Ummm I will echo what has apparently been said here in spades: 10/10. Concise, informative, and most importantly, not a million hours long. @richarddueck1770 Wow 3 prerelease events! I only did the one on Friday night. I am planning on making an extremely rare appearance at 2hg today because one of my best friends was in need of a partner. The one event I did go to I went 4-0. (There were 3 undefeated players, they stop on round 4, through tiebreakers I got 3rd. There is an ongoing joke that I have never won on tiebreakers in my life. It's a joke but true. The reason it is true according to my friends is I need to stop winning in a way that demoralizes my ops so much so that they drop. I told my friends you mean I need to stop being a woman and stop beating people with 3-5 color decks that in their eyes are "wrong"... My friends all agree those two things combine to make people extra salty after I crush them in games. My friends also tell me the fact that I'm a super nice person and talk to them after doesn't help those salty people either. 🙄😥 but I refuse to just get up from the table and not be nice and friendly... Anyways, the trials of being me... still undefeated 3rd place out of 53 with an in game record of (8-1) isn't bad. Here's the deck. My pool was lacking bombs, but I found some good synergy lines to lean into. I joked all night the best card I opened was a 2/2 so I hope I don't run into any Shocks. 😂 1- (U) Case of the Filched Falcon 1- (R) Shock 1- (1U) Bubble Smuggler 1- (1W) Case of the Pilfered Proof 1- (1U) Exit Specialist 1- (1R) Fugitive Codebreaker 1- (1R) Galvanize 1- (1R) Reckless Detective 2- (1W) Seasoned Consultant 1- (1WU) Alquist Proft, Master Sleuth 1- (2U) Cryptic Coat 1- (2W) Delney, Streetwise Lookout 1- (2r/w | 4w/u w/u) Fuss | Bother 1- (2R) Gearbane Orangutan 1- (2W) Make Your Move 1- (2U) Projektor Inspector 1- (2WU) Granite Witness 1- (3R) Harried Dronesmith 1- (3W) Karlov Watchdog 1- (2WW) On the Job 1- (3R) Person of Interest 1- (3GW-disguise 3WW) Crowd-Control Warden 1- (4R) Suspicious Detonation 1-Thundering Falls (UR) 1- Escape Tunnel 6- Plains 4- Islands 4- Mountains Even split mana base favoring white for double white spells. Some nice combos were Delney with Bubble Smuggler disguise, Exit Specialist disguise, Reckless Detective, and Harried Dronesmith. Cryptic Cloak won most games. 3/2 can't be blocked early game, then late game start paying 10 mana make 2 2/2s was nice. Fugitive Codebreaker also won a bunch of games. Play it as last card from hand, disguise draw 3 was just too much card advantage. Reckless Detective was a true overperformer. 3 Toughness was a magic number early game and its ability to filter my hand was crucial for success.

@richarddueck1770 That's great! Thanks for sharing. As you know, 3 color draft strategies are severely underrepresented and discussed. They became taboo and it's hard to find people that are willing to talk about it as a legitimate strategy. Even more difficult to have people willing to teach how to go about pursuing it. I'm so thrilled you're finding success and winning more. Being comfortable and not afraid to end up with a 3 color base deck is an essential skill to have imo. 🍻 Video this week is a crazy one. I was so sick during it and running a high fever. The draft was great. The deck was great. The game play was horrible. My mind was not functioning due to the fever. 😂 Enjoy the punts!

@nicolasfernandez5572 Agreed! I do not like that they did that. If you want the event promos inside the box fine, but make them commander cards or something... Not intentionally hard to find legal standard cards. Further, if you are going to make them legal for standard, allow people to use them at prerelease. It's frustrating.

@takescake Does your prerelease draft? All the ones I know of are sealed events... If you're doing sealed tonight I hope you open a sealed pool that allows you to go blue red like you want. Unfortunately, I think for this set most of the time you'll be soft forced to play a color pairing rather than being able to pick one you like. The odds are high that you just won't have enough playables on curve in every color so that will be a very limiting factor. But who knows you could open the perfects for what you want! I've done many draftsim sealed pools by now and I have to say there were very few times the pool of cards had a reasonable choice of different deck builds within them. Most of the time there was only one clear build to get a curve out, creature to removal spell ratio, and a win con or two like you'd want to see.

One thing that this review didn't mention in the gold card discussion: All of the gold cards with disguise can be disguised for generic mana, and then turned face up for your choice of hybrid mana, meaning that you only need one of the card's colors to make the card playable as long as it's disguised first. IOW, you only need to be playing 1 of a gold disguise card's colors to put it in your deck.
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@highseasbanditry I did cover that. Here is the timestamp: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l75kmK2Xr8_Fo5s.htmlsi=pRhLFe9EegcyBKfj&t=687 But I understand it's a lot of info and could be easily missed when watching the video. Keep in mind that even if you count those 10 commons as single colored cards, and the split cards as single colored cards you will still have just over 20% of the set have cards that MUST be played in specific color pairs. 26% percent if you count the run at common and the split cards as multicolored. I've done a lot of sealed practice on Draftsim today and there are many times I am scraping for good playables in just 2 colors, and I have been feeling much more constrained in my deck build options with each pool than normal. So, I stand by that assessment of how the play boosters plus the multicolored card ratios greatly impact the build options you'll have in sealed. Despite the run at common that can be flex single colored cards as well. Thanks for the comment. I hope this helps. 🍻

@mtgmonster8755 As noted elsewhere, I really appreciate how you give some good insight into the meta of the set, more than just reciting the archetypes we can find anywhere online. One question, you had a good insight about likely needing to splash a third color or more with this set. Any tips on how to set the mana base for that? If one splashes just a single card, maybe 7-7-3 for the lands? Balance differently if more cards in third color?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@OmegaSD18 Great question! Setting mana bases for 3-5 color decks is a complex process. Many things factor into what the "correct" base should be. I pride myself in being an excellent 3+ color drafter and sealed player. There are ongoing jokes in my lgs that when we are 3 picks in I will already have all 5 colors in my card pool! It's just a joke all in good fun, but sometimes it's true! I'll admit I have a higher comfort level playing 5 color decks than most people I know, but I've also had many years of experience with it because I practice it all the time and I enjoy that style of game play. There are a few general things I can say about mana bases. First, and most importantly, my mana base and my 23 cards are 100% co-dependent on each other. One directly impacts the other and vice versa. It all depends on what cards I have to work with and what kind of fixing I have access to. I always ask myself how strong are the cards I want to play? What is my curve out looking like, with emphasis and extra attention to what my turn 1-3 plays are. Are my turn 1-3 plays in 2 colors or more? If more than 2 colors, can I make it only 2? If not, what are my outliers and why are those important? Are they strong enough to justify risking about 5% more loses due to my mana base? (If those cards in the off color will win me more than 5% of the games I land them in I do consider them a net positive. That's my own assessment that would take too long to explain.) I also ask myself are the early off-color splash cards strong? Are they still strong if they are 2 mana plays landing on turn 4 or 5? Are they good later if I don't land them on turn? Do I need them on turn 2? If so, maybe I need to consider them being a main color... I then look at how many colors am I trying to splash for, and what turn do you need to play them by? Unfortunately, there is no one correct answer. It also depends on what type of fixing you have access to. Will you be falling behind on board in the first 3 plays or not? Like I said it's a very complex decision making process, and there are too many variables to give a broad one answer solves them all answer here. There are many situations where I'll splash a color and have zero lands in that color if my fixing is good. I'd encourage you to aim for 7-9 mana sources of your base color in a 2 color build splashing for a 3rd-5th color. Even in a 5 color build you'll generally still want 7-9 sources for your main 2 colors if that's your base, and aim for 2-5 sources for splashes depending on how important they are or how many cards you have in that color. Where it gets more complicated is when the base needs to be 3 colors straight out instead of 2. This is a more unusual mana base tactic, but I feel like I've really mastered the 3 color base decks. If you watch any number of my drafts I go over my mana base choices for 3 main color decks frequently. In general, you should still aim for 7 mana sources of each main color, even in a 3 color base deck. I'd be lying if I said I never pushed that boundary down in a pinch. I have. I'll run 6 sources for a 3 different color even split base, and in very rare cases I'll have only 5 sources of mana for a main color in a 3 color base. I do not recommend that! Honestly, I wouldn't recommend someone trying for the even split 3 color base for this set for the first time if you're unsure how to set the rest of your deck play ratios to match that kind of base. The even split bases take a lot of skill in building the entire deck around those ratios perfectly, and take a high level of skill to balance just right. Most people, most of the time, will build decks where ~7,7, 3 is correct. If you aren't used to splashing and/or you're not that confident in it, that's where I'd recommend you start. 2 mana color base splashing for 1-3 strong cards in one other color for a 3 color deck. Your splash cards should be single pip in the off color splash focusing on those being late game strong plays. I hope this helps. 🍻

@mtgmonster8755 wow, thanks didn't expect that in-depth of a response, plus I saw another of your comments about fixing - super helpful! Another question, if you'll kindly oblige, more related to game play. How do you decide when and how to play your removal? Given your comments on your expectations of tempo with this set, does early removal make sense to disrupt tempo, or better to hold removal expecting a bomb at some point?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@OmegaSD18 Just because I think it is going to be a slower format than ONE or LCI doesn't mean there won't be some great aggro decks that you'll face. Detective aggro white with X, especially WU or RW colors are really aggressive builds that can win fast! So don't assume that every deck you see will be slow. When I use my removal spells depends mostly on what is going on in the game as a whole and how "fast" is my op trying to go. How fast am I trying to go? What does the board state look like? What do I have in my hand? How many cards does my op have left in their hand? Usually by turn 3 or so you should have a pretty good idea of whether your op is super aggro or not. If you are losing to a perfect curve out from your op on the play, then yes you might need to slow them down with interaction sooner than later. But if you can make safe/ good trades and stabilize that way sometimes that is best. It just depends. Sometimes you don't want to trade off your creatures. Like I said removal is so situational. It just depends on so many things including your deck's strategy. In general, I try and make trades early game when they make sense (if they don't make sense I don't trade) and I try to hold removal for things I might not be able to trade with later, but again this depends on my pace too. If I'm on the play with a 1, 2, 3 drop creature I might start firing off my removal on medium creatures just to allow my board to continue having good attacks if I am the one really putting the pressure on. Just depends. Also, do I have a second removal spell in hand? How much removal do I have in my deck? If I have a lot of removal I might be more willing to use it early knowing I have a high chance to draw into more... Removal is so hard to give advice on because it is very situational. In general, use it if you really need to early. Try and save it for later if you can.

Awesome video! I'm used to playing 2 color pairings in sealed, so I think this set will be hard for me. Any advice on how many fixers should I run?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@Cynthiadoux It depends on what fixing you open. This set doesn't have that much fixing so that's a massive limiting factor on whether you can splash or play 3 colors or not. I think you'll still be able to force 2 color builds, but with that decision you'll most likely feel like you didn't have a lot of options in what to put in your build to play. You'll just have an overall sense of fewer cards to work with. My largest advice is find your best curve out while still playing the best cards you open. Whether that's in 2 colors or more... If you run a splash I recommend having at least 3 ways to get that color mana in your deck without going below 7 mana sources for your main base 2 colors. Lots of people like running a 7, 7, 3 base for a 2 color base with one splash color. This is a good base if you have no fixing. When I run 3 colors I like to have at minimum 1-4 sources of fixing. Just so I know we are all on the same page, splashes are 1-3 cards in a different color that have only a single pip off color and are expected to be strong late game plays. If you run more than that, that color is no longer considered a splash and the amount of fixing and your mana base becomes a lot more complex really quickly. If you're not confident in 3 colors stick to only 1-3 cards in a single different color for splashing and default to a 7,7, 3 mana base. I like to do some dry runs on Draftsim in sealed before going to prerelease. If you're worried about what this build process will be like for the set I recommend you heading to that website and trying a few sealed pools out for some practice so you'll be more prepared for what to expect. Hope this helps. You've got this! 🍻

hello, awesome content, do you think Assemble the Players is a good card or a trap? cause to me it seems good if the majority of my creatures are within its scope. I'm new in the game and entered a tournament in my local game store with a sealed deck in this format
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@jordiherrera4090 Hello! Assemble the Players is one of those borderline cards. I don't think it is unplayable, but it isn't that amazing or worth building an entire deck around. I think it is fine to play if you have at minimum 9 hits for it in your deck. This will give you a good chance to at least play one card off of it, so at that point it in essence it turns into a 2 mana draw a card which is fine but not amazing. My biggest problem with the card is it can slow down your curve out and creature pressure early game in a white aggro deck (the deck it goes into). So there is this tension between that card and the ideal deck for it. You want to play it out early to try and maximize its value but you also don't want to play it early because you'd rather play a creature on turn 2. Notably you'll find that same tension with No Witnesses in white as a card that goes against what most white decks want to do for a win con. Hope this helps.

For the cards that have "sacrifice an artifact," can you sacrifice the clue for 2 mana and get the card draw and also get the trigger for sacrificing?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@alexanderthegreatest7742 The way you phrased this comment I am not sure which situation you're exactly talking about so I'll give the rulings on the two different situations possible. Scenario #1: You sacrifice the clue fish to draw a card. Then you cast Suspicious Detonation. Suspicious Detonation: 4R This spell costs {3} less to cast if you’ve sacrificed an artifact this turn. This spell can’t be countered. (This includes by the ward ability.) Suspicious Detonation deals 4 damage to target creature. In this situation if you sacrificed your clue fish to draw a card this turn then Suspicious Detonation would get access to its first line of text where this spell cost 3 less to cast, and obviously you've already drawn your card off the clue fish. So you get both. Scenario #2: There is an etb or activated ability that tells you to sacrifice an artifact as a cost to trigger its ability. Here you cast Cornered Crook choosing to sacrifice the artifact fish clue in order to do 3 damage to any target. Cornered Crook: 4R When Cornered Crook enters the battlefield, you may sacrifice an artifact. When you do, Cornered Crook deals 3 damage to any target. In this situation you chose your clue fish as the artifact you are going to sacrifice when Cornered Crook etbs so you can deal 3 damage to any target. You can NOT also activate the fish clue to draw a card as well. I hope this clears things up. 🍻 If you have a specific scenario that you're unsure of feel free to ask.

@mtgmonster8755 thanks, yes I was talking about the second scenario. I was wondering if the etbs or activated abilities that require you to sacrifice an artifact would also let you draw a card as you sacrificed the clue if you pay 2 mana, guess not thank you

is it noted somewhere that you can't play these last three cards on the prerelease kits? I can already see the discussion that will break out if someone does not know that.
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@buzzardclaw7473 My guess is there is no symbol or indication inside the pack or on the card that those three cards aren't part of the sealed pool. If your event manager is good they should make the announcement before everyone opens up their kits, but that doesn't mean everyone will listen or hear that announcement. WOTC putting promos in the kits can cause a bit of a mess. They have done this previously with commander cards, but at least those had a special marking on them for commander. My best advice is if you have an op at the event that plays out one of the three non-legal cards from their hand call for a judge and see how everyone wants to best resolve the situation. It's a casual event so I don't expect this would cause a big fuss even when there are mistakes made, but a judge can be nice to have over to help resolve the problem as a neutral 3rd party. This takes the pressure off of you from having to deliver bad news, and makes sure game play progresses forward in a fair way from there for everyone.

Just a clarification about cases - does the mechanic mean that a card like the tidebinder can actually stop the actual solving of the case? Also I assume that the solve happens every end step right, so even if it gets countered next turn it can still get to the solved state, correct?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@ananthakrishnankrishnan7287 Cases only attempt to solve at the end of the turn if the conditions for the "SOLVE" are met. Let's say you need to have 3 detectives under your control for the case to "solve". At your end step that case will attempt to solve and go on the stack if and only if you have 3 detective creatures under your control at that time. While that trigger of solve is on the stack, your opponent could use murder to kill one of your detectives. While the ability is on the stack if one of your 3 detectives were destroyed at instant speed and you now only have 2 detectives under your control, then the ability will fizzle as it resolves on the stack because the conditions are no longer met for that trigger. Now, you will have a chance in any of your following turns to play more detectives and have the ability go to the stack on a later turn's end step any time the conditions are met and you have 3 detectives. The case will trigger the solve ability when the conditions are met and the case hasn't solved successfully yet. Tidebinder is a more interesting question. So Tidebinder can counter the ability of cases on the stack for that one turn. But, because a case is an enchantment the Tidebinder does not prevent the case from being able to trigger the next turn if the conditions for solved are met again. Tidebinder's second ability preventing abilities from a source as long as it remains on the battlefield only works on Creatures, Planeswalkers, and Artifacts as specified on the Tidebinder's card. Great questions.

Is blue white the only archetype in detectives because I hate the color white but really want to build a detective deck
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@saboteurproductions White detectives are very good in this set. They have some of the best 1 and 2 drops in the format. I'd try to put your bias against white aside and give white detectives a try for this set. You can play red white detectives if you don't want to go blue. Technically, there is a black white and green white detective build but both of those are less supported. I do really struggle to see you not playing white with detectives. They have almost all the good 1 and 2 drops plus pumps... If you want to go faster I recommend the red pairing. If you want to go value flying slower I'd recommend blue pairing. I think blue has a huge role in detective builds starting at the 3 plus drops. So missing out on that end game by not playing blue is okay as long as you're aggro enough. For me, I prefer 3 color builds, so I'm looking closer at the Jeskai Detectives with focus on red value draw cards and burn, plus blue pumps and flyers, white early game. Esper control detectives, less aggro lots of value plays lots of removal. or Naya detective builds. Very similar to Jeskai but instead of blue's end game flyers etc, you'll have big green and or red non-detective creatures to close out a game. Think of Naya as detectives up front, big creatures in the back.

@saboteurproductions It's always best to go into prerelease open minded and ready to play the colors that make most sense for your pool, whether that ends up being 2 colors or 5. It all depends on your opens, curve out, win cons, synergies and fixing. That's the fun of it! You never know what's right until you see what you have to work with. 🍻 Good luck and have fun!

@saboteurproductions I wanted to follow up on our conversation about detective and let you know that I just finished my lgs Prerelease. I went 4-0, undefeated playing Jeskai Detectives with Artifacts and Value plays. Rare/ mythic opens that made the deck were Delney, Streetwise Lookout, Cryptic Coat, Fugitive Codebreaker, and Alquist Proft, Master Sleuth. Key cards that comboed with my rares or just outperformed were Reckless Detective, Harried Dronesmith, Gearbane Orangutan, Exit Specialist, Seasoned Consultant, Case of the Pilfered Proof, and Case of the Filched Falcon. It was very good. I would play Jeskai detectives again.

how is eliminate the impossible a board wipe?
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@gamersadvice3633 It's not a traditional "board wipe" necessarily, but I've been thinking of it like a cogwork wrestler on a massive scale. Just imagine on turn 4, if you have 2 2/2s on your board and your opponent has 2 2/2s on their side and they swing in. The fact that it only cost you two mana to potentially eat both of their creatures (you lose none of yours), plus you get to make a clue, your op's creatures lose menace if they were suspected (so even easier to eat their cretaures!), and oh yah it plays around the ward 2 on all the morphs! Stellar card. It just has huge potential as a big momentum swing for this slower set. Plus, with many of the creatures in the set only having 2 or 3 power anyways it's still a very relevant card even late game once the board is stalled. It just has a lot of potential as a 2 mana spell and a whole lot of upside attached to it.

hi, i'm back (from voluntarily skipping LCI) i'm extremely scared about the opening hand gameplay-retention mechanic on arena, but there aren't that many morph creatures this set i'll keep an eye out (both in draft and in matches) for this investigate synergy you're talking about i don't know which program you use for making these videos or how much effort you want to put into video-editing, but the back to back section where you say "etra can't make you play lands" and then "these cases have three boxes" made me feel you could add an effect to highlight (not the red circle with arrow of course ^-^") i'm excited to see how much multicolored the drafts will be!
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@DeWillpower Welcome back. Hope you're doing well! You're right. This is a mana hungry set and I think the Arena shuffler could have some impact on land draws in Bo1, but I don't think it will be as impactful as it was for KTK Bo1 on Arena. This set has a lot more options for good turn 1-4 plays and I don't see people running too many disguise cards in their decks unless they have great a reason to. So I'm not overly concerned about the Arena Bo1 game play experience. As for video editing, these guides take more time and effort than you could imagine! I start working as soon as the first spoilers drop. I learn the mechanics and rulings inside and out. I have a group of amazing judges and friends I rely on heavily for help understanding rulings and new interactions for the set. (Big shout out to all of them. You all know who you are! Thank you guys!) The entire week I start working on combo analysis and putting my thoughts together, but they always hold the commons for the final day drop so the full picture of the set is never quite complete until the very last minute on that final image drop on Thursday when the entire set is spoiled. This is when the hard work really begins. From that time until the video releases I spend every waking hour working on getting this video together and out to you all. Usually that only gives me about 2-4 hours to finalize my thoughts/ analysis on the set with the extra considerations factored in now with the commons revealed. From there the rest of the time is spent on editing video and images. Normally this takes about 20 more hours. I'm a one person crew here. I use a program that is super easy to edit graphics in, DaVinci Resolve. I could easily import a circle or arrow and overlay it, but I didn't think that was necessary this time around. I'm sorry it was confusing and you felt like that would have helped. I'll work hard to make it better next time. Just know, I am always under a huge time crunch on this and I always do my very best given the time constraints I have. Thank you for your continued support. I appreciate it greatly. 🍻
@DeWillpower
@DeWillpower 6 ай бұрын
@@mtgmonster8755 that's even more work than i expected! (thank you to the judges and your friends from me too :D) davinci resolve allows you to do almost everything so i'm sure it won't block you from your imagination, but... it wasn't "confusing" at all, it's just me that thinks about those small things of UX, but there's also cost of production (sleep schedule) and time (youtube algorithm) that i failed to consider. i tried to give the advice mosty because of the intro, but now i don't want to make you think you should put an highlight effect in every single card you're talking about (the extreme case) i want to rephrase it as: since case is a new type of card, marking the three "boxes" (as you read from the script) with three simple squares would have been enough even for one time (but time travel isn't discovered yet so this advice is worthless) i hope you're taking care of yourself now that the crunch ended 💛

More uncommons than commons? WTH?! That’s uncommon.
@mtgmonster8755
@mtgmonster8755 6 ай бұрын
@ruimartins841 Yah. This set is quite the departure from normal. I've been doing some draftsim sealed pools and it's very different than a normal sealed pool feel. The vast majority of time I have only 1 color pair that is even close to playable. The extra rares are of no help here. Most of the rares just have zero support from commons in their color, and the uncommons are so diverse that it is unusual to open a pool of uncommons that actually combo together. If you expect all of that to line up perfectly and happen in the colors of the rare or mythic you actually want to play, forget about it 😂. I've had at least 10% of the pools have no viable curve out in any color pair (even with splashing). Just not enough creatures in the 1 and 2 drop spots. Those pools also had no synergies that go together. Almost no removal sometimes. Just not even close to a playable or acceptable pool. It's worrisome. There are going to be a lot of bad filler cards being played at prerelease this time around. If you can avoid lots of filler while still pulling together a deck that actually curves out and has even a few synergies, I think you'll be very successful. That or you'll need to land a single bomb mythic that wins the game on its own. lol 🍻 should be interesting!
