update: I've been here 3 times since watching your video Tom. it never gets old and it's a great hike up and down those stairs! the only downside is that it's not so much of a secret anymore. I went there yesterday which was a Tuesday, at 1 p.m., and there were three other groups of people there. All youngsters/ whippersnappers, high school age.

The thing I find amusing is Tom says " to call this place a liability is an understatement " then he urges you to visit it before it falls down pretty much . hmm, it's so dilapidated it could fall in on you so go there .....

Totally bizarre. I lived the first 35+ years of my life in L.A., always sought out interesting out of the way places (Trapper's, etc.), and NEVER heard of this before now. Well done, Tom.

I read about this place in the book "Weird LA", apparently the main house burned down years ago, all that's left now are a few out-buildings.

One of the hikes in the "Secret Stairs of Los Angeles" book by Charles Flemming. Been there, there are 2 set of stairs each about 400+. In the wonderful Pacific Palisades area, Dennis Tito, first paying Astronaut on the Russian Soyuz lives nearby.

Tom: There is another potential Nazi redoubt nearby. West and North of Will Rogers State Park. Start at Camp Josepho and go south along the stream.

That place is in the middle of Topanga Canyon park but still owned by LA. Topanga Canyon won't take full ownership till LA tears down all the buildings. Of course this is very costly considering the terrain to get to the locations. So it will be there for awhile.

There are a couple of broken down driveways that lead off of PCH between Santa Monica and Malibu. Someone told me about the Murphy Ranch and that it was "in the Santa Monica mountains" and I thought maybe one of them lead to it, but looking at the map I guess not. I'm still curious what those derelict driveways might lead to though....

There is an even bigger and darker backstory to this. Hitler really did expect to conquer America and had assigned a cadre of people who would act as commanders over the various sections of the USA; these people were trained in the political, geographic, demographic details of the regions they were to supervise once Hitler conquered America. Apparently, one of the American soldiers at the end of World War II fortuitously met one of these future "commanders" who knew all about the Meriden, Bristol, Waterbury area of Connecticut, anticipating being commander of that region; as he spoke to the German fellow, he discussed Hitler's plan for he conquest of the USA>

Dave Bass Fascinating. Reading Dave's book the Rustic Canyon chapter was interesting. Glad I found this video. Those concrete stairs went up almost vertical. Trip on a shoe lace and you're a goner.

Cathaaayyyy Once you walk past the Power House you come across the rusted ruins, from there you keep on with the path and the path slowly turns into a small trail basically meant for one person at a time for about 1/4-1/2 of a mile, you keep following this trail until you reach a clearing and the barn will be on your right side.

Did you guys need a permit to shoot this? I'm trying to shoot something for school & Film LA told me I need a permit from Film LA but also from whatever park is in charge of it. I can't seem to track down a rec center/rangers office that will claim they have anything to do with it. Might just have to do it on the dL but I'd really prefer to have my bases covered. Thanks!

Nice video, but Murphy Ranch area is "barely" in LA. It's in pacific palisades on the santa monica mountain foothills. It's bufferred by very expensive homes. Anyhow, keep up the good work.

When their today my first time but didn't make it to the main gate 😢 which I really wanted to go to saw the powerhouse but unfortunately its shut from everywhere now buy a great experience recommended to anybody oh & the stairs suck

Please be nice when you visit. Murphy Ranch is a city park inside the Topanga State Park and is open during daylight hours only. It is not ok to spray paint anything there or on your way there.

I wish I lived in California. But then again... I get to explore abandoned steel factories and the infamous Centralia. (I'm from PA) Did you know that during WWII, the Nazis successfully landed in the U.S.? It was a small group, and they gave themselves up before they could do anything. Haha

Who owns the property? It looks like many millions of dollars in real estate sitting unused. It's cool that it hasn't been turned into a generic housing development, but hard to figure that someone could own it, pay really large property taxes, and not make any use of it.
