The Muppet Show was never intended to be a kid's show; that's what Sesame Street was for. In fact, one of the original pitch-productions (it was too early in the game to properly call it a pilot) was called Muppets: Sex & Violence. It was always Henson's goal to re-awaken puppeteering as a storytelling medium for all ages, and the Muppet Show was a major step in that direction.

The Muppets staying in character, that was the essence of Jim Henson. They weren’t props, they were characters. I remember reading about the Muppets time on the very first season of SNL right before _The Muppet Show_ premiered. The SNL cast (except for Gilda Radner) and writers all hated them. Writing the Muppet sketches was always the job of the newest writer because it was considered punishment. A writer recalled bringing his script over to Henson‘s hotel room, and Henson saying, _”No, he wouldn’t say this”._ The writer just complained how the Muppet was lying flat on an ironing board in front of him, so he thought the whole thing was stupid. Early writer Michael O’Donahue’s famous quote, “I don’t write for felt”. Jerks..
