There's a video of a blacksmith making damascus steel, holding all the pieces stacked in the desired order by using "radiator hose" clamps. The thin metal of the clamps eventually burns away in the forge.

Beautiful! Do you have to use a special kind of wire to withstand the heat?

Nope, I’m pretty sure we just use a normal wire to wrap it. We have to take it off fairly quickly to make sure it doesn’t stick to the glass!
