бұрын
@@sm7091bs thanks for the reply. What mileage did you get the first one to? Also, I presume by the sounds of it it was a petrol/gasoline engine, not diesel, given it had timing chain? My multitronic is at 115k miles, it concerns me given what people say but I've had no issues and plenty seem to have good experiences with them.
@sm7091bs
@sm7091bs Жыл бұрын
@@ln5747 i believe the engine failed at 397.000km due to my own fault. It is very important with the multitronic to change the oil. 60.000km is the interval. I would suggest to do it a little earlier. I am a car mechanic for 35 years so I maintain it by myself. But google on a magnefine inline filter. The original one what is fitted near the radiator on the right side seen from the driving position should be cut off through the aluminum line’s . This one was also fitted in the other A6. And the additive Polytron MTC was also added to the oil inside the multitronic and differential. This product is really a big benefit for the longer life of the multitronic. If you need more info i could give you my e-mail adress. The car was by the way a petrol car. Even the “new” one is a petrol
@ln5747
@ln5747 Жыл бұрын
@@sm7091bs thanks for the info. I would be happy with 397k. Mine is 2.0tdi which generally seem to last longer than the petrol. Thanks for the offer, but hopefully that will be enough info and I will speak to my mechanic. Should most dealers/specialists be aware of what you suggested? I have had my gearbox oil changed at 80k miles (unsure if it got done at 40k by previous owner) and about to have it done again. I will keep doing it every 40k miles as Audi recommends. But I shall look at these extra recommendations you suggest. I can see the engine lasting a long time and everything else. The one thing that will fail and probably write the car off would be the multitronic if it fails. Would maybe not be worth fixing. So I will look after it as I still love the car and have no desire for a new one.

In other automatic gearbox like a tiptronic, there wil always be old oil left in the converter. I have always change the oil 3-4 times in those cases and runed the car throu all gear betwin each oil shift while the car is up on the lift. Is this also necessary to multitronic to change all the oil?

Fairly thorough. What car are you working on?....Audi...? Looking to do a 2011 2.7 V6. What is the trans' capacity? Does doing what you did get all the 'old' ATF out?... With a Merecedes (e.g.) you have to drain the torque converter as well as the sump as the sump only holds about 3.5L whereas full g.box capacity is 8L. I have seen people with their demo's on KZfaq doing MB auto' trans' putting 3L of new ATF into 5L of remaining dirty ATF after just draing g.box sump. Thank you

Isn't the safest procedure after refilling to 1. let it drain to correct level 2. run engine a short time, and go through gear selections, turn off . 3. check and ensure fluid is still at correct level.4. warm up the transmission 5. drain it back to correct level when at correct temperature.

It seems based on the number of Multi CVT failures on the Audi A6 B6 you're suspicions on Long Life oil aren't entirely unfounded (esp as Audi themselves suggest the 60km oil change). However interesting thing is, when i've spoken to two Audi dealers about how much oil is required to refill both Audi dealers replied with 7.5 litres. Interesting that you suggest only 5.5l is required (does make a cost difference)

Hi When you first remove the plug for the fill and level drain, a lot of fluid came out and you said this was great, or correct. So, if the engine was cold, and the fluid not expanded, shouldn't no fluid come out when the engine is cold?
@christianp9128
@christianp9128 2 жыл бұрын
Reason for this happening is because the fluid is sitting at the bottom of the transmission and pan. Level should be above the drain tube. Once the transmission starts and circulates the fluid trough the gears and rest of the transmission, the level should be slightly below the fill tube. The reason you need the proper temperature of the fluid is due to the termal properties of the fluid. You want to have just the right amount of fluid in there until it starts running out trough the plug. Remember yiu always check transmission fluid on vehicles with the car running always for this reason.

Are you sure you have a cvt? I don’t recall any A3 8Ps having them. They usually had the Aisin gearbox which was prone to sticking solenoids.The process is pretty much the same - you only have one plug and the filter needs to be changed which means removing the oil pan - check online for more details and the correct oil and procedures. An oil change might help a lot, a flush would be better. (Or 2-3 oil changes with short drives in between!).

This kind of gearbox does not allow for "normal" filling. The fluid has to be pumped back in through the sump plug as shown. Also, in order to get the correct level, the procedure must be followed, including reaching the correct temperature, when the final level is adjusted (with the engine running)! It's complicated, but it's the only way!

What could be the fault? Is it because i drove it until it ran out of oil or becouse they didn't do a proper job? ( the coolant pipes broke down as well)

Hi got 2013 Audi A5 2TFSI after Grarbox service from Audi I start having problem where cars is start jerking when moving from p to dive or when it’s move from stationary position and it’s Rav needles starting flickering as well when doing this Any idea what’s goes wrong was reading different forum says it’s happen when adaption not done or oil is old . Please help on this ?

That does not sound good. If Audi performed the service, you must go back to have them rectify the situation. There is definitely something wrong! Did you have similar problems before the service?

But when all is said and done, why does Audi put you through this? A gravity feed is so much easier. I had an Audi 5000 back when, and loved it. Beautiful driving cars. But they don't have the longevity of Hondas and Toyotas, which is all I can afford (old ones at that) in my modest retirement.

Thank you for the clear video, although one thing I don't get. When draining the oil from the filling hole, more oile came out then when you checked the oil level after finishing the oilchange. Does this means there was to much oil inside gearbox? I thought checking the oil level should be done with the engine running? (2002 c5 01J)

He set the oil level wrong, he supposed to have the car running between 95-113 f degrees then set the level, that transmission needs at least 1.5 quarts more

@@satt4603 wow thats a lot of volume difference you estimate. You got that wrong, its only going to be up to a pint different due to wrong temperature. However you got it wrong. All Audi gearbox oil changes are similar, but check online for the correct oil specifications and procedures. The earlier cvt boxes were slightly different.

Surely the first plug you took out was the drain as that much shouldn’t come out when you fill it and it’s “full”?

Gartshore's Garage thanks a lot for this video, i just subscribed to your channel... Born in France, studied in US, UK and Germany and now living in the madness of South Africa driving a stunning A4 B8 2010... I cannot find a reliable place to change the multitronic GB oil.. Any tips about the software you used? Where to purchase the pump and more importantly, if it is the same access plugs for an A4 B8 from 2010? Tnx for your video 👍🏻

Hi, thanks for subscribing! The software is VCDS used via a Ross Tech interface. It’s not cheap, but it’s basically the same system used by most professionals. As for getting the oil changed - there are bound to be a few good techs around - check out your local forums! I bought my pump on eBay, there are plenty on offer around the world. As for the plugs on your gearbox - you’ll have to get down there and have a look! Most were the 01J model. Good luck!

It is not any worse than changing any other sealed transmission fluid. Just get the correct fluid and don't be cheap about that then you should be fine. The DSG MUST be done every 40,000 miles or sooner. There is a filter up top under the battery tray. There are some vids on doing this too.
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Yep - Charles is right - it can be done by yourself quite easily - just follow the instructions and buy good quality oil. Liqui Moly is very good and can always be recommended if it's available in your area. Just make sure it's the right specification for your gearbox.

@@GartshoresGarage I have a 09G but I have also considered using Liqui Moly ATF in that too. That would be Top Tec 1800 for 2nd gen 09G. Top Tech 1200 for 1st gen.

Was there not a oil filter to change in the gearbox like the S4?
@lynxstarautomotive208
@lynxstarautomotive208 3 жыл бұрын
Multi-tronic is VW’s name for the CVT. The CVT uses an internal screen (like some Hondas) which is only accessible by dropping the unit and cracking it open. There is a filter inline on the cooler line, but not everyone bothers to change it. The official repair info only calls for a drain and refill.

Good evening, congratulations on the video. My Audi is the A4 1.8 T gasoline model year 2005, automatic transmission (CVT). Is this car you are exchanging the same model as mine? If it's not the same as my car, can you recommend a video that teaches how to change the oil. Thank you in advance, thank you very much.
@GartshoresGarage
@GartshoresGarage 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. While the procedure would normally be the same for most VW/Audi CVT gearboxes, please check the manufacturer specifications, especially regarding the correct oil. Things change over the years and it's always important to check the exact specifications and techniques for your own vehicle. If you're doing it yourself and have any questions, always ask a professional - I'm just an amateur working on my own private vehicles!
