There are four muscles of mastication - the masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid.
Embryologically, the muscles of mastication develop from the first pharyngeal arch. Consequently, they are innervated by a branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V), the mandibular nerve.

I am discovering a bit of anatomy book inconsistency. In your opinion is the lateral pterigoids responsible for opening the jaw, or only protruding? In Moore it claims it depresses the jaw, but reading Lachmans and Netters the diagasterics and Mylohyoids are responsible for opening!
