In the first part of Huang's World: Shanghai, Eddie ventures into the heart of the city where he meets with Qiuxiang Wang, a humble street food vendor working to live in the city on her own terms. He spends time in her home, where she's constantly making grilled skewers, then grabs a midnight snack at a popular nighttime market and gets a glimpse into what life is like for those trying to keep homegrown markets alive.

Huang's world is currently one of my favorite things to watch on youtube, he offers a unique and sometimes funny view on cultures, while still stating meaningful opinions about lifestyle each episode. Not to mention awesome food with accurate and professional descriptions. Keep em' coming!

***** The show is originally called Fresh off the Boat.. and had more content in the original versions that were uploaded on the original VICE channel.. but once eddie sold his soul and got a deal for major Television they had to rename the show to something other than fresh off the boat.. so they renamed it huangs world and uploaded it to VICE's other food channel : Munchies. Eddie's show inspired me to move to china and learn chinese..now i am living in Chengdu and i really enjoy it.

I have so much respect for that woman. This right here is why no one should ever look at street vendors with condescending eyes or with pity. Because despite being a shitton poorer than most people, they might be happier, more fulfilled, and wiser despite a lack of college education. I don't think there's such thing as success coming from money, they're completely unrelated. And believing it probably leads to an unfulfilling life.

Tomas Ferreira but that really depends on where you live. If youre living in China its a totally accepted lifestyle that will be fulfilling and joyful. But if you live a Western country you're treated like a scum of the lowest tier

As a Chinese I really appreciate Eddie and his crew`s work there, they did a good job digging into the local life of each city. I don't wanna see any of those fancy shit in today`s Shanghai, that means nothing to people.

i know this comment is super old but just wanted to respond: as a westerner, i love how he can show us this side of cuisine that you'd really never see unless you went there and got right into it and i know there's probably some detractors but i feel he's as close as you can get to authentic without being from shanghai...

This is what I love about traveling: seeing the locals and how they live. I remember walking through the streets of Tijuana and the sections of Mexico City where tourists don't normally go and just observing as I'm passing through, witnesses the similarities and contrasts between their lives and mine. It's always eye-opening.

I get what Eddie tried to convey with this episode. As a westerner I visited Shanghai for the first time this year. Its obviously how fast this city is growing and building. At the same time there is a huge divide between working class and middle class, let alone upper class. I got tired of seeing modern Shanghai, I didn't came for that to China. Unfortunately, it was around NYE so impossible to travel across the country. Buy I went to the old district and outside the city centre where you can still see what real China is all about, eating for 10 yuan a 3 course meal. Meeting local people who don't speak a word of English. It gave me a great feeling getting to know locals and real Chinese culture. Will go back to explore more.

I disagree. She may be good spirited and friendly and all but let's be honest here she's fuckin ugly she's got a butterface with buck tooth and everything. She's not even average looking. And if she is your ideal beauty of a woman you seriously have low standards in a woman. Matching up with the ideal woman to be your wife she's got to have the whole package. Because why settle for anyone and have a shitty and unhappy marriage? And fuck being P.C. with this whole beauty is in the eye of the beholder crap, let's not fuckin kid ourselves of what we are genuinely attracted to. Biology always draws the final factor in human attraction and mating.

Another good episode. That lady was really nice. She was a workaholic but only the sense that she needs to work long hours to feed her family as earnings are pretty low vs time spent. Spending 2 hours in the restaurant with Huang just means no income.

Such a good show. I enjoyed it so much. I like the way how this video presents how underrepresented or marginalized people live. Actually these marginalized migrant people are the fabric of this city. The host is very respectful, and interact with them. It is different from the traditional media portraying Shanghai - magnificent skyline, which looks nice but cold.

Love Asia. Really miss it. Will plan to go there back-packing w my kids. THere is nothing like the ambiance of a asian city. Dirty, warm, humid, the smell from the local cuisine and the friendly people. Perfect.

There is a mistake. We call Dishes in Yangzte River Delta “本帮菜” （Bén Bāng cài) instead of “淮扬菜” （Huái Yáng Cái). 淮扬菜 is the dish between Huai River and Yangzte River. The center of Huaiyang dish is Yangzhou.

You'll notice at food stands on the street, the owners will always have their bottles of oil out and visible -- so you know they haven't been oil skimming. While oil skimming is a thing, it really isn't all that common and you can usually tell where it is safe to eat by the amount of other people eating there.

Thing about Eddie is that he might act Gangster, you know, have the whole swagger going, using an almost rap cadence in his language presentation but you can still hear Eddie the scholar through it all. The man's got the smarts behind his seemingly care-free-what-you-got-homie attitude. He's giving you a lot of observations and insight behind all this flash.
