Today I take a look at the Mungyo Gallery 48 set of Oil Pastels. I swatch out the full set, do a comparison with some other oil pastels, and show the full (sped up) process of doing a painting with them, using an oil painting by Guzenko Pavel Petrovic as reference.
To be clear, I am still pretty new to oil pastels, and have had no formal teaching with them - these are just my initial thoughts and impressions as I play!

This is exactly what I wanted to see. I just purchased the 72 set of mungyo oil pastels. They are arriving today!! I can’t wait to give them a try. I also ordered the Pentel set to have a harder set to do the initial lay down. Your review gives me confidence that I ordered the best set for my needs. I love your channel….just found you. You do an excellent job with your videos! Thank you!

I really enjoyed your comparisons. I noticed that when you were painting the eye that you were able to get quite a few layers of colour. I think that is amazing. thank you for sharing.

Thanks! I was getting used to how the colours blend out, and didn't start with dark enough colours, so I ended up adding loads of layers, and didn't seem to have much problem with it!

Wow! This was so useful, thank you! I had my mind set on Sennelier despite the cost but now I see Paul Reubens is much more in line with what I want. Definitely interested in all of the brands for different reasons but for now, I need my texture 😊 great video as always

There is that slight lack of colour clarity when the Haiya are blended, compared with the Sennelier, but I think for a lot of people, that just won't be much of an issue. For me the benefits of the consistent texture outweighs that, until my art gets to a WAY better level!! EDIT: Sorry, I thought you were commenting on my latest oil pastel video I just did on the Paul Rubens Haiya oil pastels. You might like them!!

@@helencryer Understood! Similarly, when I’ve had an exhausting day, I rely on watching tutorials and copying what someone else is doing, rather than taxing my brain further and having to come up with something myself. Although a tutorial is MUCH more help than a reference photo, sometimes it is just nice to have something to look at.

Tnx for the info. Also only a couple of months into oil pastels. Just bought some Senneliers (portrait set) but I do prefer the Mungyo’s. All the colours are much more consistent. For blending and for details you might consider a colour shaper. I use it for my portraits to blend (in combination with Q-tips) and to add details. They work really well with Mungyo.

Thanks! I think I have something like them, but a cheaper version, and the rubber kind of pulls out the end. Maybe I should try the proper version!

I have the 72 wooden boxed set of Mungyo Gallery oil pastels, and I get on with them very much. I’d like to know where to find the rest of their range, even though 72 is plenty! 😂I believe you hit the nail on the head regarding the pros and cons of Sennelier; I am glad to purchase singles open stock and use them for texture in finishing layer(s). As a new subscriber, I don’t know if you enjoy soft/hand rolled pastels, but I can vouch for Mungyo’s hand rolled pastels. They have a remarkable pigment load, and they work well alone, in mixed media, and in concert with Sennelier soft pastels.

Glad to hear you like them too! I've seen the 120 boxes on Amazon and eBay. I've only done one soft pastel painting so far - I have some Rembrandt's soft pastels, plus a few hand rolled ones of Jackson's own. If I end up doing more with them, I'll definitely take a look at the Mungyo's, thanks! I think it's a medium I could get into! Thank you so much for subscribing - that's lovely of you!

Thank you for the comparison I actually have Paul Rubin’s and mungo and love the softer Paul Rubin’s best however I completely agree that they are very inconsistent compared to the Mungyo. I was thinking about getting the sennelier but now I’m not so sure if they too are inconsistent like the Paul Rubin’s and seeing how easy that snapped put me off I mean I know you can still colour with a broken crayon and all that but the perfectionist in me really won’t get on well with that, every time I open the box and see a broken piece I’ll want to buy a replacement just so it can look nice, you know in the box where no one will see it 😂
@helencryer
@helencryer Жыл бұрын
The Sennelier are beautiful for blending, if you like softness - I just haven't used them very much yet, or got to know my way around the different colours' qualities. The Mungyo seemed less effortful because I'm not having to adapt to something different each time. It seems like a lot of the softest/gloopiest Sennelier ones are the transparent ones, so you could look on a chart and choose a couple that aren't those, and see what you think.

Thank for the video, very informative! Oil pastels are still intimidating to me. Have you tried the PanPastel blending tools? They might be helpful since they come in different shapes and the tips are interchangeable. Also, makeup eye shadow applicators as conveniently small enough for detailing.
@helencryer
@helencryer Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! I have Sofft tools, but don't think they would be ideal, partly because the force it takes to blend the pastels would move the sponge covers, and partly because they'd be hard to clean, and you'd need loads for all the colours. Some cheap make-up applicators might work though! I might try and have a play, thanks!

Your painting is amazing! I havent tried their regular oil pastels, but I love their water soluble oil pastels. They blend beautifully even without water. The only complaint I have is there are only 24 colors. (48 if you count the pearlescent set of the same colors) ❤

So talented, I think these pastels offer a good middle ground and you may reach for these more often. Did you get a bad set of Sennelier do you think?
@helencryer
@helencryer Жыл бұрын
No, not all - some of the Senneliers are supposed to be transparent - they use pigments in the same way good quality paints do - so there will be variation from colour to colour. I just don't necessarily enjoy that. I just need to get used to it and adapt, but like I said, the majority of them feel great anyway. I think someone needs to figure out what they want to achieve with oil pastels, and buy accordingly. For example, I want to do a really smooth looking portrait at some point, and will definitely use the Senneliers. If I want to do a really fun, textured landscape, I might do a smooth Mungyo background, with Paul Rubens details, etc.

For me the Gallery are one the best oil pastels out there. Is a shame they are not sold open stock. Once you are out of the white, for example, you will need to buy a new set for just one color. I wouldnt mind paying a bit more for these excellent pastels if they start selling them open stock.

Wouldn't mind trying oil pastels, but are they safe to blend with your fingers?
@helencryer
@helencryer Жыл бұрын
I think the cheaper ones are probably safe, because they're less likely to contain proper pigments, some of which may cause problems, but i should think it's sensible to use some kind of protection for genuine pigment ones. That's why I was trying out the gloves/blending tools/tissues at the beginning. Next I'll probably try barrier cream on my hands, once I've read up on it a bit, and maybe small make-up applicator blending tools. Any suggestions welcome!
