Through her project La TropiKitchen, Stephanie Bonnin makes handcrafted Colombian food and sells it from her apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Before COVID-19, Stephanie hosted pop-ups and dinner parties, but since the start of the pandemic, she's sold her arepas, enyucados, bollos, pasteles, and more directly from her bedroom window. Stephanie travels throughout Colombia to learn from local women about her country's varying culinary histories, from the Andes to the Amazon to major cities, then she takes this knowledge back to New York.

When I was a kid in Brooklyn there was a Puerto Rican lady who who sold homemade meals out of her apartment. No one said anything to the authorities about it. Everyone from the neighborhood (which was mostly Italian) loved her cooking. When I left New York she was still doing it. That was forty years ago.

For everyone thinking that this video is going to get her evicted or shut down, FALSE. Stephanie moved last month to Europe to attend another renowned culinary school to further hone her skills. What she's doing is typical in Colombia, many of our citizens make and sell food from home. I'm not saying that one way is right or wrong, I'm just pointing out that she's making Colombian food accessible in a culturally competent way. The people complaining are the same ones who would spend $5k on a trip to India but only eat at their hotel's buffet because the street food is "dirty". We all have different acceptable levels of risk and as a Colombian who has bought food from Stephanie before, I don't regret any of those tamales one bit!
@Lizabeth90

Further proof that she’s doing for the love of food and to build her skills. That’s probably why she did this video. Also she’s barely even cooking in her kitchen. Looks like she’s doing it mostly at the community kitchen and just reheating and prepping at her house. No different than picking up home made from from your parents house.

Most of Africa "traditional cooking " is done in leaves. We cut off a banana stem and place the leaves over a hot fire ( too soften them ) and the leaves is now a vessel for cooking pastel in. The same thing in Mexicano culture with tamales .
