At 16:00, Master Rang paused. And I knew then when he did, that he was reliving an extremely painful but memorable part of his life. Some of us go through an extreme journey at some point in our lives, and we are only so lucky to be alive today. I know that feeling, and when Master Rang went silent, I heard everything his heart said so loud, and so clear. You're a good man, Rang.

@@pullupullupullup4687 my mom ended up in Malaysia after she fled on the boat and eventually made it Switzerland and shortly after California. I don't doubt that Rang made pit stops on the way. But hey, most Vietnamese immigrants have their own stories of what happened. Growing up as a Vietnamese-American and hearing countless stories from relatives and family friends of how our parents and other families made the trek is hard. Vietnamese people deal with trauma and the tragedy of having to leave your home behind because you're afraid of the communist reform. The main goal for many Vietnamese people were to get to American Soil in any way possible. Rang explaining about grabbing the boat and "heading towards the sun" was essentially Rang's way of saying that many of the Vietnamese citizens of Ca Na knew of a way out where the Americans would be willing to assist them. The route being "go towards the sun" Who knows what really could have happened. I'm thinking Rang's stolen boat made it to the Americans (base of operations in a southern part of vietnam) for him to be able to escape. He obviously didn't use that small boat to get across the pacific and around to Newfoundland. But it's stories like these that remind me of the struggles many Vietnamese immigrants had to face in order to keep their ideologies and not to submit to communism. Sorry long rant but just wanted to maybe shed some light on Rang's explanantion.

@@pullupullupullup4687 my mother was a boat person like him. Similar story. They usually just hope that they get picked up by some western ship or neighboring country. My mother had it "easy" and got to the US after leaving on boat but my father spent some time in refugee camps first. Both had nothing but the clothes on their backs when they left and were out of all resources by the time they got picked up. I believe the dude, it's a pretty common story.
@richbrook101
@richbrook101 3 жыл бұрын
@@Noitora22 No one forces you to submit to communism, you can either stay or go and the Vietnamese government deliberately ignore those boat people trying to escape. Around 80% of those boat people are actually of Chinese descent even though they carry Vietnamese names as the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 1979 made the Chinese Vietnamese suspects of treason. Read up history, it wasn't always about politics. There are a lot of people from the South Vietnam regime who chose to stay and became very successful with houses in the most expensive and desirable area in Saigon. You're just hearing one side of the story.

16:01 when Rang stops talking for a brief second I feel like he's getting choked up thinking about to the intensity of his experiences stealing a boat, looking at it from the same spot 2-3 decades later...

Exactly what I thought. It was only once he said it out loud, is when he realized it. I don’t think he was choking up, but more of like a “warp speed” effect, where your mind, vision, and everything just goes *wsshhhh* by you, and you’re instantly grounded into your reality and what you’re actually doing, and where you actually are, and what happened. Amazing and beautiful.

This show is amazing. It has everything, two great friends' stories, great food knowledge, and not a script. If you ever worked in hospitality and were close to those workers in the back of the house, you can really appreciate and somehow see yourself in those stories. Great job people.

This relationship dynamic is equal parts love and respect. The way Matty appreciates the mentorship of Master Rang is beautiful. There's such a trade off, especially when Rang is in his element, and Matty's openness to his teachings is something I think we can all learn from.
